수록 민담의 유형 분포 분석을 통한 일제 강점기 3대 전래동화집의 성격 고찰 (The Study of Character by Distribution Analysis of Contain Folk Tales in The Three Fairy Tale Collections During the Japanese Colonial Rule over Period.)

초록

일제강점기의 3대 전래동화집은 그전까지 구비문학으로만 존재했던 아동 대상의 민담류들이 처음으로 단행본으로 편찬되었다는 점에서 의의가 크다. 아울러 이들의 존재는 아동의 발견이라는 근대적 패러다임 속에서 관심을 모았던 아동문학을 구비문학의 전통과 연결고리를 만들었던 중대한 성과이기도 하다.
본고는 일제강점기 3대 전래동화집인 『조선동화집』, 『조선동화대집』, 『조선전래동화집』의 수록동화를 최인학의 <한국민담유형표>에 맞추어 분류하고, 그 유형의 각 동화집별 분포도, 대단위별 분포도, 중단위 및 중하단위별분포도를 각각 표와 그래프를 통해 알아보았다.
먼저 『조선동화집』은 ‘동식물민담(48%) > 보통민담(36%) > 소화류(3%)’의 분포도를 보이고 형식담, 신화적 민담, 기타 유형에는 해당 설화가 없다. 즉, 세계적으로 동화류 가운데 가장 분포도가 높은 동식물민담이 이 책의 분포도에서 1순위를 차지하고 있는 것이다. 이 책의 주된 목적은 조선 아동을 식민지 국민으로 기획하고 양성하기 위함이었으므로, 그 대상 독자를 철저히 조선의 아동으로 하였다. 따라서 동화가 갖고 있는 속성에 충실한 민담류를 최대한 선별한 결과, 동식물 민담류가 높은 분포도를 보이고 있다고 할 수 있다.
『조선동화대집』에서는 ‘소화(42.17%) > 동식물민담(30.12%) > 보통민담(25.30%) > 신화적민담=기타(1.20%)’의 분포 순위를 보이고 있다. 즉 소화류가 가장 높은 분포도를 보이고 있는 것이다. 이 책의 저자 심의린은 한글학자이자 교육자였다. 일제강점기라는 국가적 위기를 조선의 올바른 교육으로써 극복하고자 했던 사람이다. 그가 스스로 대상으로 지목한 독자가 ‘학동’이므로, 이들을 의식한 동화들이 자연스럽게 모인 책이 바로 『조선동화대집“이라 할 수 있다. 단, 아동 중에서도 배우는 아동을 대상으로 하기 때문에 배움에 적합한 이야기가 좀더 치중된 것이 분포도에서 드러난다. 이 책에는 소화류 가운데에서도 ‘바보 이야기’나 ‘어른과 아이’에 대한 이야기의 비중이 높은데, 이들은 지혜를 교훈으로 하는 이야기들이 대부분인 것이 바로 이를 증명하고 있다.
『조선전래동화집』은 ‘보통민담(57.33%) > 소화(24%) > 동식물민담(12%) > 형식담=신화적민담(2.67%) > 기타(1.33%)’의 분포 순위를 보이고 있다. 보통 민담이 절반을 넘는 분포도를 보이고 있다. 이 책은 ‘동화’라는 표제를 달고 아동을 대상으로 책을 편찬하고 있긴 하지만, 아직껏 민담과 동화의 개념이 혼재되어 있는 과도기적 양상을 보이고 있다. 아동에게 부적절한 민담이 수록된 점이나 그 이전 설화집과 비슷한 편찬 방식을 보이고 있다는 점, 서문에서 동화와 민담을 동의어로 취급하고 있는 점은 분명 당시 민담과 동화의 개념 인식이 불분명하다는 점이 드러난다. 이는 저자 박영만이 독립운동가로서 자주정신에 입각한 민담의 수집과 편찬을 우선시한 결과 대상 독자로서의 아동을 크게 중시하지 않은 채로, 스스로나 주변 사람에게 어린 시절 들었던 이야기들을 모으는 것을 일차적인 목적으로 삼았기 때문으로 여겨진다.
