초록

In the late 17th century, anti-Ching sentiment (resistance against Ching dynasty) spread in the Chosun dynasty, which advocated "boksuseolchi(復讎雪恥-taking revenge and returning the humiliation)". King Hyo Jong, who took the throne when such anti-Ching sentiment was pervasive in the society promoted "bukbeol(conquering the north)" policy through military expansion.In order to promote the "bukbeol" plans, Hyo Jong needed an expert on military affairs who could proactively support his policies, and this was why Hyeok Yeon Yu was selected.
Hyeok Yeon Yu was appointed at various important posts in military and political affairs, marking distinguished achievements since he became a government official after passing the military service examination in 1644 when King In Jo was in throne. He gained special confidence from Kin Hyo Jong, and played the major role in military buildup policies which were major issues in "bukbeol' project at that time.
In 1655, the 6th year of King Hyo Jong, Hyeok Yeon Yu showed excellent insight as a military strategist by claiming the importance of building "Anheunghaejin(安興海鎭-military post in Anheung sea) as a refuge place to provide against contingencies. In 1658, the 9th year of King Hyo Jong, he expanded cavalry soldiers at "uryeongcheong(military unit)" to establish "byeolmadae(別馬隊)".
Hyeok Yeon Yu became a conspicuous figure during the process of promoting "bukbeol", and was appointed at major military positions even after the era of King Hyeon Jong Jo, striving at strengthening the national defense.
In addition, he devised measures to procure sulfur, the raw material of gunpowder, and also gave extra rifles to training troops which he founded, and sought ways to tighten discipline in local troops. Furthermore, in the 5th year of King Suk Jong, he built freight cars and introduced them to large scale "Yeolmushik(閱武式-a ceremony where the King meets the military troops). Thus, he was a perfect military leader in every way.
In the meantime, "Namin(南人)" people who took power in the political arena in the early years of King Suk Jong after the "Gapinyesong" incident tried even harder to gain military power for the stabilization of politics. However, Heo Jeok who wanted to give all the military power to "Namin" people caused opposition from King Suk Jong and the people of Seok Ju Kim and "Seoin(西人)" people.
In this period when the government felt threatened by the changes in the political situations in China, Hyeok Yeon Yu built the "Daeheungsanseong(fortress castle)" in Songdo, where topography was similar to Gangwhado and Namhan fortress, to prepare against contingencies. Since no permission is required to mobilize troops here, incidents occurred including when Ichoen mobilized military troops. Because of this incident, Hyeok Yeon was accused of treason and was sentenced to death by the King.Eventually, the actual reason that Hyeok Yeon Yu had to die was because he was at the center of military power, at a time when "Seoins" and "Namins" were fighting over military power.
Hyeok Yeon Yu had "bukbeol(conquering north)" as the ultimate goal of his life, always worrying about the national security, practicing appropriate military buildup measures, while having the actual power over the military forces. However, he was destined to be the target of political enemies since he was the most important person in the power struggle.
In the end, after the era of King Hyo Jong Jo, Hyeok Yeon Yu, who devoted himself to strengthen military power, along with the discussion of 'bukbeol" was sacrificed by the power struggle to obtain the military power against his will.
