中國古墳繪畵의 淵源硏究-戰國時代∼漢代楚文化를 중심으로- (The Beginning of Funerary Paintings in Chinese Tombs)

초록

고구려 고분벽화 연구에 있어서 벽화고분의 구조와 더불어 벽화 제재의 구성과 배치는 벽화고분을 편년하는데 중요한 근거가 된다. 고구려 고분미술의 벽화 제재의 구성 원칙이나 개별 도상의 조합 원칙에대한 연구는 일부 고분을 제외하고 보다 깊이 있게 전개되지 못한 상태이다. 각 고분에 남아있는 벽화의영성함, 해석의 바탕이 되어줄 고구려의 제사나 장의 관련 기록이 많지 않다는 점 등이 고구려 벽화의 제재 구성과 배치, 조합을 보다 다양하고 치밀하게 해석하는데 어려움을 주고 있다.
한편 중국의 한위진남북조 고분미술은 고구려 벽화의 편년이나 장의 미술 제재의 전파과정을 추적하는데 중요한 비교자료이다. 한대 고분미술의 연원을 거슬러 올라가면 초나라의 영토였던 호남성 장사지역 마왕퇴묘의 漆棺畵와 전국시대 楚墓출토 회화자료가 있다. 초나라의 조형적 상상력은 중국 초기회화의 대표적 유물들에서 잘 표현되며 후대 중국회화의 기반이 되는 특징을 형성하면서 중국 회화의 발전에 중요한 연원을 제공하였다.
증후을묘에서 보이는 초나라 고분의 구조적 특징, 외관과 내관의 칠화, 벽사의 기능을 가진 신괴상, 영혼의 승천을 돕는 매개체로서의 새, 용, 뱀의 반복적 묘사 등은 초나라인들의 신앙세계와 사후관을 잘 반영하고 있으며 이후 마왕퇴한묘 등 한대의 고분미술의 발달에 지대한 영향을 미치게 된다. 전국시대~한대 초문화에서 형성된 고분 미술의 도상과 제재의 구성은 이후 중국 고분미술의 발달에 기반이 되었으며 초문화의 회화예술에서 보이는 체계적인 도상의 구성과 층위적 내세의 표현은 고구려 벽화의 특징인 풍부한 천상세계의 표현의 연원을 찾아볼 수 있는 중요한 비교자료를 제공한다.

영어초록

In the study of Koguryo wall paintings, the composition and disposition of painting subject matters are important sources to understand the development and periodization of Koguryo tomb paintings. However, the organization of subject matters and composition of each iconography in Koguryo wall paintings have not been deeply investigated yet except for a few tombs.
On the other hand, funerary arts of China from the Han to the Northern and Southern Dynasties provide valuable sources to the evolution and transmission of Koguryo wall paintings. Han funerary art consisting of more than 70 painted tombs and thousands of tomb relief sculptures excavated to date is said to have established the fundament of East Asian funerary art. If one traces the origin of Han funerary art, interestingly, not the pictorial arts from the Central Plain region but those from the Chu kingdom in the southern China exerted great influence on the formation of early Han funerary art, which is represented by the silk paintings from the Mawangdui Tomb No. 1. The formative and pictorial imagination of Chu Kingdom art was well expressed in the paintings from the Chu tombs during the Warring States period(BC 403-221) and it made a tremendous contribution to the development of Chinese painting and calligraphy.
In the present paper, I examined major painting examples from the Chu Kingdom and the iconography and composition of the major subject matters. The multi-layered composition, the worship of hybrid creatures, and the used of animal medium(like bird, snake and dragon) to help the deceased ascend to heaven well reflect the belief and afterlife view of the Chu people. Those characteristics of the iconography and composition of subjects of the Chu tomb arts made great impact on the establishment of Han funerary art. In addition, the composition of the systematic iconography and the expression of the multi-layered afterlife view of the Chu art provide us with interesting comparative examples to study the representation of heavenly realm.
