<세민황제본풀이>에 나타난 경제관과 공동체와의 관계 (A Study on the Economic View and its Relation to Community in “Seminhwangje-bonpuri”)

초록

본고는 제주도의 무속신화 <세민황제본풀이>를 연구대상으로 삼아, 텍스트에 내재된 대립적인 경제관을 도출하고 이를 통해 공동체와 돈에 대한 인식을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다.
<세민황제본풀이>에는 세민황제와 매일‧장상 부부가 등장한다. 그리고 만인적선과 활인지덕의 도를 등가교환체계에서 이해하는 세민황제와 비균형적 교환체계에서 이해하는 매일‧장상 부부의 모습은 대립적으로 나타난다. 세민황제는 이승에서 선행을 베푼 만큼의 등가물이 저승궤에 쌓이는 것으로 이해하고 적선을 등가교환체계 안에서 교환가치로 환원한다. 그러나 매일‧장상 부부는 저승궤에 아무런 관심이 없으며 아직 자신들의 선행이 닿지 않는 타자들에게 관심을 기울인다. <세민황제본풀이>는 활인지덕과 적선지도를 행함에 있어서 세민황제가 아닌 매일‧장상 부부가 보여주는 태도와 방식이 더 적합하다고 묘사한다.
비균형적 교환체계 안에서 세민황제와 매일‧장상 부부의 선행은 ‘타자’를 향해 열려있다. 그러나 등가교환체계 안에서는 타자가 존재하지 않는다. 그것은 화폐의 기능 때문이다. 화폐는 유통되는 사물의 가치를 정확하게 측정하기 위한 안정적인 준거점이다. 가치척도의 일관성을 담보하는 화폐는 등가교환체계를 구축하는 매개체이다. 문제는 화폐를 통해 대상의 가치를 수나 양으로 계산하게 되면 그 안에서 인격성이 소거된다는 점이다. <세민황제본풀이>는 ‘돈’에 대해 다루지만, 돈이 화폐와 다름을 저승돈과 저승궤를 통해 설명한다. 비균형적 교환체계 안에서 돈은 나와 타자를 이어주는 매개가 된다. 타자를 향한 관심은 나와 타자간 연대의식을 만들어내고 상호 증여를 거쳐 상호호혜로 넘어가는 단계를 가능하게 한다.
<세민황제본풀이>가 보여주는 돈에 대한 독특한 관념은 <세민황제본풀이>만의 경제관을 형성한다. 그런데 타자를 향해 열려 있고 결국 공동체를 지향하는 <세민황제본풀이>의 경제학은 다른 무속신화나 제의에서도 발견할 수 있다. 안동의 <시무굿>, 함경도 망묵굿의 <돈전풀이>, 불교의 예수재가 대표적인 사례이다. 이런 일련의 작품들은 <세민황제본풀이>와 마찬가지로 저승돈을 통해 ‘망자’라는 타자나 ‘죽은 이후의 나’라는 타자 등과 지속적으로 연대관계를 유지하게 만든다. 저승돈은 타자와의 관계를 중요시여기며, 그 관계를 호혜적으로 이끈다.
무속에서도, 불교의례에서도 공통적으로 발견되는 저승돈의 경제학은 오늘날 우리의 삶에 일정 정도 영향을 미친다. 저승을 통해 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는가라는 본질적인 문제의식을 던져주기 때문이다. 더 이상 굿판에서 불리지 않음에도 불구하고 <세민황제본풀이>를 다시 읽어보는 것은 그런 이승의 문제를 또는 현실의 문제에 대한 답을 모색하는 과정과 무관하지 않다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to structuralize the conflicting economic views and examine the relation between the community and money by using shamanic myth of Jeju island “Seminhwangje-bonpuri” as the subject of research.
In “Seminhwangje-bonpuri”, the Semin Emperor and the Maeil‧Jangsang couple appear. In addition, the appearance of the Maeil‧Jangsang couple who understand the intentions of the universal good deed and the live-in virtue in the equivalent exchange system and the unbalanced exchange system appear in opposition. Emperor Semin understands that the equivalent of doing good in this world is accumulated in the afterlife, and returns the good deed to exchange value within the equivalent exchange system. However, Maeil‧Jangsang couple are not interested in the afterlife and pay attention to others who have yet to experience their good deeds. “Seminhwangje-bonpuri” describes that the attitudes and methods shown by Maeil‧Jangsang couple are more appropriate in performing saving people virtues and good deed guidance.
In an unbalanced exchange system, the good deeds of the Emperor Semin and the couple of Maeil‧Jangsang are open to the others. However, there are no others in the equivalent exchange system. It is because of the function of commodity money. Commodity money is a stable referencial point for accurately measuring the value of things in circulation of things. Currency that guarantees consistency in the value scale is a medium for establishing an equivalent exchange system. The problem is that when the value of the object is calculated in number or amount through currency, personality is erased. “Seminhwangje-bonpuri” deals with ‘money’, but explains through the afterlife money is different from money in the real world. In an unbalanced exchange system, money is a medium that connects I and others. Interest in the others makes it possible to create a sense of solidarity between I and others and to transfer to reciprocity through mutual donation.
The unique concept of money shown by “Seminhwangje-bonpuri” forms its own economic view. However, the economics of “Seminhwangje-bonpuri”, which is open to others and eventually aims for the community, can be found in other shamanistic myths and ritual. Representative examples include “Donjeon-puri” of Mangmukgut in Hamgyeong-do, “Shimuggut” in Andong, and Buddhist ritual ‘Yesujae’. These series of works, like “Seminhwangje-bonpuri”, make people continue to maintain solidarity with others called “The dead” or “I after death” through the underworld. Money of afterlife values the relationship with others and leads the relationship reciprocally.
The economics of the underworld, which is commonly found in shamanism and Buddhist rituals, has a certain influence on our lives today. This is because it throws a sense of the essential problem of how we should live through the concept of afterlife. Even though it is no longer performed in Gut-pan, reading the “Seminhwangje-bonpuri” is not irrelevant to the process of seeking answers to such problems of this world or real problems.
