청소년동반자의 보호관찰청소년 상담경험에 대한 질적연구 (A Qualitative Study on Youth Companions’ Counseling Experiences with Adolescents Under Probation)

초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 보호관찰청소년에 대한 청소년동반자의 상담경험을 심층적으로 탐구하여 경험의 본질을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 통해 보호관찰청소년상담을 포함한 청소년상담 현장에서 보완해야 하는 개입이 무엇인지, 어떤 방법으로 개입하여야 할 것인지에 대한 중요한 시사점을 제공하고자 하였다. 연구방법: 11명의 연구참여자를 대상으로 2022년 12월부터 2023년 4월까지 약 5개월에 걸쳐 심층 면담한 자료를 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학적 연구방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과: 연구결과 보호관찰청소년에 대한 청소년동반자의 상담경험은 7개의 상위주제와 18개의 하위주제가 도출되었다. 첫 번째 상위주제는 ‘양가감정을 바라봄’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘불안, 동정심이 공존함’, ‘나의 선택은’이었다. 두 번째 상위주제는 ‘혼자서 수용함’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘변하지 않는 상황’, ‘설명과 설득은 나의 몫’이었다. 세 번째 상위주제는 ‘새로움을 만들어가는 과정을 거치다’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘계속함’, ‘그들의 시간에 적응하기’, ‘사소한 변화를 알아차리기 시작함’이었다. 네 번째 상위주제는 ‘적응과 변화의 싹을 키우는 즐거움’이었으며 그 하위주제는 ‘우리들만의 약속이 생김’, ‘조금씩 나를 받아주는 아이들’, ‘그들의 이야기로 하나 되기’이다. 다섯 번째 상위주제는 ‘이겨내는 힘이 생김’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘맞춰지지 않는 퍼즐같은 현실’, ‘평범함을 발견하고 반성함’, ‘힘듦은 동병상련으로 이겨냄’이었다. 여섯 번째 상위주제는 ‘내가 가야 할 방향은’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘극복해야 하는 어려움’, ‘더 많이 준비함’이다. 마지막으로 일곱 번째 상위주제는 ‘희망의 디딤돌이 되어 나아감’이며 그 하위주제는 ‘믿을만한 어른이 되어감’, ‘만남, 그 자체가 나의 성장’, ‘동반자가 되어가다’로 나타났다. 결론: 보호관찰청소년에 대한 청소년동반자의 상담경험은 결코 작거나 가벼운 것이 아니며 상담 그 자체가 힘겨루기와도 같았다. 청소년동반자들은 그 힘겨루기를 자신의 삶의 일부분으로 받아들이며 그들을 위한 괜찮은 어른으로 버팀목이 되어주는 청소년동반자로 살아가고 있다. 본 연구는 청소년동반자들이 활동하며 겪을 수 있는 다양한 경험에 대한 대처능력 향상과 이를 토대로 하여 보호관찰청소년 뿐만 아니라 고위기청소년에 대한 상담개입 방향성을 제시하였다는데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore in depth the counseling experience of youth companions for adolescents under probation and to understand the essence of the experience. Through this, we sought to provide important implications on what interventions need to be supplemented in youth counseling fields, including counseling for adolescents under probation, and what methods should be used to intervene. Method: Data from in-depth interviews with 11 research participants over a period of approximately 5 months from December 2022 to April 2023 were analyzed by applying van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method. Results: As a result, 7 superordinate themes and 18 sub-themes were derived from youth companion's counseling experiences with adolescents under probation. The first superordinate theme was ‘looking at ambivalence’ and the sub-themes were ‘anxiety and sympathy coexist’ and ‘my choice’. The second superordinate theme was ‘accepting on my own’ and the sub-themes were ‘unchanging situation’ and ‘explanation and persuasion are my responsibility’. The third superordinate theme was ‘going through the process of creating something new’, and the sub-themes were ‘continuing’, ‘adapting to their time’, and ‘starting to notice small changes’. The fourth superordinate theme was ‘the joy of nurturing the buds of adaptation and change’, and the sub-themes were ‘we have a promise just for us’, ‘the adolescents accepting me little by little’, and ‘got united through their stories’. The fifth superordinate theme was ‘Gaining the strength to overcome,’ and the sub-themes were ‘reality like a puzzle that doesn’t fit together,’ ‘discovering and reflecting on the ordinary,’ and ‘overcoming hardships through mutual help’. The sixth superordinate theme was ‘the direction I need to go’ and the sub-themes are ‘difficulties to overcome’, and ‘preparing more’. Lastly, the seventh superordinate theme was ‘becoming a stepping stone of hope and moving forward’, and the sub-themes were ‘becoming a trustworthy adult’, ‘meeting itself is my growth’, and ‘becoming a companion’.
Conclusions: The counseling experience of youth companions for adolescents under probation who experience such diverse situations and emotions is by no means small or light, and is itself akin to a struggle of power. Youth companions accept the struggle as a part of their lives, adapt to the special environment of adolescents under probation counseling, and live as youth companions who serve as decent adults and support for them. This study is significant in that it improves the ability of youth companions to cope with the various experiences they may experience while working and, based on this, suggests a direction for counseling intervention not only for youth on probation but also for youth in advanced age.
