초록

Anne Bradstreet is one of a few seventeenth-century American Puritan poets. Up to the 1960s, the established literary criticism about Anne Bradstreet had generally assumed that her poetry embodies religious enthusiasm in the seventeenth century. Her poetry was being conceived and produced in the particular political and cultural context, namely, when the Puritan hegemony was in the ascendancy.
Anne Bradstreet's life and work should be accounted for in the context of Puritan attitudes toward women. From medieval Christianity New England colonists inherited a systematic subordination of women in theory and fact. Relationships within the family which was the “root whence church and commonwealth come” were patriarchal. In her poems, however, Bradstreet shows strong interest in self-identity and female subjectivity, and makes reference to the hostility her poetry would meet because of her sex. This study tries to explore the significance of the writings of Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan woman-poet, as a means of affirmation of female subjectivity and writing against the patriarchal society as well as a means of self-expression in a period governed by the doctrine called Puritanism.
