‘시 짓는 기술’의 탄생 원인 —아리스토텔레스의 『시학』 1448b4-24 (The Causes that engendered the Art of Composing Poetry —A Study on Aristotle’s Poetics 1448b4-24—)

초록

아리스토텔레스는 『시학』 제4장에서 두 가지 본성적인 원인이 시 짓는 기술을 낳았다고 말한다. 그러나 본문에서는 모방하기의 본성과 모방물에서 즐거움을 느끼는 본성, 그리고 모방의 수단인 박자와 가락의 본성, 이 세 가지가 원인처럼 열거된다. 난해한 수수께끼와도 같은 이 문제에 대해 세 가지 해석이 있다. 첫째는 모방하기의 본성과 모방물에서 즐거움을 느끼는 본성이 아리스토텔레스가 말하는 두 가지 원인이며, 나중에 덧붙은 가락과 박자의 본성은 모방하기의 본성으로 환원된다는 해석이다. 둘째는 모방물에서 즐거움을 느끼는 본성은 모방하기의 본성에서 파생된 것이므로 별도의 원인이 아니며, 가락과 박자의 본성이 두 번째 원인이라는 해석이다. 셋째는 모방하기의 본성은 시 짓는 기술을 낳은 원인이라고 보기엔 너무 일반적인 것이어서 제외되어야 하며, 모방물에서 즐거움을 느끼는 본성과 가락과 박자의 본성이 두 가지 원인이라는 해석이다. 그러나 열거된 본성들을 시인에 내재한 원인과 감상자에 내재한 원인으로 구분하고, 이 두 원인 사이의 유기적 관계를 포착한다면, 문제를 좀 더 논리적으로 해결할 수 있다. 실제 대상을 모방하려는 본성과 그것을 표현하는 모방 수단의 본성이 작가(시인)에 내재한 본성이며, 전자는 감상자의 지적 쾌감과 연결되는 반면, 후자는 감상자의 감각적 쾌감과 연결된다. 따라서 아리스토텔레스가 시 짓는 기술을 낳은 두 가지 원인이라고 말한 것은 크게는 작가 내재적 원인과 감상자 내재적 원인을 가리키며, 작가 내재적 원인에 좁혀 보면, 모방의 내용을 구성하는 모방하기의 본성과 모방의 형식을 결정짓는 모방 수단의 본성이 그 두 가지 원인이다.

영어초록

In the chapter 4 of the Poetics, Aristotle says that two natural causes engendered the art of composing poetry. But in the text, three instincts are enumerated just like the causes: (1) instinct of imitating, (2) instinct of enjoying mimetic objects, (3) instinct of melody and rhythm as media of imitating. There have been three interpretations of this enigmatic problem. First, some scholars say that the instincts (1) and (2) are the very causes that Aristotle would like to say, while the instinct (3) should be reduced to the instinct (2). Second, some other scholars say that the instinct (2) is not a cause because it is derived from the instinct (1), but the instinct (3) is the second cause. Third interpretation is that the two causes are the instincts (2) and (3), while the instinct (1) cannot be counted as a cause, because it is too general to be a cause. However, if we divide the three instincts into the immanent cause in poets and the immanent cause in appreciators, and then understand the relation between the two causes, we can more logically solve the problem. The instinct of imitating a real object and the instinct of the media of imitating as melody and rhythm are immanent cause in poets; the former is connected to the appreciators’ intellectual pleasure, while the latter to their sensual pleasure. In conclusion, the two causes that Aristotle says engendered the art of composing poetry are largely the immanent instinct in poets and the immanent instinct in appreciators, and only looking at the immanent instinct in poets, the two causes are the instinct of imitating that makes contents of imitation and the instinct of the media of imitating (melody and rhythm)
