천도재에서 관욕의 상징성과 수용 양상 (Symbolism and Accepting Patterns of Soul Cleansing in Cheondo Ritual)

초록

한국불교에서는 초파일 관욕(灌浴)을 제외하면 불상이나 산 자를 대상으로 한 관욕이 활성화되어 있지 않다. 이는 실제 물을 뿌리는 행위가 따르는 관욕이 드물다는 뜻이기도 하다. 이에 비해 상징적 씻김행위로서 천도재의 관념적ㆍ밀교적 관욕이 발달되어 있다. 이러한 관념적 관욕은 주로 하단의 망자를 대상으로 하며 상단과 중단의 관욕은 드물다. 따라서 ‘속(俗)의 존재를 대상으로 한 관욕’과 ‘성(聖)의 존재를 대상으로 한 관욕’을 각각 살펴보면서, 관욕의 상징성과 한국적 수용양상을 분석하였다.
사십구재를 통해 ‘俗의 존재를 대상으로 한 관욕’을 살펴보면, 관욕은 영가(靈駕)가 俗에서 聖으로 진입하는 전환점이 된다. 관욕으로 생전의 업을 씻어 청정해지고, 부처님 앞에 나갈 수 있는 존재가 되어 본격적인 가르침과 가피를 받게 되기 때문이다. 이때 영가가 俗의 존재에서 聖의 존재로 종교적 경지가 변화되었음을 나타내는 상징물은 ‘옷’이다. 관욕 때 지의(紙衣)를 태우는 것은 명의(冥衣)가 해탈복(解脫服)으로 바뀌었음을 뜻하고, 봉송 때 한복을 태우는 것은 망혼이 저승으로 통합되었음을 뜻한다.
‘聖의 존재를 대상으로 한 관욕’을 살펴보면, 욕불(浴佛)은 불교국가에서 일상적으로 행하는 의례로 우리나라에서도 석가의 일생과 관련된 재일(齋日)에 욕불이 널리 행해졌다. 이렇듯 한국의 욕불은 ‘석가탄신일의 탄생불’과 짝지어져 있는 반면, 이외의 불상관욕이나 탄생불이 아닌 불상을 대상으로 한 관욕은 일반화되어 있지 않다. 이에 비해 천도재에서 행하는 관념적 관욕은 일부 전승되고 있어 다른 나라와 전승양상에 차이를 드러내고 있다.
수륙재ㆍ영산재ㆍ생전예수재 등을 살펴보면, 의문(儀文)에서 상단ㆍ중단ㆍ하단의 관욕을 명시하고 있더라도 하단만을 대상으로 관욕하는 경우가 대부분이다. 뿐만 아니라 수용과정에서 상단ㆍ중단 관욕을 하지 않는 것에 대해 ‘중생이 부처님을 목욕시키는 것은 불경스러운 일’이라는 담론이 생겨나기도 하였다. 천도재에서 행하는 관욕은 곧 영가관욕이라는 인식이 보편화되어 있는 것이다.
불교에서 관욕이란 모든 존재에게 열려있는 것이며, 그 의미 또한 물로써 정화한다는 보편성에서 출발한다. 아울러 관욕은 씻어줌으로써 대상에게 공덕을 베푸는 것이라 보기 쉬우나, 행하는 이의 심신을 정화하는 공덕이 더 크다는 점이 중요하다. 따라서 영가관욕 중심의 인식에서 벗어나 관욕이 지닌 본래의 의미를 회복할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Soul cleansing ceremonies against the statue of Buddha or the living are not popular in Korean Buddhism except the ones for Buddha's Birthday. It means that soul cleansing ceremonies using actual water are hard to find. Inc comparison, idealogical and esoteric soul cleansing in Cheondo Ritual has been developed as symbolic cleasning. Such idealogical cleasning ceremonies are mainly for the dead at the bottom but not usual for the middle or the top. So I have analyzed the symbolism and accepting patterns of soul cleansing in Korea by exploring ‘soul cleansing against the mundane’ and ‘soul cleansing against the holy’.
Investigating ‘soul cleansing against the mundane’ through rituals for the dead on the 49th day after death, soul cleansing becomes a turning point for souls of the dead to enter the holy world from the mundane world. Soul cleansing makes their karma cleared and ready to stand in front of Buddha for his lessons and encouragement. At this moment, ‘clothes’ become a symbol for changes to the religious status of the soul from the mundane domain to the holy domain. Burning clothes during a soul cleansing ceremony indicates that the clothess of the dead become the clothes for nirvana and burning clothes during the coffin carrying means that the soul of the dead enters the other world.
Investigating ‘soul cleansing against the holy’, such ceremonies are popular in Buddhist countries and they are also popular here in Korea on the memorial days related to the life of Buddha. Thus, soul cleansing ceremonies in Korea are mainly coupled with ‘the statue of Buddha for his birthday’ but soul cleansing against subjects other than Buddha is not popular. However, idealogical soul cleansing ceremonies in Cheondo Ritual are partly succeeded showing differences compared to other Buddhist countries.
In rituals for the dead and the holy spirits, scripts for such rituals usually indicate the soul cleansing ceremonies for the bottom, the middle and the top altogether but the actual ceremonies are typically carried out for the bottom. There has been a discourse that it is impious for the living to cleanse Buddha as explanation for not serving soul cleansing against the middle and the top. It means that soul cleansing in Cheondo Ritual means ceremonies for the soul of the dead in general.
In Buddhism, soul cleansing is open to everyone and its meaning also derives from the universality of a purification activity using water. In addition, it may seem that soul cleansing is an activity to practice good deeds for others by cleaning but purifying cleaner’s body and mind through the ceremonies are more important. Thus, it is expected that the original meaning of soul cleansing can be restored by getting out of the perception of soul cleansing focusing on the soul of the dead.
