포스트모던 그림책의 미장아빔(Mise-en-Abyme)－나의 빨강책과 시간상자를 중심으로 (Mise-en-Abyme in Postmodern Picturebooks －Focusing on The Red Book and Flotsam)

초록

본고에서 다루는 바바라 리먼의 「나의 빨강책」과 데이비드 위스너의 「시간상자」는 현재 아동문학에서 일어나고 있는 근본적인 변화가 디지털 세계의 연결성,상호성, 접근성의 반영이라는 점을 대변하고 있는 포스트모던 그림책이다. 1990년대 초기부터 선보이기 시작하는 그림책의 포스트모더니즘 경향들은 상호텍스트성,연행, 불확정성, 놀이성을 추구하는 것으로 감지된다. 인터넷과 모바일 기기를 통해 가능해진 상시접속사회의 모습이 축도된 그림책 콘텐츠를 구축하기 위해 이 두그림책 작가가 적극 수용한 방식이 미장아빔이다. 이미 문학, 회화, 사진, 영화 등에서 다각도로 활용된 바 있는 미장아빔은 포스트모던 그림책에서 커다란 실제 책안에 작은 책 그림을 이용하거나, 사진 속의 사진 등을 이용하는 방식으로 전유되었다. 인터넷 공간에서의 하이퍼텍스트 링크처럼 그림책 지면 활용의 새 지평을열어준 미장아빔으로 말미암아, 이제 그림책의 비주얼텍스트는 투과적이고 역동적으로 진화하고 있다. 컴퓨터나 모바일 기기들에 한결 친숙한 디지털 네이티브 세대의 독자들은 책 속의 책 혹은 사진 속의 사진을 매개로 그림책 스토리의 세계로들어갈 수 있고, 반면 책 속의 인물들과 스토리 요소들도 책 밖으로 나와 독자의공간으로 들어가게 된 것이다.
본고에서는 먼저 다중적 층위의 공간을 조작하는 미장아빔의 문학적, 미술사적, 영상예술적 기원과 사례들을 소개하였다. 그런 후에 바바라 리먼의 「나의 빨강책」과 데이비드 위스너의 「시간 상자」에서 선택된 미장아빔의 장치들인 책과 카메라와 사진이 어떤 방식으로 그림책 콘텐츠의 공간을 확장시키고, 어떻게 독자를 공동창작자로 의미생산에 초대하는지 그 양상을 살펴보았다.
현대의 그림책은 급변하는 미디어 환경에 가장 빠르게 변모해가는 적응력을보여주는 매체이다. 본고에서 집중적으로 살펴본 미장아빔은 디지털 매체의 특징인 다성성과 상호주관성을 환기시키는 메타픽션의 장치이며, 디지털 매체의 비선형적이고 비계열적 특징들을 반영하고 있는 ‘자유자재의 하이퍼텍스트(handheld hypertext)’이다. 일찍이 디지털 매체학의 선구자 빌렘 플루서가 언급한 디지털 혁명은 곧 그림의 혁명이고, 멀티미디어 전자책으로 진화해가는 종이 그림책의 밝은미래는 다양한 급진적 시도를 통해 진부함을 스스로 전복하는 그림책의 혁명을 통해 가능하겠다.

Babara Lehman’s The Red Book and David Wiesner’s Flotsam are the postmodern picturebooks representing the features such as connectivity,reciprocality, and accessibility of the digital world reflectively in the recent radical changes within the children’s literature. The disposition toward postmodernism in picturebooks which appeared in the early 1990s is perceived to have pursued the inter-textuality, dramatization, uncertainty, and playfulness.
These two picturebook artists accepted critically the method of ‘mise-en-abyme’in order to forge the picturebook contents implying the miniatured environment of ‘always on society’ by means of internet and mobile devices. ‘Mise-en-abyme’which has already availed itself diversely in the field of the literature, paintings,photographs, and the film arts has been exploited in the postmodern picturebooks by using the diminished little books in the ‘real’ big book or using the reflective picture images in the framed bigger pictures. Now the visual text images in the picturebooks have evolved as the penetrable and dynamic ones owing to the methods of ‘mise-en-abyme’ which opened up the new horizon in the way of the usages of picturebook paper surface spaces similar to the hypertext links in internet cyber space. They enabled he digital native generation readers who are much more familiar with the computer and mobile devices to get into the story world of picturebooks through the medium of the ‘books in the books’ or ‘pictures in the pictures’. On the contrary, thecharacter in the picturebooks and the elements of story are possible to come out into the readers’ real world. In this paper, the historical background and various cases of ‘mise-en-abyme’ which manipulates the multiple layers of spaces in the area of the literature, modern arts, photography arts and movies are introduced, firstly. Then, the aspects are reviewed closely in what manners the inner books, camera and pictures contribute to expand the content spaces in the picturebook and how these ‘mise-en-abyme’ method invite the readers as the co-producers of the semantic analysis in the adopted Lehman’s The Red Book and Wiesner’s Flotsam respectively.
Picturebooks of today are the media showing off their high adaptability in the rapid changed media environment. The intensively surveyed ‘mise-en-abyme’in this paper is a meta-fiction device to arouse the multiphony and the mutual subjectivity attributes of digital media. In addition, it is a handheld hypertext implied those of non-lineal and non-affiliated characteristics. Vilem Flűsser, the pioneer of digital media phenomenology once urged that the digital revolution is the revolution of the pictures. Now anybody can forecast the bright future of paper picturebooks is possible only through the picturebook revolution by attempting the incessant radical trials of subverting the hackneyed qualities of the genre conventions.
