초록

본 연구는 農巖 金昌協(1651~1708)의 작품 가운데 「亡兒初朞祭文」을 분석하고 그 미감의 특성을 파악하여 기존 연구에서 부각되지 않은 미감적 특성을 파악하는 것을 목표하였다. 그 과정에서 다음 사항이 검토되었다.
기존 연구에서는 작품론 구성에 있어, 죽음에 대한 문제를 다루었다는 이유로 墓誌銘과 祭文을 엄격히 구분하여 분석하지 않는 경향이 있었다. 그러나 이 두 갈래는 수용자가 각각 달라짐에 따라 작품이 발산하는 정서적 효과가 확연히 달라짐을 알 수 있었다. 즉 묘지명의 경우 1차적 수용자가 불특정한 제3자인 반면 제문의 경우 1차적 수용자가 제문의 대상인 亡者이다. 특히 亡者가 다른 사람이 아니라 저자의 자식인 경우, 感情의 流露가 직접적으로 드러나는 경우가 허다할 수밖에 없으며 작품은 구구절절 써내려가게 되어 편폭이 길어지는 경향이 생길 수밖에 없다. 때문에 제문에서는, 감정을 극도로 절제하고 언어를 지극히 경제적으로 구사했던 농암의 다른 작품들과는 판이한 양상이 나타날 수밖에 없는 것이다.
「亡兒初朞祭文」은 아들이 죽은 지 1년이 되었을 때의 작품으로, 격정적 슬픔 뒤에 찾아드는, 잦아진 슬픔이 우리의 日常을 어떻게 장악하는지를 교묘한 반복을 통해 성공적으로 보여주었다. 즉, 반복되는 일상의 내용에는 변함이 없으나 사랑하는 사람의 存在와 不在로 같은 내용의 일상이 가지게 되는 큰 폭의 의미변화와 그로 인해 유발되는 감정의 변주를 잘 드러내주고 있으며, 또 일상의 의미변화 이후 그 일상을 견디며 꾸역꾸역 버텨나가는 한 인간의 모습을 애처롭게 그리고 있다. 이 작품은 일상을 버텨나가는 실존적 상황을 그려내고 있다는 면에서 오늘날 이별을 겪은 후 일상을 어렵게 감내해 나가는 이라면 누구라도 공감할 수 있는 면모를 지니고 있다. 이는 바로 이별을 경험한 우리 일상의 한 모습이기도 하기 때문이다.
이 작품은 특히 묘지명 등에서 나타나는 簡嚴의 美와는 다른 요소가 작품의 정서를 지배한다고 할 수 있다. 작품은 상세한 반복을 곳곳에 배치하여 亡者와 가졌던 삶의 일상들을 따라갈 수 있게 하였으며, 그 일상들이 현재도 계속되며 그것이 슬픔이 되는 까닭을 문학적 장치를 통해 잘 드러내주고 있다. 때문에 작품의 편폭은 격정적 슬픔을 쏟아낸 초기의 제문에 비해 다소 길어지고 있다. 농암은 세월이 더 지나 감정 정리가 더 된 뒤에는 「祭亡兒墓文」에서 조목조목 자신의 슬픔을 이야기하며 제문에서는 보기 드문 장문의 글까지 짓게 된다. 이는 농암 자신이 말한 바대로 感情의 솔직한 流露가 빗어낸 결과물인 것이다.

영어초록

This study is designed to examine the characteristics of the esthetic sense of the “Ceremonial Writing at the First Rites to Allay the Son” by Kim Chang-hyeop (whose pen name was Nongam) and figure out other esthetic characteristics than was highlighted in other studies. And in the process, the following has been studied.
Existing studies tended to neglect to distinguish epitaphs from ceremonial writings in analysis because they both treated the issue of death. But these two genres do differ in the emotional effect they evoke depending on recipients. While the primary recipient is an unspecified third party in an epitaph, it is the dead as the addressee in a ceremonial writing. Especially when the dead person is the writer’s child, frequently the emotional tracks reveal themselves and, since the writer writes a lengthy and detailed piece, the length of the written fragment necessarily tends to get protracted. For this reason, Kim Chang-hyeop’s ceremonial writing is bound to show aspects quite different from those found in his other writings where emotions are restrained and language demonstrates extreme economy.
“Ceremonial Writing at the First Rites to Allay the Son” was written when the son had been dead for a year, which successfully shows through its distinctive repetition how the frequently occurring sorrows after the impetuous grief control our daily life. To be specific, while the writing depicts the large width of change in the meaning of everyday life due to the presence or absence of the loved one despite the unvaried content of the repetitive quotidian, and the emotional variations thereby, it tenderly describes how a person sluggishly moves on with his daily life after the change in its meaning. This specific piece has the aspect that anyone who plods on through the difficult quotidian following experience of a separation can sympathize with, in that it describes the existential situation of coping with the quotidian life. And it is the look of our everyday life after we have experienced parting.
It may be said that the emotional state of the writing is dominated by an element different than the beauty of concise rigor shown in epitaphs among others. The writing places repeated details throughout the piece, enabling the reader follow the everyday life shared with the dead son, while it shows through literary devices how it still continues and constitutes sadness. Therefore, the piece is a bit longer compared to the earlier ceremonial writings in which the writer unlocks an outpouring gush of impetuous grief. Nongam, the writer, gets to write a rarely long piece, detailing his sorrows in the “Ceremonial Writing at the First Rites to Allay the Son” done when his emotions are more under control with passage of time. This should be the product of his honest emotional tracks in the writer’s own words.
