초록

This study examines surrealistic expressions of W. S. Merwin’s poetry in The Lice. Merwin has used surrealism in some poems of The Lice, considered his most bleak and apocalyptic book, to convey his ideas and concerns about human existence, ecological consciousness, anti-war movements, and other social issues. He presented his views using surrealist devices and elements like dreams, ghosts, light, windows, shadows, ash, nightmarish atmosphere, etc. He often uses disparate images together like fantasy and reality, life and death, the real and the imaginary, the past and the future, etc. Utilizing the expressions of surrealism, he tries to urge the readers to change their lifestyles and consider the relationships between humans and nature. In addition, he has used the poetic imagery of darkness to deliver the meaning of death. He thinks death is not opposed to life, but a new beginning in a circle of life or a change in the form of existence and has a circular structure in the universal order. He is bringing death into life, offering hope for life rather than despair over death. These surrealistic expressions and ideas make his poetry exceptional.
