이수지 그림책에 관한 소고 - 프랑스 이론들을 참고한 검정과 흑백 페이지 분석 (A Reading of Lee Suzy’s picture book - Analysis of black and white pages with reference to French theories)

초록

이수지 작가의 그림책은 아동만을 대상으로 하지 않고 아동‘까지’ 대상으로 한 작품이라고 할 만큼 다양한 독자들의 상상력을 자극한다. 그런 점에서 심도 있는 읽기 가 필요한 작품이다. 이수지 작가의 작품은 일반적인 그림책과는 달리 검은색과 흑백 을 기조 색으로 삼고 있다는 점에서도 특별하다. 이 점에 착안하여 이미지, 책의 물성, 약간의 텍스트로 구성된 그의 작품에서 검은 페이지와 흰 페이지, 그리고 흑백이 라는 장치가 어떤 작용을 하는지를 분석할 수 있다. 이를 위해 우리에게 익숙한 프랑스 이론들을 참고하였다. 그의 데뷔작이며 추후 작품들의 원천으로 볼 수 있는 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』는 제목이 암시하듯 루이스 캐럴의 동명 소설에서 영감을 받은 작품이다. 캐럴의 작품에 서 주인공이 우연히 빨려 들어가게 되는 ‘이상한 나라’는 이수지의 작품에서 이미지 들의 기이한 조합과 변형을 통한 전도와 미자나빔의 혼돈의 세계로 재탄생한다. 여기 에서 검은 페이지들과 흰페이지들이 극장에서의 암전과 조명, 무대 프레임 역할을 하여 그러한 환영의 세계로 독자를 초대하는 동시에 그 환영으로부터 빠져나오고 작 품의 설정 자체에 의문을 갖게 한다.
『검은 새』는 큰 판형의 흑백 페이지들로 구성돼 있다. 검은색이 지배적이거나 흰 색이 지배적인 이 페이지들은 주인공인 소녀의 1인칭 텍스트와 함께 내면세계와 감 정적 깊이를 가시화한다. 특히 앞뒤면지와 서두와 마지막의 두 페이지는 수미상관을 이루며 이 작품의 선명한 흑백대비와 함께 상상의 내면 여행이라는 서사를 효과적으 로 전달하는데 이미지와 텍스트의 상호보완성이 이를 돕는다. 검은 새가 화면을 지배 하는 중간의 페이지들에서는 검은 선들이 겹쳐져 면이 되면서도 선으로 남아 있고 그에 따른 표면의 거친 질감이, 그리는 행위의 에너지를 온전히 전달하여 속도감과 역동성을 느끼게 한다. 중앙이 비어있거나 대상이 작게 표현되는 이례적인 페이지 구도는 독자의 상상 속에서 화면의 영역을 확장한다.
『그림자 놀이』는 실체와 그 반사상을 주요 모티프로 하고 있다. 앨리스가 통과했 던 거울의 앞과 뒤의 세계를 아래 위로 나란히 펼쳐 동시에 보여 주는 이 작품에서, 맞붙은 한 쌍의 상이한 두 세계가 두 가지 바탕색의 조합으로 표현된다. 이 작품은 불이 켜진, 실체와 그림자의 세계인 흰-검은 페이지에서 시작하여 서서히 환상적인 그림자의 세계인 노란-검은 페이지로 바뀌다가 마침내 불 꺼진, 그림자들만의 독립된 세계인 검은 페이지로 마무리된다. 이 과정 속에서 검은 페이지는 정적인 세계에서, 무한히 변신하는 그림자들로 가득 채워진 동적인 세계로 변모한다. 흑, 백, 노랑의 삼원 구도는 실체와 그림자, 조명과 어둠, 위와 아래 등의 위계가 해체될 수 있는 가 능성을 품고 있다.

영어초록

Lee Suzy’s picture books are not only for children, but also for children, stimulating the imagination of various readers. In that sense, it is a work that requires in-depth image reading. Unlike general picture books, Lee Suzy’s works are also special in that they use black and black and white as their primary colors. With this in mind, it is possible to analyze how the devices of black pages, white pages, and black and white act in her works, which consists of images, the materiality of book and a little text. For this, French theories, which are famil- iar to us, were referred to.
As it’s title suggests, Alice in Wonderland, which is her debut work and can be seen as the source of her later works, was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s novel of the same name. ‘Wonderland’ in Carol’s work, where Alice is accidentally sucked into, is reborn as a a world of chaos of ‘mise en abîme’ in Lee Suzy’s work. The black and white pages which serve as blackouts, lighting, and stage frames in the theater, invite the reader into the fantastic world and at the same time makes him escape from that illusion and question the setting of the work itself.
Black Bird is composed of large black-and-white pages. These pages, dominated by black or white, visualize the inner world and emotional depth along with the first-person text of the main character, a girl. In particular, the front and back pages, the introduction and the last two pages are correlated with each other, effectively delivering the narrative of an imagi- nary inner journey with the vivid black-and-white contrast of this work. And the com- plementarity of images and text helps with this. On the pages in the middle where a black bird dominates the page, black lines overlap and become a plane, but remain as a line, and the rough texture of the surface conveys the energy of the drawing action completely, givinga sense of speed and dynamism. The unusual page composition, in which the center is empty or the subject is expressed small, expands the area of the screen in the imagination of the reader.
Shadow has a substance and its reflection as its main motif. In this work, which simulta- neously unfolds the worlds in front and behind the mirror that Alice passed through, side by side, two different worlds facing each other are expressed by a combination of two back- ground colors. This work starts with a white-black page, lighted world of substance and shadows, and gradually changes to a yel- low-black page, a fantasy world of shadows, and finally ends with a black page, unlit, in- dependent world of shadows. In this process, the black page transforms from a static world into a dynamic world filled with infinitely trans- forming shadows. The three-way composition of black, white, and yellow shows through everyday play that the hierarchy of substance and shadow, light and darkness, and top and bottom can be reversed.
