2024년 말 현재, 코로나19 팬데믹은 종식 선언(WHO, 2023년 5월 5일) 이후 1년 반이 좀 지났으나 벌써 사람들의 기억에서 희미해졌다. 이 글은 공식적으로 3년 4개월간 지속된 전 인류적 재난인 팬데믹 체제에서 온라인으로 진행된 대학 수업의 현장을 학생들의 목소리(강의 평가에 익명으로 남긴 의견)를 통해 기록하기 위한 실증적인 성격을 띤다. 더불어, 갈수록 축소되는 인문학 및 교양강의가 코로나19로 돌출된 현대문명의 위기를 극복할 ‘인간성 회복’의 공간이 될 수 있으며, ‘나’를 넘어선 공동체 의식이 ‘온라인’에서도 얼마든지 형성될 수 있음을 학생들이 스스로 입증한 사례를 보고하기 위한 것이다. 코로나19를 통해 인류가 무엇을 배우고 무엇을 바꾸어야 하는가에 대한 문제의식을 견지하면서, 인문 교양강의가 ‘시적 마음’과 ‘교양’의 회복을 통해 기후 위기 극복에 기여할 수 있음을 ‘온라인’ 공간에서 확인한 것이기도 하다.
포스트 코로나는 이타적 행동이 타자를 위한 윤리이자 ‘나의 생존을 위한 필연’이 된 시대이다. ‘이타적 공생’이 개인의 삶의 원리이자 정치·경제·사회·문화의 기본 원리로 부상하고 있는 것은 팬데믹이 낳은 역설이다. 팬데믹 체제는 개인/개별성/고립의 감각을 심화시켰으나, 공동체/연결성/연대에 대한 갈망도 증폭시켰다. 포스트 코로나 시대에 인류의 과제는 폭력과 죽음을 양산하는 현대문명의 파괴적 시스템을 ‘모두가 더불어 살아가는 생명의 체제’로 전환하는 데 있다. 이때 ‘생명’은 단지 생물학적 개념이 아닌, 문명의 작동방식과 인간의 존재론적 차원 등을 모두 포괄한다. 현대문명의 생태적 전환을 위해서는 위기 극복의 주체가 바로 ‘나’이며 ‘우리’라는 자각, 지구 전체가 하나의 생명공동체라는 의식, 인류가 지구의 모든 비/생명체가 함께 번성하기 위한 공존의 윤리와 협력적 행동 등을 ‘교육’을 통해 전파하는 것이 급선무다. 사회 제도와 과학을 통한 해법도 필요하지만, 인간 개개인이 생명을 지키려는 마음을 갖고 실천하는 것이 근본적으로 중요하기 때문이다.
이 글은 앞으로 교양강의가 나아가야 할 방향을 기후 위기 극복의 토대인 ‘시적 마음’과 ‘교양’의 회복이라는 관점에서 모색해보았다. ‘시적 마음’과 ‘교양’은 ‘나’와 ‘너’가 ‘우리’가 되거나 이미 ‘우리’임을 깨달을 때, 즉 공동체 의식을 내면화할 때 발현된다. 이 글은 학습자들이 글쓰기 공동체로서 형성한 연대와 우정을 바탕으로 ‘치유’를 경험하고 생명공동체 의식에 이르게 된 과정을 기록한 사례연구의 성격을 지니며, ‘시적 마음’의 공유를 통한 공동체 의식의 형성과 확산을 온라인 공간에서 학습들의 자발적인 움직임을 통해 확인했다는 데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

As of the end of 2024, the COVID-19 pandemic has largely faded from people’s memories, even though it has been a little over a year and a half since the declaration of an end (WHO, May 5, 2023). This article officially takes on the empirical nature of recording the scenes of college classes conducted online through the voices of students (the opinions left anonymously in the lecture evaluation) in the pandemic system, a global human disaster that has lasted for three years and four months. In addition, the aim is to report cases in which students have proved themselves that humanities and liberal arts lectures can be a space for ‘recovery of humanity’ to overcome the crisis of modern civilization that has been protruded by COVID-19, and that a sense of community beyond ‘themselves’ can be formed online as much as possible. It also confirmed in the ‘online’ space that humanities and liberal arts lectures can contribute to overcoming the climate crisis through the recovery of ‘poetic mind’ and ‘culture,’ while maintaining a sense of the problem of what humanity should learn and change through COVID-19.
The post-COVID-19 is an era in which altruistic behavior has become an ethics for others and an ‘inevitable for my survival’. It is the paradox created by the pandemic that ‘other symbiosis’ is emerging as a principle of individual life and as a basic principle of politics, economy, society and culture. The pandemic system deepened the sense of individual/individuality/isolation, but also amplified the desire for community/connectivity/ solidarity. The challenge for mankind in the post-COVID-19 era is to transform the destructive system of modern civilization that produces violence and death into a ‘system of life in which everyone lives together’. At this time, ‘life’ is not just a biological concept but encompasses both the way civilization works and the ontological dimension of humans. For the ecological transformation of modern civilization, it is imperative to spread the awareness that the subject of overcoming the crisis is ‘I’ and ‘we’ as a whole, the consciousness that the Earth is a single life community, and the ethics and cooperative behavior of coexistence for mankind to thrive together through ‘education’. Solutions through social systems and science are also necessary, but it is fundamentally important for each human being to practice with the mind of protecting life.
This article explores the future direction of liberal arts lectures through the perspective of recovery of the ‘poetic mind’ and ‘culture’, which are the foundations for overcoming the climate crisis. ‘Poetic mind’ and ‘culture’ are manifested when ‘I’ and ‘you’ become ‘we’ or realize that they are already ‘we’, that is, when they awaken a sense of community. This article is meaningful in that it is a case study that records the process of experiencing ‘healing’ and leading to a sense of life based on the solidarity and friendship that learners formed as a writing community, and confirmed the formation and spread of a sense of community through the sharing of a ‘poetic mind’ through the voluntary movement of learners in the online space.
