율곡의 「천도책」에 담긴 천문 기상에 관한 인식과 재이관 고찰 (A Study on the Perception of about Astronomy and Meteorology, and the View of Disaster Focused on Yulgok’s 「Policy strategy」)

초록

이 글은 율곡(栗谷) 이이(李珥)의 장원급제 책문인 「천도책(天道策)」을 중심으로 천문 기상에 관한 그의 인식과 재이관을 고찰한 논문이다. 「천도책」에는 율곡이 천문과 기상 현상들을 성리학의 인식론인 격물(格物)로서 탐구하고, 천도 현상을 리기, 음양, 오행 이론과 해박한 역사적 지식과 식견을 논술한 내용이 담겼다. 이로써 그는 사연사물의 원리와 만상(萬象)의 기(氣)를 설명하고, 물질세계의 근원과 현상의 배후를 논하였다.
「천도책」에 담긴 율곡의 천문·기상과 재이에 관한 주요 인식은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 천도의 근원은 리(理)이고, 만상의 차이는 기(氣)이다. 기는 정기와 괴기가 있으며, 리는 항상성과 변칙성이 있다. 정기와 괴기는 천도뿐만 아니라 인사와의 감응으로도 타난다. 둘째, 박식(薄蝕) 가운데 일식은 재이이고, 월식은 재이가 아니라고 보았다. 해는 양정(陽精)이며, 달은 음정(陰精)으로 그 운행속도의 차이가 생긴다. 상서롭거나 상서롭지 못한 별은 치세(治世)의 결과를 반영한다. 사람은 천도의 마음이다. 만물의 정(精)이 다해 죽으면 하늘의 별이 되지 않으니, 이는 기의 취산에 방소가 없기 때문이다. 셋째, 바람의 기는 방위에 구속되지 않는다. 오색구름은 각각 서로 다른 재이를 상징한다. 안개는 음기가 막힌 것으로 전란과 재앙을 상징하기도 한다. 천둥과 번개는 양기가 음기에 쌓여 나오지 못하고 부딪쳐 만들어진다. 밀운불우(密雲不雨)는 위·아래가 사귀지 못해 생긴다. 초목과 눈꽃 잎의 수가 다름은 모두 자연일 뿐이다. 우박은 음기가 양기를 위협할 때 사물을 해친다. 넷째, 중국역사에서 재이는 군주의 치세와 관련성이 많았다. 이에 율곡은 우순(虞舜) 시대부터 상(商)·주(周)·춘추(春秋)·한(漢)·신(新)·당(唐)·송(宋)의 시대와 무왕(武王)·주공(周公)·공자(孔子)·왕망(王莽)·무측천(武則天)·안진경(顏眞卿)·문산(文山) 등을 비롯한 다양한 인물들의 천문·기상 관련 재이의 역사적 사례를 설명하였다. 이로써 군주의 정치적 책임과 적재(積財)·적덕(積德)의 실천이 중요하고, 왕도정치가 만물 화육의 토대임을 강조하였다.
종합하면, 「천도책」은 천문과 기상 현상을 천도로 보고, 만상인 자연현상의 기와 이치를 논한 책문이다. 여기에는 16세기 조선의 학자뿐만 아니라 중국학자들도 우러러 인정한 율곡의 천문·기상관과 재이관이 담겨 있다. 이처럼 자연과학의 현상을 철학적으로 해석하거나 재이관의 설명은 현대의 자연과학 이론과 많은 차이점이 있다. 그렇지만 「천도책」이 16세기 과거의 책문이고, 당시의 격물의 이치를 해명한 성리학 사상과 정치사상을 일목요연하게 파악할 수 있다는 점에서 학술적 의미가 있음도 분명하다고 하겠다.

영어초록

In this paper, I explained Yulgok(栗谷) Yi I(李珥, 1536~1584)’s the perception and the View of Disaster on Astronomy and Meterology, focusing on his 「Policy strategy(天道策)」. Yulgok explored astronomical and meteorological ‘phenomena as investigation and research of things’, the epistemology of Neo-Confucianism, and discussed various celestial phenomena based on Li Qi, Yin and Yang, the five elementary substance, and historical knowledge. Furthermore, he explained the principle of natural objects and the Qi(氣) of the all manifestations of nature, and revealed the source and behind the phenomena of the material world.
The main contents of the 「Policy strategy」 on Astronomy and Meterology and Catastrophic are as follows. First, the origin of natural law is Li(理), and the difference between all manifestations of nature is the action of Qi. Li has the Constancy of upright Qi and the Variability of obedient Qi, upright Qi and obedient Qi appear according to the interaction of between the Natural law and ‘human affairs’. Second, among the thin etchings, the solar eclipse is the Disaster, and the lunar eclipse is not the Disaster. The sun is Yang essence(陽精) and the moon is Yin essence(陰精), and their operating speeds are different. An auspicious star and unauspicious stars appear according to the situation of monarch‘s reign such as the times of peace and prosperity and turbulent age. The Man is the heart of the Natural law. When the Essence of all things on earth dies, it does not become a star in the sky. This is because there is no space and location in Qi’s Gather and Disperse. Third, the wind is not bound by direction. The five-colored clouds represent the different disaster. Fog is with a lack of Yin Qi, it represents war and catastrophe. Thunder and lightning are made by hitting the atmosphere without being able to come out. Cirrus spissatus without rain is caused by the inability of the top and bottom to date. The difference in the number of vegetation and snowflake leaves is all nature. The hail harms things when Yin Qi threatens Yang Qi. Fourth, in Chinese history, the Disaster had a lot to do with the monarch's reign. In response, Yulgok discussed historical examples of the age of China's the era of Yu Shun(虞舜), Shang Dynasty, Zhou Dynasty, Chun qiu, Han Dynasty, Xin Dynasty and Tang Dynasty, and King Wu, Duke of Zhou, Confucius, Wang Mang, Wu Zetian, as well as historical figures of the relocation of astronomical weather. He also emphasized that the political responsibility of the monarch and the practice of Accumulate wealth, Accumulate virtue, and Wangdao Politics are the basis of Nature's nurture of all things on earth.
In sum, 「Policy strategy」 is a countermeasure that expresses astronomical and meteorological phenomena as the natural law and discusses the principles of Qi and Li of the all manifestations of nature as the natural phenomenon. Chinese scholars as well as Joseon scholars in the 16th century affirmed Yulgok's astronomy and meteorological and the View of Disaster. There is no need to compare and understand Yulgok's philosophical the View of Disaster and natural science from the same perspective as the theory of modern natural science. In particular, Yulgok explained the theory of the theory of studying the nature of things in Neo-Confucianism with the name of 「Policy strategy」 at the civil service examinations. It can be said that this has great academic significance in that it includes the core contents of Yulgok's political ideology.
