조선 후기 화엄칠처구회도(華嚴七處九會圖)의 양식 연구 (A Study on Styles of Chilcheoguhoedo Buddhist Pictures of the Avatamsaka Sutra in the Late Joseon)

초록

조선 후기 송광사·선암사·쌍계사, 그리고 통도사의 화엄칠처구회도는 한국불교사상과 불교미술사에서 주목할 만한 특징을 지니고 있다. 우선 화엄경이 차지하고 있는 사상적, 신앙적 가치는중국뿐만 아니라 한국불교사에서도 독보적이다. 화엄경변상도의 조성은 그 사상과 신앙에 대한 이해와 실천을 구체화시키는데 효과적이었다. 18 세기 후반과 19 세기 초반에 조성된 송광사·선암사·쌍계사, 그리고 통도사의 화엄칠처구회도는 한국화엄사상의 전래부터 조선 후기에 이르는 시기까지의 축적된 도상의 특징을 담고 있다. 특히 탄압과 소외를 받던 조선 후기 불교계에서 화엄경의 유통과 성행은 변상도의 조성을 촉진시키기도 하였다. 당시 조성된 화엄칠처구회도는 이전시기의 그것과 비교했을 때 그 구도와 형태, 그리고 색채나 필선·문양 등에서 뚜렷한 특징을 지니고있다. 18 세기 세 사찰의 화엄칠처구회도는 둥글면서 갸름한 인물 형태에 전통적인 담채기법을 채용하여 부드러운 느낌을 주는 색채 등은 앞 시기의 양식적 특징을 보이는 반면, 복잡한 구도 및 코발트계열의 청색·남색·분홍색·옥색 계열의 색채 구사와 더불어 가늘고 유연한 흰색 필선과 그물장식문양을 사용한 것이 특징이다. 반면 19 세기 통도사 화엄칠처구회도는 반원형 구도, 상·중·하 3 단의 배치 등은 불화의 규모가 소형화됨에 따라 일부 표현이 간략화 되는 한편, 내용은 더욱 복잡해지는 경향을 보인다. 이들 변상도는 그 시원인 돈황 막고굴의 변상도와 그 양식 면에서 좋은 비교가 될뿐만 아니라 한국불교미술사가 지닌 독자성과 가치를 발견할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의미가 크다.

영어초록

Chilcheoguhoedo Buddhist pictures of the Avatamsaka Sutra in Songgwangsa (1770),Seonamsa (1780), Ssanggyesa (1790), and Tongdosa (1811) in the late Joseon has remarkablecharacteristics in the Korean thought of Buddhism and Buddhist history. First, the "AvatamsakaSutra" occupies an ideological and religious value in the history of Buddhism not only in Chinabut also in Korea. The composition of the illustration of the Avatamsaka Sutra was effective inshaping the understanding and practice of its thoughts and beliefs. Chilcheoguhoedo Buddhistpictures of the Avatamsaka Sutra in Songgwangsa, Seonamsa, Ssanggyesa, and Tongdosa, whichwere composed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, featured the accumulated characteristicsof iconography from the time of the Korean thought of the Avatamsaka Sutra to the late Joseon.
In particular, the distribution and performance of "the Avatamsaka Sutra" in the late JoseonBuddhist world which was subject to oppression and alienation, also promoted the formation ofByeonsangdo. The Chilcheoguhoedo Buddhist pictures of the Avatamsaka Sutra, shaped at thetime, have distinctive characteristics in composition, form, color, Brushstrokes and patterns compared with those of the previous period. In Chilcheoguhoedo of three temples in the 18thcentury, by adopting the traditional coloring technique in the form of a round and slender figure,while the color that gives a soft feeling shows the stylistic characteristic of the previous period, itis characterized by using thin and flexible white lines and netting patterns along with the coloringof the light blue series as well as the complex composition and the cobalt blue series of blue,navy blue and pink. On the other hand, in Cholcheoguhoedo in the 19th century, thesemicircular composition, and arrangement of three phases of high-middle-low, etc., someexpression of the Buddhist paintings is simplified as the scale of the Buddhist paintings isreduced, while the contents tend to become more complicated. These Byeonsangdos are notonly a good comparison with Byeonsangdo of the origins of Duhaung Mogao Caves, but alsomeaningful in that they can discover the identity and value of Korea history of Buddhist art.
