김명인 시집 『동두천』에 대한 탈식민주의적 고찰의 가능성 (Study on the Post-colonial Meaning in Kim Myeong-in’s 『Dongducheon』)

초록

이 논문은 김명인 시에 나타난 타자성과 주변 의식에 대한 연구가 미흡하다는 인식에서 출발하여 시집 『동두천』을 탈식민주의의 관점으로 고찰할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 모색해보았다. 탈식민주의의 인식론이란, 근대화를 먼저 이룩했던 서구사상은 우월하고 그 나머지는 열등하다는 강자와 약자, 지배와 종속, 대척과 대립, 권리의 박탈, 고향을 잃어버림, 주변에서 물러남 등의 이분법적인 사고에서 벗어나고자 하는 것이다. 이는 중심을 비껴가면서 타자화된 인간과 인간 사이에서 박탈당한 주체의 권리를 찾겠다는 실천적 인식론이다. 본고에서 밝히고자 하는 탈식민주의의 인식론이란 식민 지배를 벗어나 독립과 자율을 누리는 상태의 이론 구성을 지칭하는 게 아니라, 우리의 의식은 물론 무의식에 이르기까지 침투해 있는 서구 중심적 사유체계를 파헤침으로써 새로운 인식의 기반을 구축해나가는 지속적인 작업과 관련이 된다.
김명인이 ‘동두천’이라는 특정 지명을 시집의 제목으로 내세운 것은 다분히 의도적이다. 동두천은 한국 내의 외국(미국)의 지역으로 굴곡의 한국현대사가 갖는 복잡성을 상징하는 공간이다. 동두천은 지금도 여전히 문화적, 인종적, 정치군사적인 사건들이 발생하는 장소이다. 김명인의 시집 『동두천』이 바로 이러한 복잡성을 구현했다는 점에 착안하여 본고는 김명인의 많은 시편들 중에서 『동두천』으로 범위를 한정하여 탈식민주의의 의미를 고찰하였다. 그 결과 김명인 시의 초기 시 세계에는 탈식민주의적 요소가 필연적으로 싹트고 자라날 수밖에 없었던 생래적인 상황을 확인하게 된다. 시대의 혼란과 전쟁으로 인한 가족사의 비극을 경험했던 김명인은 정신의 탈식민화를 꿈꾸며 억압에 대한 저항정신과 자유의지를 규명한 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the semantics of post-colonialism appearing in Kim Myeong-in’s 『Dongducheon』. The post-colonial epistemology refers to breaking away from the binary thougts that consider Western ideas, the first ones to reach modernization, to be superior and the others inferior, the logics of strong and the weak, the dominant and the subordinate, opposition and conflict, deprivation of rights, losing of homes, and marginalization. It is a practical epistemology of regaining the deprived rights of autonomous individuals among otherized human beings pushed away from the center. In Korean, postcolonialism has been translated into various expressions such as ‘out-of-colonialism’ or ‘after-colonialism’. The post-colonial epistemology used in this paper is “not referring to a theoretical construction of a state of complete independence and autonomy, free of any colonial conditions”. Rather, it is closer to a continuous attempt to establish a new basis of cognition by disecting the west-oriented thinking system that governs not only our consciousness but also our unconsciousness. Kim Myeong-in started his literary career in 1973, when his ‘Sailing Fest’ was selected in JoongAng Daily. He established the literary community ‘Bansi’ together with his fellow poets who won at the 1973 spring literary contest, including Kim Chang-wan, Jeong Ho-seung, Kim Seong-yeong, and Lee Dong-soon. The founding motivation of ‘Bansi’ was “for the Korean poetry to stand by the sorrows of the people and soothe painful wounds and determination of the country, torn in the swirls of history.” Therefore, naming the title of poetry book as ‘Dongducheon’, the name of a specific location, was heavily intentional. In Korea, a divided nation, Dongducheon is where the US army is stationed and in fact, also a ‘place of colonialism’ where almighty America constantly enforces its control and interferes. So the significance of a specific location in this first poetry of Kim Myeong-in is a natural consequence of his historical awareness on the strong and the weak, oppression and suppression, subordination and conflict. In his ‘Vietnam’ series, one of the many locations appearing in his poetry, Kim Myeong-in goes through the hybridity of being the offender, yet expressing from the perspective of the victim. Such expression of binary desires of oppression and subordination on the other, comes from his ingrained historical consciousness. Born after the independence, experiencing the Korean War, Vietnam dispatch, and Yushin regime, he realized how human right can be deprived by the political power. Despite being an intellectual, he discovers a typical and otherized characteristic of the weak, Most of all, having experienced the tragedy of a family history evoked by the chaos and war, it is a natural outcome for Kim Myeong-in to dream of a spiritual escape from colonialism in his literary works. Inevitably, a plenty of post-colonialistic elements can be found in the innate nature of Kim Myeong-in’s early poems. This thesis starts from the question why studies on such aspects of postcolonialism in Kim Myeong-in’s poetry have been overlooked thus far.
