초록

이 글은 고려 무신집권기 국왕이 주재한 주요 의례를 왕권의 위상과 관련하여 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 왕실 조상에 대한 숭배 의례인 왕실제사와 국휼의례를 중심으로 정치의 두 구심, 즉 국왕과 무신집정의 시각에서 의례의 설행 의도 및 의례 개정과 참용에 관하여 알아보았다. 명종은 왕실 조상에 대한 숭배의례를 국왕의 위상을 확인하고, 왕권을 확립하는 데 활용하였다. 재위 초반 명종은 경령전과 태묘에서 제사를 지내서, 자신이 태조의 후계 왕이며 왕정의 최고 책임자임을 과시하였다. 재위 후반 명종은 공예태후의 국휼을 주관하면서 신민과 구별되는 왕실의 존엄을 드러내고 왕권의 위상을 높이려 하였다.
최씨정권이 성립하면서 국왕의 권력은 미약해졌다. 왕권을 표상하는 왕실 조상 숭배의례를 주관하는 일은 국왕의 권리였지만 최충헌은 국휼의 상기를 단축하고 예식을 격하시켰다. 최씨집정은 국왕의 폐위와 옹립을 좌우하며 태묘에 봉안할 신주를 정하고 소목의 위차를 개정하였다. 왕통을 상징하는 의례를 개정함으로써 국왕의 실질적 권위가 향상되는 것을 제어하였다. 최우가 집권자가 되면서 최씨집정 집안의 상장례에 국휼의 왕례와 왕후례를 참용하였다. 이에 따라 왕실의례가 가지는 특수성이 사라지게 되었다. 최항집정기에 고종은 최씨집정이 권력을 승계한 것을 기념하며 왕실 조상에게 시호를 가상하였다. 최씨정권 아래서 왕들은 의례를 주재하는 권한을 온전히 행사하지 못하였다.

영어초록

This paper aims to explore the royal rituals hosted by the kings during Goryeo dynasty under the military regime. The study focuses on royal ancestral worship ceremonies and funerals. It explores the administration and the alteration of rituals, and the abuse of power, from the perspectives of the two major powers in the dynasty: the king and the military rulers. King Myeong-jong utilized the royal ancestral worship rituals to affirm his status as the highest ruler in the royal court and to also establish the royal power. King Myeong-jong, in his early years of reign, conducted ancestral ritual ceremonies at Gyeong-ryeong-jeon and Royal Ancestral Shrine in order to worship the founding King Taejo. Through these ritual ceremonies, the king affirmed that he was a part of King Taejo’s royal lineage, and he had the highest status in the dynasty. Later, when King Myeong-jong hosted the funeral of his mother, Empress Dower Gong-ye, he dignified the royal family over the common people.
When Choe military regime established, the king’s power dwindled. It was the king’s right to command royal ancestral ceremonies and funerals. However, Choe Chung-heon downgraded royal rituals by shortening the mourning period for royal funerals. Choe clan rulers exerted their power by enthroning or dethroning the king in addition to selecting the ancestral tablets along with their placement in the Royal Ancestral Shrine. The Choe rulers rewrote the royal rituals that signified royal lineage in order to prevent the kings from possessing heightened royal power. After Choe Woo, son of Choe Chung-heon, became the second ruler of the military regime, the funerals of the Choe family were conducted as if they were royal rituals. During Choe Hang’s regime, the third generation of Choe, King Gojong conducted a congratulatory ceremony celebrating the succession of power in the Choe clan. The significance of the royal rituals hosted by the king during the military regime has changed based on the power structures and the circumstances of the ritual. The significance of the royal rituals and the king’s status and power has changed as the Choe clan took over the military regime.
