식물의 유기체적 생명성 표현에 관한 연구 (A Study on the expression of an organic life of plants)

초록

식물은 순환적인 삶의 원천이자 생태계의 기반이다. 이는 식물이 대지에 산소를 공급하는 동시에 초식 동물들의 필수적인 에너지원으로서 지구 생태계의 중추를 형성하기 때문이다. 본 논문에서는 식물, 그 가운데에서도 특히 식용 식물의 유기체적 생명성 표현에 관해 연구하였다. 이는 본 연구자가 아름다운 꽃이나 수목, 사군자나 관상용 화초들이 아니라 밥상에 올라오는 평범한 식용 식물, 채소의 생명성에 주목했기 때문이다. 예술은 독특하고 신비로운 대상만을 작품 소재로 삼지 않는다. 오히려 특별함 속에 묻혀 있는 평범함에 주목해 그 평범함의 소중함을 발굴함으로써 사물을 바라보는 시각에 보다 폭넓은 사유와 깨달음을 제공하는 역할도 수행한다. 그런 의미에서 작품 속 식용 식물 소재들은 일상 속에 깊이 녹아 있는 친밀함을 익숙하면서도 때로는 낯설게 바라보게 해준다.
식용 식물을 주로 다루고 있는 본 연구자의 작품 세계는 씨앗의 생성에서부터 소멸에 이르기까지의 일련의 생장 과정이 순환적인 동시에 항상(恒常)적인 유기체적 생명성의 특성을 표현하고 있다고 파악하였다. 이와 함께, 군집을 이루며 성장하고 번식하며 소멸하는 버섯과 콩나물 등의 식용 채소들은 인간 사회와 마찬가지로 경쟁하는 동시에 공생하는 삶의 특성을 대변하고 있다고 보았다. 실제로 본 연구자의 작품에 등장하는 군락 식물들은 삶 자체가 개별적인 것이 아니라 서로 얽히고 설켜서 함께 자라고 함께 번성하며 함께 소멸되는, 관계망 속에서의 공동 운명체이기에 작품을 통해 드러나는 이들의 생명성은 익숙하지만 생경하게, 또 조용하지만 치열하게 전개된다.
식용 식물이 지니는 이러한 특성들을 적절하게 표현하기 위해 본 연구자가 택한 채색 기법은 진채(眞彩)이다. 이는 진채가 칠하고 마르는 과정을 끊임없이 반복하는, 물리적인 시간이 필요한 기법이기에 식용 채소의 순환성을 가장 잘 표현한다고 인식했기 때문이다. 생의 주기가 짧기에 오히려 반복적인 생의 주기가 더욱 익숙하게 다가오는 식용 채소의 생명성은 진채 기법으로 다양한 층위(layers)를 이루며 표현된다. 그런 의미에서 볼 때, 본 논문에서 다루는 생명성은 생의 에너지가 갑작스레 발산되는 순간적이고 일회적인 생명성이 아니라 우리 주변에서 발아와 성장, 그리고 소멸이 끊임없이 되풀이되는 ‘순환적’ 인 생명성을 의미한다.
마지막으로 본 연구자가 제작한 작품들은 습식벽화, 흙벽화, 견(絹), 한지와 마(麻) 등 다양한 바탕재 위에서 광물･식물성 안료와 자연 염료, 기타 재료를 사용함으로써, 수많은 식용 식물들의 순환적인 삶과 군집 방식, 유기체적 생명성과 그 특성들을 다층적으로 표현하고자 의도했음을 밝힌다.

영어초록

As for living things, in particular plants are a source of a circulating life and a basis of the ecosystem. The reason is that plants supply the earth with oxygen and play a pivotal role in the ecosystem of the earth as an essential energy source for herbivores. Plants live a life for themselves while taking in the sunlight and water as the representative of the nature. Plants also have a struggling lie for the survival though seemingly less obvious compared with animals. It is being expressed silently by forms that seem static.
This paper examines the expression of an organic life of plants, especially of edible plants. The reason is that this research pays attention to a life of normal edible plants or vegetables on the table rather than beautiful flowers and trees, Four Gracious Plants including plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo and ornamental flowering plants.
Art does not necessarily deal with unique and mysterious ones as its subject matter. Rather, it plays a role of giving a wide range of thinking and recognition to one’s perspective on things by paying attention to the normal hidden in the special so finding out precious beauty of such a normal thing. In that regard, edible plants in the works enable us to look at newly intimate and familiar things inherent in a daily life through a lens of ‘defamiliarization.
A body of my works mainly on edible plants shows that a series of growth processes from germination to extinction expresses a characteristic of an organic life which is variable, circulating, and at the same time constant. Besides, my work view that edible plants including mushrooms and bean sprouts growing, reproducing and dying in a colony represent a characteristic of a life competing and living together like that of a human society. In fact, community plants in my works form a group bound by a common destiny where they grow up, thrive and die together while entwining with each other in a network rather than an individual life. Hence, their lives shown from my works are developed in an unfamiliar and silent but intense way.
A coloring technique adopted in this study is deep coloring to express characteristics of edible plants properly. The reason is that deep coloring expresses circulation of edible plants most adequately since it is a technique requiring physical time for repeating coloring and drying. Life cycles of edible plants are short but repetitive, and their familiar lives are expressed by composing various layers with deep coloring through‘defamiliarization. In this regard, a life in this thesis means not momentary life where energy of a life is released suddenly but ‘circulating’ life where germination, growth and extinction are repeated endlessly. Furthermore, edible plants have to endure fierce competition in a colony and at the same time they are positioned at the table most intimately with human beings than any other plant so they express both flexible and tough vitality completely. Therefore, deep coloring was used because they correspond to its characteristics layering one on the other.
Finally, my works aim at expressing circulative lives and colonies of numerous edible plants, their organic lives and characteristics from a multilayered perspective using natural pigments, dyes and others on a variety of grounds including mural painting such as fresco and secco, silk, Korean paper and linen.
