조선 후기 백자 초화문의 유형과 편년사적 의의 (The Typological and Chronological Significance of White Porcelain with Floral Design in the Late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

초화문은 조선 후기 백자에 가장 많이 장식된 문양 중 하나로 시기별로 변화의 과정이 분명하여 조선 후기 백자의 제작과 변화의 動因을 분석할 수 있는 자료이다. 본 연구는 초화문 백자의 발생과 전개 과정을 검토하고 늘어나는 수요와 변화하는 취향에 발맞춰 간 초화문 백자의 면모를 살펴보았다.
17세기 明을 비롯하여 江戶 막부에서는 花卉 愛好 취미의 부흥 및 해외 시장 개척과 맞물려 초화문을 장식한 백자가 본격적으로 제작되었다. 이에 발맞춰 17세기 중엽 조선에서도 여러 매체 속 초화의 도상에 模本을 둔 초화문 백자 제작이 본격화된다. 조선 후기 초화문 백자는 선동리 관요 시기(1640~1648)에 처음 출현하여 이후 조선 후기 내내 제작되며 시기에 따라 세 유형으로 분류할 수 있다.
17세기 후반은 백자 초화문이 출현하는 단계이다. 前面에 들국화, 後面에 난초 속성의 긴 풀을 기본 구성으로 蘭花로 대체하거나 가시나무와 결합하기도 해 발생 과정의 다양한 시도로 확인된다. 18세기 초중엽은 초화문의 전형이 완성되어 다양한 기종에 반복 시문되는 시기다. 초화문의 불필요한 부분이 疏略되는 반면 꽃송이와 풀이 강조되어 초화문의 특성을 강화한다. 18세기 중반을 넘어가면 괴석과 화분 등 새로운 요소가 첨가되는데 當代 성행한 화훼 애호 취미와 정원문화를 투영한 것이다.
백자 초화문의 시기별 유형과 특징은 조선 후기 도자의 제작에 영향을 미친 국내외 환경과 다른 매체와의 관계에 대해 직·간접적으로 살펴볼 수 있게 한다. 또한, 기존의 편년 체계에 더해 문양을 통하여 도자를 편년할 수 있는 단서를 마련한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

The floral design, a prevalent motif in late Joseon dynasty white porcelain production, distinctly manifests its progression across time periods, offering insights into the driving factors behind the production trends and evolving preferences related to ceramicware during that overall era. This study explores the origins and development of white porcelain ware adorned with floral motifs, focusing on their adaptation to the growing demand and shifting tastes of the period.
During the 17th century, in Ming China and Japan under the Edo shogunate, the production of white porcelain featuring floral designs began due to a resurgence in the appreciation of flowering plants and an expansion of overseas markets. By the mid-17th century, Joseon era ceramicists also began crafting white porcelains with floral designs modelled from various media. The earliest examples from the Seondong-ri Royal Kiln period(1640-1648) mark the beginning of this production in Korea, a trend that continued throughout the late Joseon period. These designs can be categorized into three types based on their production periods.
The late 17th century marked the introduction of floral motifs on white porcelains. The basic design typically featured wild chrysanthemums on the front side and orchid-like long grass on the back. This period also saw diverse experiments, such as the substitution of orchid flowers or the integration of Chinese evergreen oak motifs. In the early to mid-18th century, the quintessential floral design was refined, focusing more on the flowers and grass as well as eliminating superfluous elements, thus highlighting the characteristics of floral design more prominently. Post-mid-18th century, new features like decorative auspicious rocks and floral pots were added, mirroring the era’s popular enthusiasm for flowering plants and garden design and cultivation.
Analyzing the types and characteristics of floral designs on white porcelain across the different generational eras of the late Joseon period provides valuable insights into the domestic and international circumstances influencing porcelain production during this time and their relationship to other media. This approach is also significant in offering a further method to chronicle porcelain patterns, complementing existing frameworks of chronological analysis.
