초록

본고는 기존 잡지의 틀을 전면 재배치한 잡지 『창작과비평』의 가치를 평가하고, 당대에 『창작과비평』이 ‘이월가치’를 지닌 작품을 생산해내는 매체로 사용되었음을 백낙청의 글과 수록된 작품을 토대로 평가하는 데 목적이 있다. 오늘날 방영웅의 『분례기』, 서기원의 「아리랑」, 이청준의 「병신과 머저리」 같은 작품을 ‘이월가치’를 지닌 작품으로 평가하고 연구하는 것이 의미 있는가라는 의문을 가질 수 있다. 그러나 공히 풍경의 성립은 체계적이고 방대한 영역에서 진행된 변동을 동반해야 생산된다. 이미 ‘결정’된 풍경이 있다는 것, 다양한 분석이 가능한 대상이 되었다는 것이 ‘이월가치’를 획득했다는 반증이 아닐 수 없다.
『창작과비평』은 ‘이월가치’ 개념을 통해 그동안 정전의 목록에 오르려면 거쳐야 하는 단계들을 간소화했고 신인도 충분히 정전대열에 합류할 수 있도록 했다. 1966년 『창작과비평』에 소설을 수록한 이청준은 1965년 『사상계』에서 「퇴원」으로 신인문학상을 받은 신인 작가이며, 방영웅은 『창작과비평』 통권 6~8호에 장편을 연재하면서 등단한 신인이다. 1955년 『문학예술』 7월호에 「탈향」으로 등단한 이호철은 초기 고향 상실에서 비롯된 작가적 체험을 재현했지만, 60년대부터 전후(戰後) 남북한의 실상과 이데올로기를 둘러싼 단편을 창작하기 시작했다. 『창작과비평』 창간호에 수록된 이호철의 「고여 있는 바닥―어느 理髮所에서」는 전후 남북한 소시민들의 심상 지리를 적나라하게 보여주며, 자기 검열하는 시대상을 적시한다. 오늘날 이호철의 문학적 가치를 대표하는 작품의 탄생이 『창작과비평』으로 견인되었다는 점을 상기할 필요가 있다. 이처럼 『창작과비평』은 뛰어난 신인의 작품을 선별, 이를 감상할 수 있도록 만드는 풍경과 사회적 담론을 동시에 제시해 이들 작품에 ‘이월적 가치’를 부여함으로써 정전이라는 감상공간의 대열에 올라설 수 있도록 했다.
이어 『창작과비평』은 기존 잡지 형태를 완전히 바꿈으로 인식의 틀, 미학적 담론, 실천의 장으로 역할을 하면서, 사회와 인간 삶의 리듬과 조응하는 매체 플랫폼의 변화를 가져온다. 편집체계에 변화를 단행, 정태적이며 평면적인 잡지가 아닌 동적이며 입체적 공간으로 잡지들의 이월적 가치를 지닌 ‘모델’이 되었다.

This paper aims to examine the value of the magazine Creation and Criticism, which completely rearranged the framework of the existing magazines and to evaluate it on the basis of Baek Nak-cheong’s writings and works contained in the magazine, saying that Creation and Criticism was used as a medium for producing works with ‘carry-over value’. One might wonder if it is meaningful to evaluate and study works with carry-over value such as Bang Young-woong’s Bunyegi, Seo Gi-won’s Arirang, and Lee Chung-joon’s Byeongshin and Idiot, which are sufficiently composed of audiences and can be analyzed. The reputation is produced only when accompanied by systematic and extensive changes. The fact that there is already a “decided” landscape in Creation and Criticism and that it has been subject to various analyses is proof that it has already acquired a “carry-over value.” Creation and Criticism simplifies the steps that must be taken in order to be on the list of canon through the concept of ‘carry-over value’, and allows the less experienced or new writers to sufficiently join the canon.
Lee Chung-jun, who included his novel in Creation and Criticism in 1966, won the New Literary Award in 1965 in Sasang-Gye , and Bang Young-woong started his literary career by publishing a series of novels in Creation and Criticism in six to eight volumes. Lee Ho-cheol, who started his career as Escape from the hometown in 1955, recreated the writer’s experience that originated from the loss of his hometown in the early years, and began to create short stories about the citizens’ mental geography surrounding the realities and ideologies of the two Koreas before and after the 1960s. Lee Ho-cheol’s A Pooled Floor―at a Barber’s Shop in the first issue of Creation and Criticism clearly showed the mental geography of the citizens on the settlement of ideology between the two Koreas after the Korean war and indicated the era of self-censorship. It is worth remembering that the birth of a work representing the literary value of Lee Ho-cheol today was towed to Creation and Criticism. Creation and Criticism selected the works of outstanding new writers or less experienced writers, and presented landscapes and social discourses that enabled them to appreciate them at the same time, giving them ‘carry-over value’, so that they could reach the ranks of canon.
Creation and Criticism then brings about changes in the media platform that adjusts with the rhythm of society and human life, serving as a venue for recognition, aesthetic discourse and practice by completely changing the existing magazine form. Creation and Criticism has become models for today’s magazines not as a static and flat magazine but as a dynamic and three-dimensional space.
