四書언해의 존대법 변용 －교정청본과 율곡본을 중심으로－ (Variations of the Honorific System of Language in Saseo Eonhae: Focusing on Gyojeongcheong version and Yulgok's version)

초록

필자는 선행 연구에서 선조조 경서언해서의 존대법을 고찰한 결과, ‘도통론’과 ‘상황논리’라는 두 가지 대원칙이 존재함을 밝혔다. 하지만 여기에 부합하지 않는 예외사항을 어떻게 이해해야 하는지는 분석하지 못하였기에, 본고에서 예외사항이 실은 예외가 아니라 존대법 원칙의 변용임을 밝히고 그에 내재된 함의를 추론하였다.
교정청본과 율곡본 사서언해는 맹자와 告子의 대화 및 공자를 비판하는 隱者들의 말을 언해하면서 도통론의 한 측면인 闢異端에 의거하였고, 누군가의 말 속에 언급되는 제후의 언행에는 존대하지 않는 것을 기본으로 삼았다. 또 존댓말을 쓰지 않았지만 결코 낮추었다고 보기 어려운 ‘중간적 표현’이 존재한다는 것도 두 언해서가 동일하였다.
그러나 도통론과 상황논리의 존대법을 함께 적용해야 할 경우, 官撰인 교정청본은 도통론이 상황논리를 압도하여, 제후 앞에서 공자를 압존하고, 대화 구간을 벗어난 제후의 行은 낮추어 상대적으로 맹자를 높이며, 殷의 賢君에게는 존대하지 않고 周의 先君에게만 존대하였다.
반면, 율곡본은 항상 상황논리를 유념하여 증자와 안자를 존대하되 공자 앞에서는 압존하고, 대화 상대자에 따라 인용되는 제후들의 언행을 낮추기도 하고 높이기도 하였다. 즉 율곡본은 교정청본보다 도통론을 유연하게 적용하고 상황논리의 존대법은 다양하게 변용하였다.

영어초록

In a previous work, this author inspected how the honorific system of language was applied to Confucian classic annotations in Korean which were published in the reign of King Seonjo. As a result, it was found that underlying that system are two main principles which are theory of mastering the way or ‘dotongron’ and situational logic or ‘sanghwangnonri’. However, the previous research was unsuccessful in determining how to understand exceptions that didn't comply with any of the two principles. The objectives of this study were to verify that such exceptions are just variations of the principles and infer implications that the variations have.
Both Gyojeongcheong version of Saseo Eonhae and Yulgok's version of the annotated literature cling to one of the elements of dotongron, that is, byeokyidan[repelling of heresy] as they annotate conversation between Meng-zi and Gao-zi and hermits' criticism of Confucius. Also, the two versions have a common basic rule that no honorific words are used to annotate quoted speech from feudal lords. Nevertheless, both the versions include some annotations that hard to be determined between being honorific and being humble or, in other words. ‘moderate’ in style.
Gyojeongcheongbon version of Saseo Eonhae braces for dotongron as well as sanghwangnonri in terms of the honorific system of language. Indeed, however, the former principle overwhelms the latter one. The version treats speech from Confucius in a less honorific way than feudal lords. Also, it depicts behavior by the lords in a less respectful way than Meng-zi in order to position him relatively higher. Moreover, Gyojeongcheong version applies the honorific system of language when dealing with utterance only by monarchs of Zhou dynasty, excluding those of Yin dynasty.
In contrast, Yulgok's version maintains sanghwangnonri throughout itself. Accordingly, that version has speech from Zeng-zi or Yan-zi annotated with honorific words whose degree gets lowered when the version works with Confucius. When it comes to feudal lords' speech or behavior, Yulgok's version dictates it in either honorific or humble style depending on who the lords converse with. Thus, Yulgok's version utilizes dotongron more flexibly than Gyojeongcheongbon version, and provides more variations of the honorific system of language under sanghwangnonri than the other version.
