주의회복이론에 기반한 대중교통 플랫폼 회복환경 공간개선 연구 -지하철역 플랫폼을 중심으로- (A Study on Spatial Improvement of Restorative Environments in Public Transit Platforms Based on Attention Restoration Theory - Focused on Subway Station Platforms -)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 도시 지하철역은 대중교통의 핵심 인프라일 뿐만 아니라, 일상적인 체류 공간으로서 이용자의 심리와 정서에 영향을 미친다. 최근 도시환경에서의 회복적 공간구성에 대한 관심이 높아지는 가운데, 본 연구는 지하철 플랫폼 공간을 심리적 회복환경으로 전환할 수 있는 가능성에 주목하였다. 이에 따라 주의회복이론(Attention Restoration Theory)을 기반으로대중교통 플랫폼의 회복환경 특성을 분석하고, 향후 공간개선 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. (연구방법) 연구는 주의회복이론의 핵심 요소를 바탕으로 매력성, 벗어남, 짜임새, 적합성, 규모의 다섯 가지 분석 틀을 구성하고, 이를 세분화한 15개 항목의 평가 기준을 마련하였다. 서울시 내 주요 환승역 6곳(강남역, 서울역, 종각역, 홍대입구역, 청담역, 수서역)을 대상으로 현장관찰 및 체크리스트 기반 정량 평가를 병행하여 회복환경 구성 특성을 비교 분석하였다. (결과) 사례분석 결과, 수서역과 서울역은 짜임새와 적합성 항목에서 높은 점수를 받아 회복환경으로서의 가능성이 높게 나타난 반면, 강남역, 종각역, 홍대입구역은 상업 중심구조와 시각적 자극, 혼잡한 동선, 자연요소 부재 등의 이유로 회복환경으로서의 기능이 낮게 나타났다. 전체 평균 점수 비교에서‘적합성(2.28)’과‘짜임새(2.22점)’가 상대적으로 높았고, ‘벗어남(1.78점)’과 ‘규모(1.95점)’는 가장 낮은 점수를 기록하였다. 특히 자연요소 도입(B2), 심미성(F2), 공공성(S3) 항목에서 사례 간 편차가 크게 나타났으며, 이는 역사별 공간설계와 주변 맥락에 따라 회복환경 요소의 구현 정도가 뚜렷하게 달라짐을 보여준다. 특히 각 사례의 점수 분포를 통해 회복환경요소 간 상호 영향 관계와 공간 설계의 방향성을 유추할 수 있었다. 또한, 동일한 유형의 역사라도 물리적 구성 방식에 따라 이용자의 체류 경험과 심리적 반응은 크게 달라질 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과는 플랫폼 공간이 여전히 정보 전달과 동선 중심의 기능에 집중되어 있으며, 심리적 안정성과 정서적 회복을 위한 환경적 요소는 상대적으로 부족하다는 공통된 경향을 보여준다. 특히 안내체계나 접근성은 잘 구축되어 있었으나, 감성적 콘텐츠 부재나 자연요소의 도입 미흡 등은 향후 개선이 필요한주요 지점으로 도출되었다. (결론) 본 연구는 대중교통 플랫폼이 기능 중심 공간을 넘어 심리적 회복을 유도하는 도시 공공공간으로 전환될 수 있는 가능성을 사례분석을 토대로 제시하였다. 회복환경 구현을 위해서는 자연요소의 적극적인 도입, 시각 자극의 완화, 휴식과 이동이 공존할 수 있는 공간 흐름의 설계, 지역성을 반영한 콘텐츠 구성 등이 요구된다. 이러한 설계 전략은 지하철 플랫폼 공간을 심리적 회복과 정서적 안정을 아우르는 복합적 공공공간으로 재구성하는 데 기여할 수 있으며, 나아가 도시대중교통 환경의 질적 전환을 위한 구체적인 설계 지침 및 정책 기준으로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Urban subway stations serve not only as key public transportation infrastructures but also as everyday environments that influence users’ psychological and emotional states. Amid the growing interest in restorative space design within urban contexts, this study focuses on the potential of transforming subway platform spaces into psychological restorative environments. Based on the Attention Restoration Theory (ART), this study aims to analyze the restorative characteristics of transit platforms and explore future directions for spatial improvement. (Method) This study established five analytical criteria, Fascination, Being Away, Coherence, Compatibility, and Scale, further divided into 15 sub-elements. Six major transfer stations of Seoul (Gangnam, Seoul Station, Jonggak, Hongik University, Cheongdam, and Suseo) were selected as case studies. Field observation and a checklist-based quantitative evaluation were conducted to compare the restorative attributes of each platform. (Results) The results showed that the Suseo and Seoul Stations scored high in the categories of coherence and compatibility, indicating strong restorative potential. In contrast, Gangnam University, Jonggak University, and Hongik University stations exhibited low levels of restorative functionality due to commercial dominance, visual overstimulation, complex circulation, and lack of natural elements. Among all criteria, Compatibility (2.28) and Coherence (2.22) recorded the highest average scores, whereas Being Away(1.78) and Scale (1.95) scored the lowest. Notably, significant differences were observed across stations in sub-categories such as natural elements (B2), visual aesthetics(F2), and publicness(S3), demonstrating the impact of the presence or absence of design features and contextual surroundings on restorative quality. The distribution of scores also suggests interdependencies among elements and indicates that even similar types of stations can offer vastly different user experiences depending on their physical configurations. A common tendency was noted; subway platform spaces remain focused on information delivery and circulation-oriented functions, whereas the environmental elements that support psychological stability and emotional restoration remain relatively underdeveloped. Although guidance systems and accessibility were generally well established, the lack of sensory-rich content and insufficient integration of natural elements emerged as key areas for future improvement. (Conclusions) Through a case analysis, this study presents the potential for public transit platforms to evolve beyond function-oriented spaces into urban public environments that promote psychological restoration. To implement restorative environments, it is essential to actively incorporate natural elements; mitigate visual overstimulation; design spatial flows that accommodate both movement and rest; and integrate content that reflects the local identity. Such design strategies can transform subway platforms into multifaceted public spaces that foster psychological recovery and emotional stability. Furthermore, they may serve as concrete design guidelines and policy references to improve the quality of urban transit environments.
