An exemplum in the Bonum universale de apibus, written by Thomas of Cantimpré, illustrates the tale of a girl and her psalter.
The short story reveals certain historical realities related to medieval religious and literacy education in the 13th century. First, the female protagonist asks her father to buy her nothing less than a psalter.
This book, which was originally a liturgical text, was used during the Middle Ages as an elementary reading manual for medieval monks and laymen alike. By reciting and memorizing psalms, they acquired basic knowledge in alphabetic language, while at the same time learning the necessary aspects to understand Christian faith.
Secondly, the role of the Virgin Mary, who gave the girl a psalter in her dream, is significant to this narrative. During the Middle Ages, mothers played an important role in the moral and religious upbringing of their children. In some cases, aristocratic women even took on the responsibility to teach basic educational milestones to their children. From the 14th century, this role of the mother as an educator is represented in the iconography of Saint Anne and a young Maria, which lends itself to the allegory signified in the aforementioned story. In the exemplum, the Virgin Mary gives her a psalter in a dream, and completes the miraculous act by bestowing upon her the capacity to read.
Finally, the story presents the existence of a school for girls,which are rarely mentioned in the written sources because the clergy are indifferent of this subject. However, from the 13th century, the old system of monastery schools was declining and a new system of educational institutions began to develop in its place. In particular,this marked not only the development of universities, but also smaller elementary schools for children. The presence of women is also attested in these new institutions for the general public’s primary education.
