초록

Employing a regional perspective that underlines the interactions of radicals and a new regional term, Eastern Asia, in place of East Asia, this paper suggests that Yan’an be understood as a node of the transnational radical networks that existed in twentieth century Eastern Asia. In Yan’an radicals from Asia and the world were concentrated not only to support China’s anti-Japanese war and/or the Chines Revolution but to get united for the goal of liberating all colonies and oppressed peoples. The history of Yan’an has long been understood and constructed within the context and framework of the Chines Revolution led by the CCP. However, this paper suggests that the history of Yan’an between 1937 and 1945 needs to be understood and constructed also as part of the history of regional radical movements and networks. The radicals and revolu- tionaries supported not only the Chinese anti-Japanese War efforts but a much broader movement for national liberation, independence, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, and even the construction of a new Asia under a new social and political order.
What this paper suggests is to move away from the nationalist historiography that excludes transnational actors and their roles in national history. The history of Yan’an belongs to a broader regional history of radicalism as well. The paper thus concludes that the construction of “transnational national history” is much needed, a history that embraces and underlines the roles and presence of the transnational elements in na- tional history.
