초록

역사 인물 이야기는 지형 및 지명에 얽힌 이야기와 함께, 공동체의 역사와 전통을 계승하고 수호하고자 하는 남성 연행자들에 의해 최우선적인 연행 목록으로 구성된다. 지역 내 실존했던 것으로 전해지는 인물에 관한 이야기는 집단 내부의 결속을 강화하며 이와 같은 이야기를 할 수 있는 자격을 부여받은 이들을 이야기판으로 끌어들인다.
역사 인물 이야기의 연행과 전승을 떠받치는 근간은 흔히 이야기 속에 등장하는 인물과 사건의 ‘역사적 실재성’에 있는 것으로 오해된다. 연행 주체는 해당 이야기 속의 인물과 사건의 진실성에 대해 일종의 믿음을 갖고 있다. 이 믿음이 공동체에 대한 자부심의 핵심부를 구성한다. 그러나 이 믿음은 이야기 속 인물과 사건의 실재성에 대한 믿음이 아니라 이야기의 전통과 권위에 대한 믿음, 이야기하는 자의 자격과 권위에 대한 믿음이라고 할 수 있다. 연행 주체에게 중요한 것은 이야기 속 인물과 사건의 실재성 여부가 아니라 이야기를 진실로 믿고 있다는 태도를 연행을 통해 드러내 보이는 것, 연행 현장에 참여한 이들 사이의 신뢰 관계나 공동체가 이들에게 부여한 자격이 보증하는 것, 그리고 이야기가 표상하는 공동체의 역사와 전통에 대해 흔들리지 않는 신뢰와 자부심을 표현하는 것이다.
이야기가 역사가 되는 것은 믿기 때문에 말하는 것이 아니라 말해지기 때문에 믿는 것에 가깝다. ‘전설’을 말하는 것이 ‘역사’를 말하는 것으로 인식된다는 것과 ‘전설’ 속 사건이 역사적으로 실재했던 것으로 인식된다는 것 사이에 논리적 연관성이 없다. 이때 ‘역사적 사실로 말하는 것’은 일종의 수사적 전략이다. 역사 인물 이야기의 서사적 진실은 역사적 실재에 대한 강박을 벗어던지고 일종의 ‘메타 역사’로서 공동체의 전통과 역사를 구성한다. 역사의 서사화가 아니라 서사의 역사화라는 새로운 국면이 열리는 것이다.

영어초록

The performance of orally transmitted stories is based on community. The key motivation for the communal performance is to pass on the values and rules of the community and to maintain the community itself by doing so.
The stories about historical people, together with the stories related to geology and names of geography, constitute the most favored list of performance by male performers who want to carry on the history and tradition of their community. The stories about the people who really existed in the community strengthen the community's solidarity, and those who are given the right to convey the stories are included in the story telling arena. It means that only those who have special authority for storytelling can participate in the performance. The performance of the stories about historical people hence promotes the community with a 'closed boundary' led by the group of all male members.
This community does not allow its female members to have an opportunity to participate. The stories of the historical people present a special sense of pride to the members of the community and give them a qualification to take part in the performance as members of the community. When all male members with the same background from the same region consists of a 'closed community' through the performance of stories about the historical people, the stories become recognized as a kind of cultural resource and a discoursive resource that are valued as part of the community.
The foundation that supports the performance and transmission of the stories of historical people has been misunderstood as the "historical substantiality" of the characters and events of the stories. The subject of performance has a certain faith in the veracity of the characters and events of the relevant story. And that faith explains the heart of pride in the community. However, the faith is based not on the substantiality of the characters and events of the story, but on the tradition and authority of the story, and the qualification and authority of the storyteller. What is important to the subject of performance is not to illuminate whether there is the substantiality of the characters and events, but to reveal the attitude of truly believing in the story presented by the performance, to sustain their the right bestowed upon by the community and the good relationship among the performers, and to reproduce the solid faith and pride in the history and tradition of the community that the story represents.
