공동체의 가능 근거 모색을 위한 유가의 공동체주의와 서양의 ‘개인’ 개념 고찰 (A Study on the confucian community and the western individual concept for seeking possible foundation of community)

초록

평등 공동체 실현을 위한 논의에서 동양 유가의 공동체주의와 서양 근세의개인주의 관점은 상호 대립적이다. 강단 유학자들은 이기적이고 개별화된 개인주의가 유발하는 정치·사회적 문제의 원인을 서양 근세의 개인 개념에서찾는데 반해서, 서양 근세의 정신은 동양의 유가철학이 제시하는 관계 지향적공동체의식이야말로 불평등한 사회체제를 더욱 공고히 할 뿐이라고 비판한다. 본 논문에서는 공동체주의와 개인주의 간의 기존의 이원화된 대립적 논의를 지양하고, 개인 개념 자체 안에서 공동체의 가능성을 모색한다. 이를 위해서 본 연구는 다음의 두 가지 주제를 단계적으로 논의한다. 첫째, 기존의 강단유학자들의 견해처럼『예기』「 예운」편의 ‘소강의 세상’을 공동체의 이상적인 원형에 근접한 세상으로 보지 않고 ‘소유’와 ‘세습’으로 인해 불평등한 사회적 위계질서가 존재한 신분제 사회에 불과하다는 사실을 강조한다. 동일한 맥락에서 유가의 공동체주의를 언급할 때 자주 등장하는 ‘유기체적 자연관’이 과연공동체 형성을 위한 적합한 자연관이 될 수 있는지를 비판적으로 살펴보았다.
둘째, 공동체의 가능근거로서의 개인 개념을『맹자』의 ‘대인’(大人) 개념과 칸트‘인격’(人格) 개념에서 모색한다. 두 개념은 공통적으로 너와 나, 네 것과 내 것을 구분 짓는 구별과 경계를 넘어 사회적 ‘연대’를 통한 공동체를 가능하게 하는 초월적이며 형이상학적 차원의 개념이라는 사실을 밝힌다.
본 연구는 강단 유학자들의 공동체주의와 개인주의 간의 소모적인 논쟁의한계를 지적하면서, 유교의 개인 개념을 사회 정치적 지평으로 확대하여 연대와 공동체의 가능근거로서 해석한 데에 의미가 있다.

영어초록

In the debate for realizing a egalitarian community, the perspective of the confucianism of the East and the individualism of the West are mutually antagonistic. While academic scholars find the cause of the political and social problems that the self-centered and individualized individualism brings about in the individualism of the West, the spirit of Western modern timesjust criticizes that the relation-oriented community spirit of the confucian philosophy of the East proposes moresecures an unequal social system.
In this paper, the confrontational debate between the communalism and the individualism is sublated and the possibility of the community in the individual concept itself is sought for. For it, this study will gradually discuss the following two subjects. First, not in the way that the point of view of the established academic scholars regards ‘小康’(xiǎokāng) in『禮記』(ShīLǐ)「禮運」(lǐyùn) as the society that comes close to the ideal model of the community, this study emphasises it is the mere society where inequality and hierarchy resulted from ownership and inheritance exist. In the same context, it is critically considered whether ‘an organic view of nature’ could be the suitable view for forming the community. Second, it is sought for that the individual concept as a possible foundation of the community is found in ‘大人’(dàrén) in『孟子』(Mèngzǐ) and in Kant’s concept of the personality. It is illuminated that both concepts commonly transcend the boundary and the distinction that differentiate you and me from yours and mine. And also, they are transcendental and metaphysical concepts that make the community through the social solidarity possible. This study is worth in that it is possibly interpreted as the possible basis for solidarity and community by pointing out the limits of exhausting debate of the academic scholars between the individualism and the communalism and expanding the individual concept of the confucian to social and political horizons.
