불교미술 전시의 대중화 방안 연구－영월 창령사 터 나한상 전시를 중심으로－ (Popularizing Buddhist Art Exhibitions－With a Focus on the Exhibition of the Five Hundred Arhats of Changnyeongsa Temple Site in Yeongwol－)

초록

이 글에서는 국립박물관과 불교박물관들이 개최한 불교미술 전시현황을 정리하고, 대중화에 성공했던 전시 사례로서 ‘창령사 터 나한상 전시’를 분석하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 불교미술 전시의 대중화 방안을 제안하였다.
국립중앙박물관의 불교미술 전시는 1990년대 기획전시의 공간이 확보되고 큐레이터들의 역량이 성장한 이후 학술적으로 깊이 있는 불교미술 전시를 개최할 수 있었다. 2005년 용산 이전ㆍ개관을 기점으로 특별전시 운영시스템을 구축하여 국립박물관의 학예 연구 역량과 국제적인 위상을 드러내는 불교미술 전시들이 개최되었으며 최근에는 기존 전시 형식을 탈피하는 기획을 통해 일반인들의 관심을 모았다.
한편, 불교박물관의 불교미술 전시는 사찰의 성보박물관과 불교중앙박물관을 중심으로 이루어지고 있다. 종교적 위상과 고승 대덕의 업적, 그리고 사찰의 역사와 전통을 강조하고 있다.
‘창령사 터 나한상 전시’는 심오한 종교적 의미를 지닌 나한상을 설치 작품으로 재탄생시켜 관람객이 불교미술에 빠져들고 사색에 잠길 수 있게 하였다. 다양한 전시연계 프로그램의 운영과 SNS를 통한 홍보 역시 전시 대중화에 기여하였다.
나한상 전시 분석을 바탕으로 불교미술 전시의 대중화 방안을 다음과 같이 제안하였다. 첫째, 전시 주제를 확대할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 전시연출의 변화를 시도해야 한다. 셋째, 새로운 디지털 매체를 활용해야 한다. 넷째, 도록을 다양화해야 한다. 다섯째, 연계 교육 프로그램을 개발하고 운영해야 한다. 여섯째, 다양한 전시행사를 기획해야 한다. 일곱째, 불교미술의 콘텐츠가 지닌 개성과 역사성을 반영한 ‘캐릭터’를 개발하여 보급할 필요가 있다.

This paper compiled information on the Buddhist hart exhibitions hosted by national museums and Buddhist museums, analyzed the “Five Hundred Arhats of Changnyeongsa Temple Site Exhibition” as a successful case of popularizing Buddhist art, and presented methods of popularizing Buddhist art exhibitions based on the analysis.
The National Museum of Korea was able to hold more in-depth Buddhist art exhibitions after the space for special exhibitions was secured, and the capacity of curators was enhanced in the 1990s. An operating system for special exhibitions was established soon after the museum relocated and reopened in Yongsan in 2005, which led to the hosting of Buddhist art exhibitions that showcased the curatorial research capacity and international status of the National Museum. More recently, exhibitions that broke away from existing formats garnered the interest of the general public.
Buddhist art exhibitions in Buddhist museums are mainly hosted by the Seongbo Museums in temples and the Central Buddhist Museum. The exhibitions emphasize the religious status, the accomplishments of revered monks, as well as the history and traditions of the temples.
The “Five Hundred Arhats of Changnyeongsa Temple Site Exhibition” recreated the arhat statues with profound religious significance as installation works, allowing the viewers to immerse themselves in Buddhist art and enter spiritual contemplation. Various programs related to the exhibition, as well as the promotional campaign via social network services, contributed to the exhibition’s popularity.
This study suggested the following methods to popularize Buddhist art exhibitions based on an analysis of the Arhats Exhibition. First, the exhibition themes should be expanded. Second, more changes should be attempted in the programming of the exhibitions. Third, new digital media should be used. Fourth, art brochures should be diversified. Fifth, educational programs related to the exhibitions should be developed and managed. Sixth, various exhibitions-related events should be planned. Seventh, characters that reflect the characteristics and historic nature of Buddhist art content should be developed and distributed.
