초록

소설은 인간 중심의 문학이며, 인물은 작가가 궁극적으로 보여주고자 하는 주제의식을 담는 중요한 요체이다. 작가는 허구적 인물을 통하여 자신의 사상과 감정을 내포하고 사실적으로 보여줌으로써 독자를 납득시키고 감동시키기 때문에 인물의 형상화 문제는 창작의 핵심이 된다.
필자는 소설 창작 방법과 창작 교육을 위한 연구에 의미를 두고 있어 천운영 소설에 나타난 인물의 형상화 방법에 대하여 고찰하였다. 창작기법적인 측면으로 접근·분석함으로써 인물의 형상화 기법을 배우고 인물의 성격과 행동에 작가의 의도가 어떻게 긴밀하게 연관되어 있는지를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다.
소설가 천운영은 2000년 동아일보 신춘문예에「바늘」이 당선되면서부터 현재에 이르기까지 섬뜩하리만치 불길해 보이는 독특한 인물들을 생생하게 형상화함으로써 작가의 사상과 문제의식을 일관되게 보여주고 있다.
본고에서는 소설집『바늘』을 중심으로 천운영 소설에 나타난 인물의 형상화 방법을 외양과 행동의 제시, 외변기법(外邊技法)과 담화의 제시, 타인에 대한 태도 제시, 과거와 의식의 흐름 제시로 구분하여 살펴보았다.
천운영 소설의 인물들은 추하고 기형적인 육체의 소유자들로 선천적으로 결핍을 안고 태어난 불구이미지의 여성들이다. 인물들은 맹렬한 식욕과 육식성, 육체에 대한 집착과 폭력성, 공격성향을 드러내는데 불완전한 가족, 열등한 신체 등 정신적 외상(外傷)의 비틀린 흉터이다.
타인에 대한 행동들은 다양하게 나타나지만 억압되어 있던 본능에의 욕구가 분출된 행태라는 일관성을 지닌다. 과거와 의식의 흐름 등을 통해 드러난 부재한 가족, 세계에 대한 두려움과 적의는 방어와 공격적인 형태로 드러나 인물에 대한 이해와 흥미가 한층 깊어졌다. 이는 작가가 소설 속의 행동과 일상적인 행동 사이의 공통점을 생각하면서 인물의 보편적․정신적 특질을 명시해 주었기 때문이다.
이처럼 독특한 인물들을 생생하게 형상화함으로써 작가의 사상과 문제의식을 보여줄 수 있는데, 천운영의 소설집『바늘』은 관습적인 여성성에서 빗겨난 인물들을 그로테스크한 이미지로 형상화하여 사회의 고정관념을 깨뜨리고 가치를 전복시킴으로써 뒤틀린 욕망과 결핍의 인물들을 미학적 세계로 끌어올렸다.

영어초록

The novel is a literary genre where human is cantered and the character is the essential core in which the writer put the theme s/he ultimately wants to convey. Since the writer includes his or her own thought and emotion in the fictional characters and makes the reader moved with its realistic figuration, the subject-matter of character figuration is a key that makes a work to be an artistic entity.
Concerned with the study into the novel creation skill and the education of novel creation, I have explored in this thesis the character figuration skill in the novels of Cheon Woon Young. The aim of this thesis is to unearth the character figuration skill by the analysis of the creative skill of the writer and to examine the close relationship between the writer’s intention and the nature and behaviour of the characters.
The novelist, Cheon Woon Young, from her debut through Don-A newspaper Spring Literary Competition in 2000 with her「needle」to now, has consistently shown her thought and view by vividly creating the unique characters that appear to be extremely inauspicious.
This thesis has accounted for the character figuration skills in the novels of Cheon Woon Young focusing on her book『Needle』by dividing them into the presentation of appearance and behaviour (physical appearance, habit), of discourses (naming, job, hobby, tone), 외변기법(外邊技法), of the attitude towards the other, of past, and of the flow of consciousness.
The characters in the novels’ of Cheon Woon Young are the women, having the ugly and odd physical appearance, with the image of disabled people who were born with innate lack. They exhibit vehement appetite, carnivorous attitude, obsession with body, violence, and aggressiveness, and they are the mark of trauma such as inferior body and imperfect family.
Though their acts towards the other are diverse, they have consistency and unity in that they are formed by the desire for the instincts suppressed and oppressed. The absent family disclosed through the past and flow of consciousness, and the aggressiveness transformed from the fear and antagonism towards the world make the course of reading the characters more interesting. This is because the writer has clearly reveal the universal mental feature of the characters taking into consideration the common ground both for daily behaviour and the behaviour of the character in the novel.
The thought and standpoint of the writer on some issue can be disclosed by way of the feature of unique characters in the novel, vividly described. The book『Needle』by Cheon Woon Young, creating the characters with the grotesque images who are far from the conventional women, smashing the established notions in society, and subverting the recognized value, has successfully constructed the aesthetically sublimed world of the characters with the twisted desire and lack.
The thesis intends to disclose a skilful novel technique attained through the practice of the character figuration skill by examining the skill in concrete way, and explicating the close and intimate relation between the writer’s intention and the behaviour and personality of the character in the novel.
