퇴계의 자기수양과 참 공부 (Toegye's Self-discipline and True Study)

초록

현재 세계의 경제 강국들은 각기 자기 국가의 정체성을 대표하는 사상이 있다. 미국의 뉴프론티어정신, 일본의 무사도정신 등이 그것이다. 그러한 국가의 정체성(또는 국격(國格), 이하 국격)은 세계 경제 강국들이 국가의 경쟁력을 키우고, 지속가능경영을 위한 국가의 제반 정책의 바탕이 되고 있다. 이와는 달리 우리나라에선 제반 분야 정책 수립의 바탕이 될 공인된 국격이나 사상이 없는 안타까운 실정이다. 국격의 부재는 국가 경쟁력의 바탕이 될 정신적인 동력의 부재와 무관하지 않은 까닭에 국가적 경쟁력을 위해서는 우리 민족의 정신적 유산 속에서 국격을 구체화하는 노력이 필요하다고 하겠다.
이 논문은 우선 영남학파에 한정하여 ‘퇴계의 자기수양과 참 공부’가 어떤 현대적 의미가 있으며, 국격의 맥락에서 어떤 연관이 있을 수 있는지를 재고(再考)한 것이다. ‘퇴계의 자기수양과 참 공부’의 내용은 영남학파의 학자들과 주고 받은 편지글에서도 잘 나타난다. 퇴계의 ‘자기수양과 참 공부’의 요체는 경(敬)이다. 경(敬)은 바로 마음의 주재력에 의해 욕망과 잡다한 사념이 제어되어 몸과 마음이 하나로 통일된 상태를 말한다. 퇴계는 마음이 하나로 통일된 상태가 지속되어야만 참 공부에 도달할 수 있다고 보았다. 또한 퇴계는 “심학(心學)의 요점은 인욕(人慾)을 버리고 천리(天理)를 보존하는 데에 있다.”고 주장하였다. 천리를 보존하는 참 공부는 퇴계의 관점에서는 경(敬)의 실천에 의해 가능한 것이며, 인욕과 천리를 변별하여 사욕을 버리고 타인과 공생과 화해를 가능케 하는 본성이 나의 마음속에 있음을 깨닫고 그것을 더욱 크게 발휘하게 하는 것이 퇴계의 자기수양과 참 공부의 의의라 할 것이다.
퇴계의 심학은 타인과 자연에 대해 상생과 조화로운 삶을 추구하기 위해서는 공부와 수양을 통해 소유론적 욕망을 절제하고 천리인 존재론적 욕망을 충족하는 길을 제시하고 이발(理發)을 통해 지식인의 실천역행을 주장하고 있다. 물질만능주의와 시장경제논리가 대세인 현 시점에서 상충되는 욕망의 피해자를 구원하는 ‘행동하는 양심[理發]’이 정책적으로 필요하다면, 퇴계의 심학은 현대 학문에도 설 자리가 생기는 것이며, 퇴계가 평생을 통해 한결같이 실천해 온 ‘선비정신’이 우리 나라의 국격으로 선정되어야 하는 가장 큰 이유가 될 것이다.

영어초록

Current world economic powers have a thought of their own that represents the identity of their state. They are the New-frontier Spirit in the U.S. and the Samurai Spirit in Japan. Such identity of a nation(or national status, to be called from now on) is becoming the ground of various national policy making for world economic powers to raise national competitiveness and to secure sustainable management. On the contrary, it is regrettable that there is not any authorized national status or thought in Korea that would be the ground of national competitiveness in various fields. The absence of national status is not irrelevant to the absence of mental power, the ground of national competitiveness. It should be necessary to make efforts to concretize the national status in the mental heritage of the nation for the sake of the national competitiveness.
This thesis limited its research to the school of Yeongnam considering what kind of modern meaning the 'Toegye's self-discipline and genuine study' is able to bear and what kind of relation it can have with the national status. The content of 'Toegye's self-discipline and genuine study' is also well represented in the letters exchanged between he and scholars of the school of Yeongnam. The key of 'Toegye's self-discipline and genuine study' is Gyeong(敬). Gyeong is a state of unity of body and mind in which desires and various wicked thoughts are removed by the supervision of mind. Toegye believed that true study could be reached only when the state of unity of mind lasted. He also maintained that the key of Simhak(心學) is to abandon the human desires(人慾) and to retain the heavenly principles(天理). The true study to retain the heavenly principles, from the standpoint of Toegye, is possible by practicing Gyeong. The significance of Toegye’s self-discipline and true study would be to discern between human desires and heavenly principles, to give up wicked thoughts, to realize that the nature enabling living together and reconciliation is in mind and to let it exerted much more.
Toegye's Simhak(心學) presented a way of restraining possession-oriented desires through study and discipline and filling up the ontological desire, the heavenly principl. It also maintained the intellectuals' practical endeavors through Yibal(理發). At current point where materialism and the principle of market economy prevails, if the 'acting conscience[理發]', which will save the victims of conflicting desires, is needed politically, Toegye's Simhak might have a stand in between modern studies. 'That must be the greatest reason why the 'Sunbi spirit' that Toegye had practiced constantly throughout his life should be selected as the national status.
