임경업 연보의 가사화, <총병가> 고찰 (A Study on , A Song Mourning Yim Gyoung-ub)

초록

<총병가摠兵歌>는 임경업林慶業(1594-1646)의 일대기를 율문화하고 그의 비극적 삶의 한이 풀어지기를 기원한 필사본 중편가사이다. ‘총병’은 임경업이 40세 때(1633년) 명明의 공유덕ㆍ경중명의 반란을 진압할 때 세운 공으로 명 황제로부터 받은 직함에서 따온 것이다.
본고는 지금까지 거의 논의되지 않았던 가사 <총병가>에 대해 자세한 주해를 시도하고 이를 바탕으로 <총병가>의 작품론을 시도하였다. 또한 이 작품의 시가적 특징을분석하고, 임경업을 소재로 한 여러 장르들과 비교하였으며, 이를 통해 작가의식을 추구하여 문학사적 의미를 고찰하였다.
<총병가>는 율격을 의식하여 실전實傳의 산문성과 차별을 두고자 한 작품이다. 서사에서는 연보의 자료에 충실하나, 놀라운 구성력과 능숙한 기교를 보여 산문을 운문으로 만든 성공적인 작품으로 꼽을 만하다. 작자는 운문이 가지는 운율도 탄력적으로적절하게 구사하고, 사건 진행 묘사의 속도감도 활용하여 53년에 걸친 파란만장한 인생을 150행에 밀도 있게 그려냈다. 한시 전통에 밀착되어 있고 가사의 발전에도 익숙한 작자의 능력을 십분 발휘한 이 작품은 가사문학사적으로 볼 때 서사장르로 전환되는 가사의 진행 방향을 공유하면서도 사대부 가사의 미학을 기교적으로 더욱 세련시킨 작품으로 주목된다. 작자가 <총병가>에서 구사한 여러 시적 장치들은 조선 후기가사에 흔히 나타나는 현상인 가사가 이야기로 해체되는 현상을 막아주어, 가사의 완성도를 높인 것도 이 작품의 성과이다.
또 작자는 명ㆍ청 교체 과정의 복잡한 세계사를 배경이 아니라 임경업의 인생을 전환하는 동기로서 적절한 순간에 활용했으며, 임경업의 운명을 굴곡지게 하는 조선 중기의정치사도 제한적이나마 일관성 있게 제시하였다. <총병가>를 이해하기 위해서는 시어가 인용한 내용을 참조할 임충민공실기의 <연보> 등에 대한 지식이 선행해야 한다는점에서 이야기꾼에 의한 강독과는 거리가 멀고 지식인층의 율독에 알맞은 작품이다.
<총병가>에서 임경업은 명 황제로부터 받은 총병이라는 직함을 자랑스럽게 여기고, 자신을 오랑캐에 핍박당하는 중국 역대의 순절자들과 동일시했다. 그러나 명이 멸망하므로, 임경업의 일생은 비극적인 죽음으로 끝맺었다. 이렇게 입경업을 그린 작자의 모든 생각은 연보에 의존하고 있기 때문에 가사의 일인칭 화자가 드러내는 작자의생각은 <총병가> 작자의 생각이 아니라 실기의 생각일 수밖에 없다는 한계가 있다.
또한 본고는 <총병가>의 자료 취택을 분석하여, 임경업의 일생에서 작자는 무엇을보이려고 하는가와 함께 무엇을 보이지 않으려 하는가를 주목하였다. 전기 자료는 모두 섭렵하되, 조선 조정의 사정에 대해서는 언급을 삼가는 것이 작자의 일관된 태도이다. 이런 태도를 가진 작자가 가사를 통해 신원을 호소하는 적극성을 기대하기는 어렵다고 보아, 이 작품은 이미 임경업의 신원에 대한 사회적 합의가 이루어진 이후에 창작된 것으로 생각한다. 마지막의 호소는 현실의 신원과는 별개로 해석할 수 있다. 숭명崇明의 세계관에서 조선에서의 신원보다 더 중요한 것은 명의 총병으로서의 복귀이다. 임경업의 죽음으로 끝난 마지막은 청의 강고함이 더해지는 현실의 비극성을 임경업에 투사해 비극적 영웅으로 임경업을 남겨둔 것으로 생각한다. 황당한 허구에 공감할 수 없는 지식인의 정서적 공감을 유도하는 효과가 있었을 것이다.

