明治期における「ロビンソン・クルーソー」の英語学習書としての活用と翻訳の変遷 (Changes in the use of “Robinson Crusoe” as an English study book and its translation during the Meiji period -Focusing on analysis of English study books from 1898 to 1909-)

초록

“Robinson Crusoe” is one of the many translated works in modern Japan. This story was confirmed to have been used in several English language study books between 1898 and 1909. However, at present, research on study books that utilize Robinson Crusoe is almost non-existent. This study aims to analyze five works, including Toyofumi Matsuo's “Robinson Crusoe Literal Translation and Annotation”(1898). The purpose of this research is to investigate the translations of “Robinson Crusoe” that appeared in modern Japanese English study books and analyze their historical background. In Chapter 3, stylistic characteristics of the selected works are examined along with the history of education in the Meiji period. In Chapter 4, the background of each study book's creation is explored through an analysis of the translators' backgrounds and writing histories. Chapter 5 discusses how these study books were created using the original works and explores the motivations behind these adaptations. As a result, it was found that, over time, study books began to emphasize grammar rather than the translation and reading of stories. Additionally, translators, who were English teachers and scholars, created study books to compensate for their admiration for Western ideas and the lack of educational facilities. From the late 1900s onwards, the influence of Christian regulations is evident in the "diary" sections of the original work, while public demand shaped the "battle" scenes."
