靑銅器時代 小形石室의 特徵과 意味 (The Characteristic and Meaning of the Small Cists in the Bronze Age)

초록

이 글은 남한지역에서 발견된 청동기시대 분묘의 길이가 110cm 이내인 소형석실에 대해 분석한 글이다. 소형석실은 분묘군에 흔히 발견되지만 이에 대한 연구는 청동기시대 전기부터 축조되었고, 유・소아의 무덤으로만 알려져 있을 뿐 소형석실에 대한 종합적인 연구는 미진한 편이다. 소형석실의 분포와 분류, 소형석실의 군집에서 배치 유형, 부장유물 등을 검토하여 지역성과 변천 양상, 장법, 사회적 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다.
남한의 청동기시대 분묘 중 소형석실이 발견된 군집수가 많은 61개 유적 1,371기의 석실을 분석한 결과 소형석실은 거의 1/3인 32.7%를 차지하나 지역성이 강하게 나타나고 있음이 확인되었다. 소형석실의 형식은 일반 석실 구조와 동일하며, 판석을 이용한 석관형이 절대 다수이지만 경남을 중심으로 한 남해안지역과 충남을 중심으로 한 서해안지역의 석실 형식의 선호 차이가 있다. 소형석실은 지역적으로 경남지역과 석관묘가 중심을 이루고 있다.
소형석실은 석관묘와 지석묘 군집군의 중심에 위치하지 못하고, 대부분 중심 묘역 주변에 자리하고 있는 것이 특징이다. 석관묘의 경우 3-6기의 소군집 내에 있지만 단독으로 독립된 것도 많으며, 지석묘의 경우 주로 1.5m 내외의 소형 상석을 이용하고 있다. 특히 호남지역에서 중・대형 지석묘의 소형석실은 기반식 지석묘와 결합되어 나타난 것이 특징이다. 부장유물은 청동기가 없지만 석검, 석촉, 부장토기류, 옥 등 청동기시대 분묘 출토품과 같은 양상이나 지역적 차이를 보이고 있으며, 경남지역을 중심으로 부장토기와 옥의 부장이 성행하고 있다.
이러한 분석 결과에서 청동기시대 전기의 소형석실은 단독이나 소군집에서 확인되고, 중기에 와서 석관묘의 소군집, 지석묘군에서 배장이나 2-3기가 세트 관계를 보이면서 성행하였다. 소형석실의 장법은 인골자료에서 성인의 화장, 여자의 굴장, 유・소아의 신전장과 굴장・화장이 확인되었지만 성인의 신전장 규모에서도 화장이 유행한 점에서 소형석실 중 상당수는 성인의 화장묘일 가능성이 있음을 밝혔다. 소형석실은 기본적으로 무덤이지만 일부는 제의와 관련된 제단적 성격과 집단 상징물의 매납 공간적 성격으로 활용하였을 가능성을 가설로 제시하였다. 유・소아장으로 볼 때 소형석실의 성행은 소아의 사망률이 매우 높았을 가능성이 있다. 또 대규모 석실군집에서 소형석실이 다수 확인된 점과 성인과 같은석실을 채택한 점에서 유력집단의 형성과 권력자의 등장과 관련하여 청동기시대 사회의 발전과정을 살필 수있다는데, 소형석실이 지닌 사회적 의미는 매우 크다고 할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the small-sized stone chamber tombs within a length of 110cm during the Bronze Age, which are discovered in South Korea. Comprehensive studies about small-sized stone chambers are not entirely sufficient. Because small-sized stone chambers are commonly founded in a group of tombs, however; it is just figured out that they were constructed from the early Bronze Age and were a grave of infants. Therefore, this study examines the regionality, changes, burial methods and social meanings by analyzing the dispersion, classification, layout type and burial materials of the small-sized stone chambers.
As the result of analyzing 1,371 stone chambers in 61 sites having a large number of groups found small-sized stone chambers in the Bronze-age tombs in South Korea, the small-sized stone chambers are 32.7%(approximately one-third), and have strong regionality. Their form has the identical structure with normal stone chambers, moreover; a cist style made from stone slabs is absolutely the majority. But there is different preference for stone chamber style between the southern and western coastal area. Gyeongnam region and the stone-coffin tombs are the mainstream of the small-sized stone chambers.
Not located in the centre of the group of the cist tombs and the dolmens, the small-sized stone chambers are mainly placed in the vicinity. In an instance of the cist tombs, they are located in a small group or separately. In the domens, small-sized upright stones about 1.5m are used. Besides, it is characteristically revealed that the small-sized stone chambers of the medium-large sized dolmens combine with the base-shaped dolmens particularly in Honam region. Their burial materials show the similar classification with the excavated objects from the normal Bronze Age tombs such as stone daggers, stone arrowheads, earthenwares and pieces of jade despite no bronzeware found. But there is regional distinguishment that the burial of earthenwares and pieces of jade is prevalent in and around Gyeongnam area.
In consequence, the small-sized stone chambers in the early Bronze Age are observed individually or in a small group. In the middle Bronze Age, it became widespread as a set of 2~3 chambers in a small group of stone-coffin tombs or in a group of dolmens. The burial methods of the small-sized chambers, in addition, from human bone materials proved a cremation in adult death, a female burial with limbs folded(gool-jang) as well as a supine burial(sinjeon-jang), gooljang and cremation in infant death. Nevertheless, it is highly possible that a great number of the small-sized stone chambers was adult cremation tombs in the trend of cremation in adult supine burials. Also, the small-sized stone chambers were basically tombs, however; there is another possibility that they were used as an ritual altar or a burying space for communal symbolic objects.
Regarding an infant funeral, furthermore, the prevalence of the small-sized stone chambers is possibly related to the high infantile mortality. In consideraiton of discovering the numerous small-sized stone chambers in a large group and of adult stone chambers adopted, in short, the social significance of the small-sized stone chambers is much important in order to figure out the process of social development during the Bronze Age concerning the formation of a powerhouse and an appearance of an authority.
