초록

This study focuses on the influence of Korea(Chosun) Gymnasium on sports in Korea from 1946 to 1966. Korea Gymnasium, the first privately-invested gymnasium in Korea after the Korean Independence, played its role faithfully as a center to train elite athletes and leaders in sports as well as to nurture competitive games in Korea. Before the Taerung National Athletic Training Center for athletes was founded in 1966, the Gymnasium was practically the place to train national athletes as well. Korea Gymnasium made a remarkable contribution to sports in Korea and was a place of historic significance. The study findings are summarized into four areas.
First, the Chosun Gymnasium as the one and only indoor gymnasium that was privately-held before the Korea war, laid the foundation for the growth of elite sports in Korea. In the Chosun Gymnasium, Hwang, Eul-su played a leading role in most of the activities in the gymnasium.
Second, Korea Gymnasium was born as a result of the reconstruction of Chosun Gymnasium after the Korean War, enjoying its peak years and leading the Korean elite sports.
Third, athletes in Korea Gymnasium were trained and educated to become influential and respectable leaders who played a pivotal role in the growth of sports in Korea.
Fourth, Korea Gymnasium was a springboard for Korean sports to go global. After the Korean Liberation in 1945, athletes in Chosun Gymnasium were invited by Philippine. Later, wrestling players from Korea Gymnasium participated in the World Greco-roman Wrestling Championship held in Yokohama city in 1961. The participation was a signal that sports activities were started to get officially recognized at the government level. In addition, Korean athletes were able to get new experiences on the global stage, leading to their enhanced performance.
