차펙의 소설『호르두발』에 나타난 주제, 기법과 형식의 문제 (A Study of Themes, Literary Technique and Forms in Čapek's Novel Hordubal)

초록

카렐 차펙의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 3부작 소설 『호르두발』, 『유성』,『평벙한 인생』에서 그는 소설적인 상황을 통해 진리의 절대성
보다 상대성에 깊은 신뢰를 보여주고 있다. 체코 출신의 세계적인 문학
이론가이자 비평가인 르네 웰렉에 의하면 그의 문학작품은 세계의 모
든 언어권에서 쓰인 철학 소설의 시도 중에서 가장 성공적인 작품의
하나라고 한다.
『호르두발』은 진실에 대한 상대주의 철학의 입장을 표명하고 있
다.『호르두발』은 신문기사에서 힌트를 얻은 살인사건이 중심이 된
비교적 이해하기 쉬운 줄거리로 되어 있다. 주인공 호르두발은 돈을 벌
기 위해서 미국 광산에서 일하고 8년 만에 귀향하나 집에서나 이웃에
서나 이방인 대접을 받는 등 방황하다가 집안에서 살해된다. 그러나 작
가의 독특한 묘사 방법 즉, 주인공 호르두발을 묘사함에 있어 전통적인
심리묘사에 의하지 않고 ‘내적인 독백’이라는 모더니즘 방법을 쓰기 때
문에, 독자들도 어느덧 주인공의 내적인 세계로 빨려들어 가게 된다.
그리고 문학기법상 역시 독특한 ‘간접화법’이라는 수단을 사용한다. 그
래서 화자의 말이 아니라 생각이 전달되며, 실제 화자가 누구인지 모호
하다. 예컨대 주인공은 어떤 인물을 보고 자신에게 어떤 말을 하리라는
추측을 하며, 거기에 대한 자신의 말을 내적인 독백으로 표현한다.
특히 제1부에서 이러한 내적인 독백을 통해서 고독한 주인공 호르두
발의 감성과 이미지를 잘 묘사해, 독자로 하여금 주인공에게 불쌍한 감정을 갖게 한다. 또한 제1부에는 비유적 표현이 아주 풍부하고 기본구
조는 소를 키우며 농사짓는 토착민인 슬라브계 목가적인 주인공 호르
두발과 헝가리계 유목민 출신으로 말을 잘 다루는 인물인 이 집의 머
슴 마냐 사이의 대립구조로 되어있다. 이 과정 속에서 호르두발 자신이
내적 고백을 통해 스스로에 대한 진실을 탐구하고, 제2부에서는 두 명
의 형사가 호르두발의 아내 폴라나의 정부 마냐에 의한 주인공 살해에
대한 진실을 탐구하지만 명확하게 규명하지 못한다. 그리고 제3부에서
는 재판부가 호르두발 살해사건에 대한 진실을 규명하고자 하지만 절
대적인 진실규명에는 실패한다.
『호르두발』에서 차펙의 관심사는 한 사건에 대한 인간의 관점이
다양하다는 것을 보여주는 것이다. 즉 진실이란 절대적일 수 없다는 것
을 호르두발의 살해사건을 통해서 보여준다.
소설 속에는 주인공의 죽음을 암시하는 송곳 모티프가 가장 강렬하
게 나타나고 그 외 소떼의 귀향 모티프, 죽음의 모티프, 집시 모티프와
유대인 모티프 등 여러 모티프가 나온다. 송곳 모티프는 소설이 진행되
면서 변형된 비유적인 의미를 띈다는 것이 독특하다. 차펙의 소설 작품
에서 사용되는 구어체 체코어는 그 자체의 이야기체의 고안과 효과를
발전시키는 새로운 담화체 이야기양식의 기반이 된다.

영어초록

Karel Capek's trilogy Hordubal, Meteor and An Ordinary Life,
which are considered as his master works, assigns trust in relativity
rather than absolute truth in the context of a novel.
According to Rene Wellek, an international literary theorist and
critic of Czech birth, of all the attempts at a philosophical novel in
any language this trilogy is the most successful. Hordubal
expresses the standpoint of relativistic philosophy of truth. Hordubal
is inspired by newspaper article and has a relatively simple and easy to understand plot which centers around a murder case.
The hero Hordubal, after working at an American mine for 8
years, returns to his homeland where he is treated as an outsider by
his family and kinsfolk, afterwards he is murdered in his home.
However instead of using traditional methods of psychological
description to describe Hordubal, the writer uses a unique and
modernistic descriptive method of “Interior Monologue” which
captivates the reader and brings him directly into the inner world of
the hero. He also applies the unique literary technique of reported
speech. So that the narrator's thoughts and not his articulated
words are conveyed, this makes determining who the actual narrator
is vague.
For example, the hero looks upon another character and guesses
what he is about to say to him, to which he remarks in interior
monologue. Especially in part 1, this method of interior monologue is
effective in expressing the hero's emotions and thoughts, and thus
has the effect of making the reader sympathize with him in a short
time. Part 1 is also abundant with metaphoric expressions and
imagery and its basic structure consists of the contrast between
Hordubal, a homesteading farmer of Slavic descent who raises
cattle, and Manya, a laborer of nomadic Hungarian descent who
raises horses. In the progress of the story Hordubal examines the
truth about himself in interior monologue.
In part 2, two detectives try to find the truth surrounding the
murder of the hero, by his wife Polana and her lover Manya, but
are unable determine anything. In part 3 the court also tries to
uncover the true facts of the murder but fails at attaining the
absolute truth. In Hordubal Capek focuses his attention on the fact
that people have different perspectives when viewing a single event,
which in the case of this novel is the murder case of Hordubal, and
in light of this concludes that truth can never be absolute.
The most prominent motif of the novel is the awl(bodkin) motif
which signifies the death of the hero, there are also may other
motifs in the novel including the motif of the return of the herd of
cattle, the death motif, the Gypsy motif and the Jewish motif. It is noteworthy that as the story proceeds the awl motif becomes
warped so that it has a metaphoric meaning to it.
The colloquial style of Czech used in Capek's work becomes a
base for new narrative style which develops the device and effect of
narrative itself.
