초록

The functionalist approach to translation postulates that the skopos, or the goal of a translation assignment justifies the way that its translation product exists. This paper assumes that the intended function of a potential English translation of Nong-amjinjeok―a compilation of mostly letters written in Chinese characters of cursive form by Changhyeob Kim in the late 17th and early 18th centuries―is to faithfully show the contents and linguistic characteristics of the original. Namely, the translation is expected to perform a metatextual function. Based on such an understanding of the translation situation, this paper attempts to apply the functionalist source text (ST) analysis model propounded by Christiane Nord to the translation of Nong-amjinjeok. Since Nord's ST analysis model, which comprises 16 important factors of analysis, is more or less lengthy and tedious, only four factors deemed important for identifying translation problems and finding their solutions will be dealt with here.
