초록

조선문학가동맹은 1945년 12월 13일에 결성된 해방기의 대표적 좌익문학인 단체이다. 민족문학을 기치로 내건 조선문학가동맹은 창작방법론으로 진보적 리얼리즘을 내세웠다.『조선소설집』은 조선문학가동맹이 그 단체의 이름을 걸고 “민주주의 민족문학의 이념”의 “침전물”로서 의미있다고 판단된 것을 모아 1947년 6월에 간행한 작품집이다. 본고는 진보적 리얼리즘이라는 창작방법론의 구체적 면모와 그 의미를 『조선소설집』을 통해 살펴보고자 했다.
『조선소설집』은 조선문학가동맹이 말하는 진보적 리얼리즘의 다양한 면면을 확인케 한다. 조선문학가동맹은 공히 민주주의 민족문학과 진보적 리얼리즘을 내세웠지만 실상 그 내부의 목소리까지 단일한 것은 아니었다. 예컨대 “인민에의 복무”나 긍정적 영웅의 형상화를 주장하거나 “객관적 현실을 주로 하는 리얼리즘”이나 민중연대성을 앞세우는 등, 서로 다른 논리에 근거하여 다양한 논의들이 진행되었다. 따라서 특정의 논리에 부합, 이를 잘 구현하고 있다고 해서 그것이 곧 모든 논리에 부합함을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 때로는 어떤 논리와는 잘 맞는 것이 오히려 다른 논리와는 상충하기도 하는 것이다. 이로 인해 그리고자 한 것과 그려진 것은 겹쳐지지만, 그와 동시에 항상 미끄러지고 부딪치기도 한다.
조선문학가동맹은 결국 진보적 리얼리즘을 통해 선도와 복무의 문학보다는 가급적 많은 이들을 포괄할 수 있는 대중적 연대의 문학을 모색했으며 『조선소설집』은 그 노력의 일면을 보여준다. 다양한 논의가 있었던 만큼 작품의 성향 역시 하나로 모아지는 것은 아니지만 결국 『조선소설집』에서 다수를 이루고 있는 일련의 작품들은 조선문학가동맹의 주류적 입장, 곧 “혁명적 로맨티시즘을 계기로서 내포하는 진보적 리얼리즘”의 구현에 보다 가깝다 하겠다. “아이디얼리즘”만을 내세우는 대신 필진만큼이나 다양한 성향의 작품들을 담고 있다는 점에서 더욱 그렇다. 또한 이처럼 다양한 작품들은 국가건설 및 새로운 민족문학을 과제로 한 시기에 민주주의 민족문학의 성취를 위해서는 결코 피할 수 없는, 그리하여 적절한 첫 걸음이라고 할 정체성 재구성을 위한 고민과 탐색 과정을 보여주는 것이기도 하다. 이후 격변하는 시대적 상황으로 인해 자연스러운 전개가 불가능해졌지만, 이런 측면에서 본다면 적어도 출발점에 있어서만큼은 그 나름 정당한 위치에 서 있었다 하겠다.

영어초록

Korean Writers Alliance is one of representative left-wing literature groups during the liberation period, which was established on Dec 13th, 1945. It set forth progressive realism as its creation methodology under the banner of national literature. 『Collection of Korean Novels』 is the anthology published by Korean Writers Alliance in June, 1947, risking its name and collecting what had been evaluated to be meaningful as the “precipitate” of “the ideology of democratic national literature.” This paper aims at examining the specific aspects and meanings of the creation methodology of progressive realism through 『Collection of Korean Novels』.
In this respect, 『Collection of Korean Novels』 helps confirm various sides of the progressive realism asserted by Korean Writers Alliance. It officially claimed democratic national literature and progressive realism, but, in fact, different positions existed inside it. Some insisted on “service for the public” or the embodiment of positive heroes, and others argued “realism mainly with objective reality” or bond of the people. Accordingly, what coincided with one theory didn't necessarily satisfy all stances. Sometimes, what accords with a logic can rather contradict with others. Because of this, what was meant to express and what's been depicted are usually overlapped, and simulta neously, at odds with each other.
Korean Writers Alliance eventually pursued the literature which could embrace as many people as possible for the bond of the public through progressive realism, rather than the literature of guidance and service, 『Collection of Korean Novels』displays one side of that effort. As there were various kinds of discussion going on, the tendency of the works also was not fused into one, but ultimately, a series of works in 『Collection of Korean Novels』were closer to the realization of “progressive realism that implies revolutio nary romanticism as its motivation” emphasized by those consisting of the majority of Korean Writers Alliance. It's more true in that it held works as various as their authors, instead of asserting only “idealism.” Moreover, these diverse works showed the process of deliberation and search for the reestabli shment of identity, which could not be avoided for the accomplishment of democratic national literature, and therefore, which was a proper first step, during the time with the tasks of the foundation of a nation and new national literature. The rapidly changing situation of the times after it made its natural development impossible, but at least at the starting point, it was standing on the right position in its own way.