영어초록

<Chongbyung-ga(총병가)> is a piece of gasa(가사, traditional Korean long poem) about Yim Gyoung-ub(임경업)'s life, wishing that his lasting regret would disappear. “Chongbyung” is taken from the title General Yim Gyoung-ub, which was received from the Emperor when he was summoned as a support forces by the Ming dynasty(明, “Ming”) in order to suppress rebellion at China at his age of 40(1633).
This paper attempts a discussion of the detailed footnotes of the manuscript <Chongbyung-ga> which has been barely been discussed at all so far, and also attempts critical research about <Chongbyung-ga> based on these footnotes. Also, the poetic features of this work are analyzed and the composition of it is compared with those of works of many diverse genres concerning Yim Gyoung-ub’s life. Through these results, this paper attempts a pursuit of the writer's consciousness and considers the literary historical value of the work.
The lifetime of Yim Gyoung-ub(“Yim”, 1594-1646) as revealed in <Chongbyung-ga> is as follows: Yim was a general of Joseon, and in the course of Northeastern Asian history in the 17th century, he tried to guard Joseon against the Qing dynasty(淸, “Qing)).
After Qing began demanding the right to Joseon through suzerainty after the Chinese invasion of Korea in 1636(병자호란), Yim was summoned by the Qing dynasty to help ruin Ming. Because he tried to save Ming instead of attacking it, he was indicted by Qing. In order not to betray Ming due to his loyalty, he escaped from Joseon to China in exile disguised as a monk. However, because of the Ming's falling and because of the Ming's generals' treachery, he was sent to a Qing prison. As he held was on suspicion of plotting against the government of Joseon, he was sent back home under a request from Joseon.
Unfortunately, he died two days after the Joseon king's own trial.
The contents of <Chongbyung-ga> are based on Yim Gyoung-ub's annuals in Yimchoongmingong Silgi(임충민공실기), which prosed the real history of Yimchoongmingong(임충민공, 임경업). But <Chongbyung-ga>'s writer created this work conscious of the prosody, which characterizes different from many other biographies about him. He/she made a long history showing his life of 53 years in a 150-line verse. Since the writer was faithful to the records of Yim's annuals, this work could be evaluated successfully not only as a poem but also as Yim's biography.
The writer craftfully made the prosody by using poetic devices skillfully, and wrote a vivid narrative where he/she was both good at compressing events and at accentuating certain points. As a result, he/she emphasized the prosperities and adversities of Yim’s life, and led readers to sympathize with the feelings of the poet. So this verse could be categorized all at once as an epic, lyrical, and didactic work.
The writer also properly used Joseon's political dilemma not simply to tell the story of the tumultuous period of transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty, but to convert that dilemma into the story of an important turning moment in Yim’s life. <Chongbyung-ga> was not suitable to be read aloud by a professional storyteller in front of a mass of people, but instead was suitable for reciting to the intellectual class.
This is because experts’ footnotes or knowledge about Yim's life, especially Yimchoongmingong Silgi, were indispensable for understanding this work. This work must be nearly similar to his annual in that book, which was published under King Jeongjo(정조)’s order and tried to contain all about Yim. The writer must have been well-acquainted both with Chinese poetry and with gasa. His/Her literary expertise could achieve two goals: one was to cultivate the skills of Sadaebu gasa(사대부 가사) enjoyed in scholar-gentry society and another was to follow the progressive direction of converting gasas into epics. Because the writer could use this two skills well, he/she prevented this work from becoming prose.
In <Chongbyung-ga>, the writer assessed Yim’s title of ‘Chongbyung’ invaluable and identified him with the dying martyrs of the Chinese royalty that was strained by barbarianism. However, Ming did fall.
Therefore, the lifetime of Yim ended with tragic death. This point is the idea not only of the writer but also of Yimchoongmingong Silgi which he/she had referred to.
In addition, this paper analyzes the adoption or rejection of <Chongbyung-ga>'s writer from Yim's life. As the result, I revealed to clarify the writer's attitude not attempting to emphasize domestic political conditions. My point of view leads to a conclusion that by writing this work, the writer must not have been attempting to exonerate Yim from false charges. This conclusion is connected to assumptions characteristic of the time when the writer wrote completed work. I conclude that this work might have been created after king(숙종)'s exoneration of Yim and the publishing of Yimchoongmingong Silgi.
The appeal to the King in the last lines of the work might be interpreted separately from literal meaning. The writer seemed to have wanted to shape General Yim into the tragic hero through the last lines.
It could have been an attempt to produce an effect on the imagination of the intellectuals who couldn't sympathize with the absurd fictions that were popular with the common people.
