신문소설 삽화를 통한 감상자의 심리적 거리 형성 연구 -『인형의 집을 나와서』(1933)를 중심으로 (A Study on the Formation of Psychic Distance through Illustrations -Focusing on Leaving the Doll’s House(1933))

초록

본고는 근대 신문연재소설과 함께 지면 위에 배치되었던 삽화의 존재에 주목하여, 감상자가 작품을 통해 형성하는 ‘심리적 거리’에 삽화가 영향을 끼치는 양상에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 연구 대상으로는 채만식이 1933년 조선일보에 연재한 『인형의 집을 나와서』를 삼는다. 당시 감상자들은 중심인물 ‘노라’가 겪는 고난을 자신과 무관하지 않은 것으로 여기고, 노라를 향한 감정을 중심으로 하여 심리적 거리를 형성하고 있다. 또한 해당 작품에서는 하나의 소설에 세 명의 다른 삽화가가 삽화를 그려, 감상자의 심리적 거리가 삽화의 변화에 따라 역동적으로 달라지는 양상이 드러난다.
첫 번째 삽화가 길진섭은 노라의 눈으로 보는 것과 같은 ‘1인칭 시점’ 삽화를 다수 그리고, 노라의 감정을 음영 표현을 통해 강조한다. 이는 노라와의 심리적 거리를 가깝게 하여 감상자가 고난을 겪는 노라에게 더욱 공감할 수 있게 한다. 두 번째로 김규택은 카페 여급이 된 노라의 모습을 만화적으로 우습게 표현함으로써 심리적 거리를 멀게 한다. 이는 카페 여급에 대한 부정적인 시선이 반영된 것일 수 있다. 마지막으로 안석영은 명암과 구도 등의 표현을 통해 노동자로 거듭나는 노라에게 숭고함의 색채를 덧입힌다. 이는 심리적 거리를 다시 가깝게 하고 감상자가 노동자로서의 노라를 응원하도록 만든다.
본고는 심리적 거리 개념을 통해 삽화와 소설이 만들어내는 역학에 감상자의 존재를 적극적으로 기입하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그럼으로써 삽화의 역할이 단지 소설의 서사를 내용적으로 보충하는 차원에 불과한 것이 아니라, 감상 과정에 영향을 끼치고 감상자의 심리를 구성하는 데에도 분명히 기여하고 있다는 점에 대해 구명하고자 한다. 삽화 연구에서 감상자 중심으로의 전회를 꾀하는 이러한 본고의 논의는, 이를 통해 삽화의 영향력과 그 중요성에 대해 밝히고 나아가 삽화 연구의 새로운 지평을 열고 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This paper pays attention to the existence of illustrations that were presented with serial novels on modern newspapers, and tries to find out how those illustrations had affected the appreciator to form the ‘psychic distance.’ This study focuses on Chae, Man-sik’s Leaving the Doll’s House, which had been serially published in the Chosun Newspaper in 1933. It seems that the appreciators had regarded the adversity of the main character ‘Nora’ as that of themselves, and formed a psychic distance based on what they feel from her story. In addition, the change of the illustration styles due to the participation of three different illustrators in the illustrations of the novel, resulted the dynamical changes to the appreciator’s psychic distance.
The first illustrator, Gil, Jin-seop, drew a number of ‘first-person view’ illustrations like seeing through Nora’s eyes, and emphasized Nora’s disturbing emotions using shades. This narrows down the psychic distance of the appreciators, allowing them to sympathize more with Nora, who is going through various difficulties. On the other hand, Kim, Kyu-taek, the second illustrator, put some psychic distance to the appreciators, by expressing Nora comically who became a cafe waitress. This is considered to be representing the negative gaze toward cafe waitresses. The third and last illustrator, Ahn, Seok-yeong added a color of sublimity to Nora using contrast and composition, who is newly reborn as a worker. This would have allowed the appreciators to have the previous psychic distance and supported Nora as a worker.
The purpose of this paper is to actively enter the existence of the appreciator in the dynamics created by illustrations and novels through the concept of psychic distance. Thus, it has intended to clarify that the role of illustrations is not just a matter of supplementing the narrative of novels in terms of content, but that they actually influence the appreciation process, and moreover definitely contribute in constructing the psychology of the appreciators. The discussion of this paper, seeking a turn to the appreciator- centered in illustration studies, has significance of revealing the influence and importance of illustrations and opens a new horizon to illustration studies.
