근대전환기 지역공동체의 변화: 기독교와 접속한 평양 (The Metamorphosis of Local Communities in the Transitional Period: Pyongyang Connected to Christianity)

초록

19세기 말 이후 한국의 지역사회에서는 많은 변화가 있었다. 특히 마을의 공간이 새롭게 재편되고 주도세력이 변화하기 시작하였다. 지역공동체의 메타모포시스 현상이 일어났던 것이다. 본고에서는 연구가 상대적으로 미진한 평안도에 위치한 평양을 중심으로 근대전환기 지역공동체의 변화에 대해 살펴봄으로써 연구의 지평을 넓히고자 하였다.
반서양 반기독교적인 분위기가 우세했던 평양은 일제강점기 “조선의 예루살렘”, “민족주의 근거지 평양”, “평양은 아직 조선인의 평양”의 이미지를 가지게 되었다. 이 글에서는 평양이 이러한 이미지를 가지게 된 역사적 과정에 대해 살펴보았다. 이를 밝히기 위해 평양이 기독교를 받아들이기 전의 모습, 기독교에 대한 평양민들의 관점 전환과 교세 확장, 그리고 교세 확장으로 인한 평양의 근대 공간으로 재편과 이를 통해 새롭게 부상한 기독교 정치문화권력 등의 순서로 논지를 전개하였다.
연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1894년 청일전쟁 발발 이전까지 평양민들은 기독교의 신을 서양귀신이라고 여기며 매우 부정적인 시각을 가지고 있었다. 그러나 청일전쟁 이후 평양민들의 기독교에 대한 시각은 호의적으로 바뀌었다. 그 결과 교세가 급격하게 성장하였다. 이와 같이 기독교의 교세가 성장하면서 평양의 중심은 산지대로 옮아가기 시작했다.
평양의 공간은 청일전쟁 이전 대동문 중심에서 청일전쟁 이후 산지대 기독교 공간과 대동문 중심의 공간으로 재편되었다가 러일전쟁 이후에는 산지대의 기독교 공간, 대동문 중심, 평양성 밖 외성 중심으로 재편되었다. 산지대는 영어와 한글을 사용하는 서구문명의 힘과 부, 단군과 기자로 표상되는 평양을 대표하는 민족주의 공간으로 상징되었고, 교회의 새벽종과 주일예배를 알리는 종에 의해 평양민들의 일상을 지배하는 구역이었다. 대동문 중심과 평양성 밖 신시가지는 일본어를 사용하고 일본식 교육을 하는 학교, 일제 식민통치기관이 자리 잡았으며, 일본의 국교인 신도를 숭배하는 곳이었다. 기독교인들의 입장에서 보면 그곳은 평양민들의 생존을 위협하고 우상숭배를 하는 곳이므로 반드시 평양에서 섬멸시켜야 할 공간이었다.
평양의 기독교인들은 산지대를 중심으로 사회관계망을 형성하였다. 그것은 상인들 중심의 사회관계망이었다. 평양의 기독교 상인들은 평양에 거주하기 시작한 일본 상인들로부터 평양의 상권을 지켜내기 위해 많은 노력을 기울였다. 평양의 기독교인들은 교회를 중심으로 사회관계망을 형성하고 각종 사회단체를 조직해 민족의 이름으로 일본과 경쟁하면서 평양의 새로운 정치문화 권력으로 부상하였다. 평양에서는 민족주의를 강조하는 상인 중심의 기독교인들 혹은 이들과 함께 하는 기독교인들이 새로운 정치문화 권력으로 부상했다. 평양은 이러한 역사적 과정을 거쳐 ‘조선의 예루살렘’과 ‘민족주의 평양’으로 불리게 되었다.

영어초록

Since the end of the 19th century, there have been many changes in the Korean community. In particular, the residential village's space was reorganized, and the leading forces in it began to change. It is to occur a phenomenon of metamorphosis in the local community. This paper aims to broaden the research horizon by looking at local communities' changes in the transitional period, focusing on Pyongyang, located in Pyeongan province, where research is relatively unexhausted.
Pyongyang, where the anti-Western and anti-Christian atmosphere prevailed, took on the image of "Jerusalem of Joseon," "Pyongyang, the base of nationalism," and "Pyongyang is still Pyongyang of Koreans" during the Japanese occupation. In this article, I looked at the historical process that led Pyongyang to have its image. For this, it has developed the thesis as follows; The appearance of Pyongyang before accepting Christianity, the transformation of the Pyongyang people's perspective on Christianity, the expansion of the political world, and the reorganization of Pyongyang society into the modern space under the influence of the development of Christianity, and the newly emerged Christian political and cultural power.
The summary of the research results is as follows. Until the Sino-Japanese War outbreak in 1894, the Pyongyang people had a very negative view, considering the god of Christianity as a'Western ghost'. However, after the Sino-Japanese War, the Pyongyang people's view of Christianity changed favorably. As a result, the relationship has proliferated. As Christianity grew in this way, the center of Pyongyang began to move to the mountain regions.
Space, "Pyongyang," was reorganized from the center of the Taedongmun before the Sino-Japanese War to the mountain area Christian room and the Daedongmun center after the Sino-Japanese War. After the Russo-Japanese War, it was reorganized into the mountain area Christian space, the Daedongmun center, and the outer wall outside Pyongyang. The mountain area was symbolized as a nationalistic space representing Pyongyang, represented by Western civilization's power and wealth in English and Korean, and Dangun and Gija. And it was an area where the daily life of Pyongyang people was dominated by the church's early morning bell and the bell to announce Sunday worship. In the center of the Taedongmun Gate and outside the Pyongyang Castle, a new town was located where Japanese-speaking schools and Japanese colonial institutions were found, and these were places to worship Shinto, the state religion of Japan. From the perspective of Christians, the area threatens the survival of the Pyongyang people and worships idols, so it was a space that must be destroyed in Pyongyang. The Christians of Pyongyang formed social networks around the mountain regions. It was a social network centered on merchants. From Japanese merchants who started living in Pyongyang, Christian merchants in Pyongyang made great efforts to protect Pyongyang's commercial district. Christians of Pyongyang began to emerge as a new political and cultural power in Pyongyang, competing with Japan in their nation's name while forming social networks around the church and organizing various social groups. In Pyongyang, merchant-oriented Christians who emphasize nationalism, or Christians emerged as a new political and cultural power. Through this historical process, Pyongyang came to be called "Joseon's Jerusalem" and "Nationalist Pyongyang."
