초록

절대 전제 왕조국가에서 동아시아 국가들의 관계는 책봉체제로 설명되며, 그 중심에 책서가 있다. 주변 국가의 입장에서 책서를 받는다는 것은 중국과의 외교적 관계가 형성되었음을 의미한다. 책봉체제는 단순히 외교적 수단을 넘어서 동아시아 지역 내에서 정치적･문화적 제도를 공유하고 발전시키는 중요한 기제로 작용했다. 책봉과 책서를 통해 동아시아의 국제 관계는 단순한 힘의 논리를 넘어 제도적･문화적 상호작용의 기반을 형성하였다. 특히 주변국들은 책봉체제 속에서 자국의 정통성을 인정받는 동시에, 내부 통치체제를 안정시키는 계기도 되었다.
책서는 국가 간의 관계를 규정하는 문서에 그치지 않고 수신국 내부에서도 왕비, 세자, 공･후, 고위 대신 등을 책립 및 임명하는 문서로도 활용되었다. 그래서 중국으로부터 받은 책서는 수신국의 책서 제도와 문서 양식에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 대중국 관계에서 책은 삼국 시대부터 시작되었다. 『삼국사기』에 의하면, 위진남북조 시대의 동진-백제, 양-백제, 유송-백제, 당대의 당-고구려, 당-백제, 당-신라가 책봉-피책봉 관계를 맺고 있었다. 그리고 고려는 중국 왕조의 극심한 변천에 해당하는 시기로 중국의 5대 10국, 송, 요, 금, 원, 명 등과 관계를 맺을 수밖에 없었다. 조선은 명청과의 책봉-피책봉 관계를 형성하였고, 이들 중국 왕조국가로부터 책봉을 받는 과정에서 책문도 함께 수령하였다.
역사적으로 볼 때, 당은 삼국과 통일신라에 영향을 주었고, 송과 원은 고려에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 그런 점에서 당송 시대의 책서 제도와 원대의 책서는 신라와 고려의 책서에 많은 영향을 주었다. 특히 원 지배기는 당시 정치 및 사회의 모든 제도에 변화를 가져왔으며, 종전에 고려가 자주국으로서 지니고 있던 지위는 사라졌고, 문서의 종류, 격식, 용어 등에도 많은 변화를 초래하였다. 이후 공민왕 때 이를 개혁하려는 움직임이 있었으나, 명의 건국과 조선 건국이라는 동아시아 관계의 새로운 질서 재편성으로 이어졌다.

The investiture system defined the relationships among autocratic states in East Asia, with the Chinese emperor conferring titles upon neighboring rulers to establish a hierarchical diplomatic order. At the core of this system were investiture books (冊書), important diplomatic documents that formalized mutual recognition between states. One state would request recognition through documents such as zhangzuo (章奏), and the other state would approve it by sending an investiture book along with imperial edicts such as zhoushu (詔書) or chishu (勅書). Upon receiving these documents, the recipient state expressed gratitude by sending a biaowen (表文) to the suzerain state and implemented amnesties domestically to strengthen its ruling legitimacy. These documents were more than just formal acknowledgments; they were vital tools for reinforcing political authority, consolidating power, and maintaining peace between neighboring states.
This study explores the origins, use, and significance of investiture books in Korea, from the Three Kingdoms period to the Goryeo Dynasty. By examining their historical context, it analyzes their practical functions, ceremonial roles, and symbolic value, while emphasizing the political and cultural importance of investiture books in East Asia. The study also discusses how Korea uniquely adapted this diplomatic tradition, incorporating its own interpretations and practices into the system. It highlights the localized adaptations that allowed Korea to use investiture books not only for formal diplomacy but also to assert and legitimize the power of the ruling dynasty.
The use of investiture books in Korea began during the Three Kingdoms period, as recorded in Samguksagi and Goryeosa. These books were made of materials like jade and bamboo and were used for purposes such as investiture, mourning, posthumous honors, and ceremonial titles. Unlike in China, where investiture books were primarily used to formalize the status of officials, in Korea, these books were often used as diplomatic tools to affirm a ruler's authority and maintain regional influence. This shows how Korea localized the system it received from China, adapting it to its own political structure and needs.

Externally, they communicated the recognition of authority from one state to another, while internally, they were employed to justify and consolidate the power of the ruler. This system greatly influenced Korea's documentary traditions and political culture, playing a vital role in both international diplomacy and domestic governance, shaping Korea’s diplomatic strategies, its political narrative, and its approach to statecraft throughout its history.
