조선 후기 策題와 출제 경향에 관한 일고찰- 肅宗∼正祖 시기를 중심으로 - (A Study on Chek Jae and Examination Question Trends in Late Joseon Dynasty Focusing on Periods from King Suk Jong to King Jeong Jo Times)

초록

본고는 숙종 대부터 정조 대까지 출제된 策題 가운데 당대 학술과 관련된 策題를 대상으로 각 시기별 策題의 출제 경향성과 그 의미를 규명하고자 하였다.
조선 후기에는 주자학 일변도의 흐름 가운데 학술과 문체의 다양화가 이루어짐으로써 주자학 중심의 통치이념과 세계관이 동요되었다. 正祖代에 이르러 학술적인 측면이나 문체적인 측면에서 이러한 양상이 뚜렷하게 나타나고 正祖를 중심으로 주자학 중심의 통치이념과 세계관을 공고히 하고자 하는 대응책이 마련되었다. 그러나 이러한 변화의 흐름과 국가적 차원에서의 문제인식과 그에 대한 대응은 肅宗․英祖代부터 이미 시작되었으며, 이러한 변화 양상은 당대 策題에서도 그 일면을 확인할 수 있다.
앞서 살펴본 당대 학술과 관련하여 肅宗․英祖代에 출제된 策題는 理氣心性과 人物性同異에 대한 논의, 朱子의 존숭과 朱子書에 대한 시각, 儒家諸書의 조명과 재 탐구로 분류할 수 있다. 일례로 金昌協이 試官으로 있을 때 출제한 「辯理氣」는 실제 策題에 서술된 내용을 통해 策題를 출제한 의도와 목적을 구체적으로 파악할 수 있었으며, 이러한 策題가 출제되었던 배경은 四端七情論爭, 人心道心論爭과 함께 조선 시대의 3대 논쟁으로 일컬어지는 人物性同理論에 대한 논쟁이 본격화되었던 당대의 학술의 흐름과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다. 주자의 존숭과 주자서에 대한 의미부여를 담은 尹鳳朝의 「朱子諸書」와 儒家諸書를 조명하고 재탐구해야할 필요성을 제기한 林象德의 「傳註之作」 역시 당대 학술에서 주요 쟁점이 되었던 사안을 그대로 반영하고 있다.
다음으로 正祖代에 출제된 策題는 명말 청초 학술에 대한 비판, 주자학의 정통성과 가치 재확립, 당대 문장의 典範 제시로 분류할 수 있다. 일례로 정조 15년(1791)에 抄啓文臣과 성균관 유생들을 대상으로 정조가 출제한 「俗學」은 정통 性理學을 벗어난 양명학, 고증학, 학자들의 학설, 문장에서 蟲刻鷄距함을 추구하는 七子五子之派의 문장 등 당대 문인들 사이에서 풍조를 이루고 있는 명말 청초 학술에 대한 정조의 비판적 입장이 담겨 있는 대표적인 策題로, 정조는 이와 같은 策題의 출제를 통해 정통 朱子學으로의 회귀를 강구하였다. 到記儒生과 抄啓文臣을 대상으로 출제한 「心」에서도 주자의 해석과 正說을 第一義로 여기고 우위에 둠으로써 朱子學이 공격받는 당대 학술 경향 속에서 朱子學의 정통성을 회복하고 그 가치를 재확립하고자 하는 정조의 적극적인 의도를 반영하고 있다.

영어초록

questions of each period’s Chek Jae (策題) among Chek Jae associated with academic fields of the time from the period from King Suk Jong to King Jeong Jo times and to identify their meanings. In the late Joseon Dynasty, academic field and style of writing diversified from the focus on doctrines of Zhu Xi. This agitated the view of the world and ruling principles centering on philosophies of Zhu Xi. Such tendency emerged clearly in academic or writing-style aspects during the King Jeong Jo times. King Jeong Jo arranged countermeasures to solidify the view of the world and ruling principles centering on philosophies of Zhu Xi. However, state-level awareness on such tendency and countermeasures against it already started from the times of King Suk Jong and King Yeong Jo. Such tendency also appeared on the Chek Jae of the times.
Regarding academic fields of the times, Chek Jae questions during the times of King Suk Jong and King Yeong Jo were divided into discussion on Li-Qi Philosophy and Human and Non-Human Nature Philosophy, view on Reverence of Zhu Xi (朱子) and Zhu Xi Literature(朱子書), and spotlight and re-exploration on Confucian writings (儒家諸書). In case of [Byeo Li Qi (辯理氣)] set when Kim Chang Hyeop (金昌協) was serving as the official, contents described in the actual Chek Jae stated the intention and purpose of Chek Jae in details. The background of such Chek Jae was closely related to the academic trend of the time when the controversy on Human and Non-Human Nature Philosophy actively took place. Such controversy was regarded as one of Joseon Dynasty’s three main discussions including controversies on 4 instincts and 7 emotions (四端七情論爭) and on human mind and moral mind (人心道心論爭). In addition, [Ju Ja Jae Seo (朱子諸書)] by Yun Bong Jo (尹鳳朝) stated reverence of Zhu Xi and significance of Zhu Xi literature while [Jeon Ju Ji Jak (傳註之作)] by In Sang Deok (林象德) pointed out the need for re- spotlight and re-exploration on Confucian writings (儒家諸書). Both Ju Ja Jae Seo (朱子諸書) and Jeon Ju Ji Jak (傳註之作) reflected controversial matters in the academic field of the times. In addition, Chek Jae (策題) during the King Jeong Jo times was divided into criticism on academic literatures of the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, traditionality of Zhu Xi philosophies and re-establishment of its value, and suggestion of exemplary writing system of the times. For instance, [Sok Hak (俗學)] set by King Jeong Jo for civil officials (抄啓文臣) and Sungkyunkwan students in the 15th year of King Jeong Jo (1791) was a representative Chek Jae (策題) which showed King Jeong Jo’s critical view on the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty’s academic literatures such as Yang Ming’s Philosophy deviating from the traditional Neo-Confucianism, Philology, theories of scholars, and Chilja and Ohja (七子五子之派) writing system that were trending among scholars of the times. King Jeong Jo set such Chek Jae to return to the traditional Zhu Zi philosophies. [Sim (心)] set for Confucianists qualified for civil service examination. Civil officials (抄啓文臣) also reflected King Jeong Jo’s intentions of regarding Zhu Xi interpretations and theories as the primary principle and putting the priority to recover the traditionality of Zhu Xi philosophies and re-establish the values under academic trends of criticizing Zhu Xi philosophies.
