한국전쟁기 군가집 연구 (A Study on Military Songbooks Published during the Korean War)

초록

이 연구는 한국전쟁기 전시 군가집이 단순히 일선 장사병을 대상으로 한 교육용 교재가 아니라 전시 국가주의를 강화하는 효과적인 매체로 인식하고, 한국전쟁기에 발간한 군가집 3종을 분석하였다. 『군가집』, 『3군 종합 군가집』, 『신선(新選) 군가집』이 그것이다. 군 당국의 감수와 검열, 군 관계자와 단체의 추천을 거쳐 발간했다는 점에서 오늘날 널리 유통되고 있는 군가집의 정전이라 볼 수 있다. 이 시기 군가의 인식과 규범을 살폈다. 이상적인 군가란 ‘우리 민족이 지녔던 웅장하고 고상한 감정을 계승하여 사기를 진작할 수 있는 창작곡’이었다. 그런 까닭에 유행가와 일본 군가의 잔재는 철저히 배제해야 할 대상이었다. 조국통일 완수를 향한 정신무장은 전선뿐만 아니라 후방사회까지 긴급하게 요청되는 과제였다. 따라서 군가집에는 권위 있는 문인과 음악인이 창작한 군가를 가려 뽑아 수록했다. 식민지시대부터 예술계에서 입지를 다진 명망가들이 대부분이었다. 주로 일본 유학이나 국내 대학의 동문 및 사제 관계, 만주 신경교향악단의 교분 관계로 결합되었다. 전시에는 군악대나 종군활동에 참여하면서 예술가로서의 명성과 입지를 견고하게 다졌다. 군가집은 한국전쟁기와 전후에 이르기까지 시대의식과 정서를 구조화시키는 효율적인 매체였다. 물론 군가집이 국민통합과 국가만들기의 수단이었다는 점에서 비판할 수 있다. 그러나 근대 비판이라는 관점에서 벗어나 인류가 상상의 질서를 사회적 기억으로 치환함으로써 공동체의 거대한 변화를 이끌어왔다는 점에서 군가집이라는 매체의 효용성을 재인식할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study analyzes three wartime military songbooks published during the Korean War, recognizing that wartime military songbooks were not only teaching materials for military song education, but also an effective medium for achieving nationalist goals in times of war. The three collections are Secondary Training Center Military Songbook, Three Armies Combined Military Songbook, Newly Selected Military Songbook. These collections are canonical in the sense that they were published under the supervision and censorship of military authorities and recommended by military officials and organizations. First, military perceptions and norms were identified. During the Korean War, the ideal military song was “a creative song that can boost morale by inheriting the grand and noble feelings of our nation,” and popular songs and remnants of Japanese military songs were to be thoroughly excluded. In order to achieve national unity, mental armament was necessary, and this should extend not only to the military but also to society. Therefore, the collection of military songs was compiled by authoritative writers and musicians. Most of them have established themselves in the art world since the colonial period. They were united mainly by alumni and master-pupil relationships at Japanese or domestic universities, and in the case of musicians, by colleagues in the Manchurian Symphony Orchestra. In wartime, they established their reputations as artists by participating in military bands and accompanying combat units. Military songbooks were an effective medium for structuring the consciousness and sentiment of the times, both during the war and in the postwar period. Military songbooks can be criticized for being a means of nation-building. However, there is a need to move beyond the old perspective of modern criticism. The utility of military songbooks needs to be reconceptualized as a medium through which humanity succeeded in making massive changes in communities by replacing imaginary order with social memory.
