초록

譯官 金秉善(1830~1891)은 『華東唱酬集』 을 편찬하며 閭巷人 작품의 집성을 기획하거나 閭巷文學 관련 문헌의 계보를 의식하지 않았던 것으로 보인다. 따라서 『화동창수집』 은 여항인에 의해 만들어지고 그들의 자료를 수록하였으되 전적으로 여항문학사의 線上에 올려두고 그 의미와 위상을 따지기에는 違和感이 없지 않다. 다만 오늘날 여항문학의 새로운 자료를 발굴하고 여항인의 활동을 재조명하는 데 있어서 『화동창수집』은 다음과 같은 의의를 갖는다.
첫째, 『화동창수집』은 본디 여항문학을 위해 만들어지지 않았으나 결과적으로 여항문학에 기여한다. 김병선은 동료들의 네트워크를 동원하여 ‘華東唱酬’에 관한 방대한 기록과 작품들을 수집하였음에도 불구하고 정작 ‘華東唱酬’에 참여한 동료들의 작품은 거의 수록하지 않았다. 그러나 『화동창수집』에는 原本이 現傳하지 않거나 그것을 찾기 어려운 여항인 관련 자료들이 轉寫되어 전한다. 이로써 『화동창수집』은 여항문학사의 끝자리에서 ‘본의 아니게’ 여항문학의 자료를 확충하고 그 연구에 기여하고 있다.
둘째, 『화동창수집』은 近代의 初入에서 역관들이 행한 문화적⋅사회적 활동의 다른 일면을 보여준다. 이 책은 다소 소극적이고 은일적인 성향을 가졌던 김병선의 ‘퇴행적’이고 ‘시대착오적’인 기획이자 성과이나, 이 책을 엮는 데는 시대의 변화를 先導하거나 그것을 追隨하였던 동료 역관들의 네트워크가 가장 중요한 토대가 되었다. 이는 近代轉換期 기술직 中人들이 詩社 등의 문화 활동에 적극 가담하고 開化를 둘러싼 사회적 운동에 일정한 역할을 하였던 사실과 表裏를 이루는 것으로, 당시 이들의 역할과 의의에 대해 再考할 여지를 준다.

영어초록

An official interpreter, Kim Byeong-seon(1830~1891) did not seem to have planned the collection of Yeohang(Middle class)’s works or been conscious of the genealogy of related literature. So Hwadongchangsujib was made by Yeohang and contained their data, but it is not without a sense of incompatibility to put it entirely on the line of Yeohang literature(literature of middle class)’s history and to weigh its meaning and status. However, in the study of Yeohang literature today, it has the following significance in discovering new materials for Yeohang literature and re-examining Yeohang's activities.
First, Hwadongchangsujib was not originally made for Yeohang literature, but it contributes to Yeohang literature as a result. Although Kim Byeong-seon mobilized a network of colleagues to collect vast records and works on Hwadongchangsu(華東唱酬), he rarely included the works of colleagues who actually participated in Hwadongchangsu. However, in Hwadongchangsujib, materials related to Yeohang that are not present in the original or difficult to find are transcribed and delivered. As a result, Hwadongchangsujib expands materials of Yeohang literature ‘unintentionally’ at the end of Yeohang literary history and contributes to its research.
Second, Hwadongchangsujib shows one aspect of cultural and social activities performed by official interpreters at the beginning of the modern era. Hwadongchangsujib is a ‘degenerative’ and ‘anachronistic’ plan and achievement of Kim Byeong-seon, who had a rather passive and seclusive character, but the network of colleagues who led or followed the changes of the times became the most important foundation for weaving this book. This is in line with the fact that Chungin(中人) in transition period to the modern era actively participated in cultural activities such as poetic society and played a certain role in social movements surrounding enlightenment, giving room to reconsider their role and significance at the time.
