조손가족의 미래계획의 의미와 미래준비에 대한 질적연구 (A Qualitative Study on the Meaning and Future Preparation of Future Planning in Grandparent-headed families)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 조손가족이 생각하는 미래계획의 의미는 무엇이고, 미래를 위한 준비는 어떠한지를 살펴보고, 이들 가족이 현재의 어려움을 극복하고, 미래지향적인 계획을 설계할 수 있도록 복지지원 방안을 모색해 보는 것이다. 연구방법은 조손가족을 형성한지 2년 이상 된 가족의 조부모 6명, 손자녀 6명을 대상으로 일대일 심층 인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였으며, 수집된 자료는 Braun & Clarke(2013)의 주제분석 방법을 활용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 ʻ조손가족의 미래계획의 의미ʼ는 자신의 생애주기에 따른 미래계획이 아닌 가족 구성원의 남은 생애시간에 따른 미래계획이었다. 조부모는 자신의 신체적·경제적 노후준비를 뒤로하고, 자신의 사후 시 홀로 남을 손자녀의 미래를 걱정하며 손자녀의 이른 자립준비를 하고 있었다. 손자녀는 자신의 꿈을 키우며 진로준비를 하기보다, 늙고 병들 조부모의 건강 악화와 죽음에 대해 걱정하며 부양 및 노후돌봄을 계획하고 있었다. ʻ조손가족의 미래계획의 의미ʼ를 통해 현재의 가족이 경험하는 어려움은 미래까지 영향을 미치며, 가족들은 서로를 위해 상당한 미래 희생을 감수하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. ʻ조손가족의 미래준비ʼ는 가족 간의 정서적 지지와 공식·비공식적 지지체계의 도움을 통해 이루어지고 있었다. 가족의 정서적 지지는 현재의 어려움과 미래의 불확실성에 대해 정서적 안정을 찾을 수 있도록 도우며 긍정적으로 미래를 전망하고 미래를 계획해 나아 갈 수 있는 원동력이 되었다. 비공식적 지지체계인 친척과 이웃들은 조손가족 내에서 해결하지 못하는 미래계획의 어려움을 감소시키거나, 미래를 위한 준비과정에서 필요한 정보를 제공하는 등의 도움을 주고 있었다. 공식적 지지체계인 사회복지 서비스는 손자녀의 양육 및 학습 지원과 가족의 안정적인 생활지원을 통해 미래계획과 미래준비에 도움을 주고 있었다. 하지만 가족의 미래 불안 요인인 조부모의 건강관리와 돌봄준비, 손자녀의 진로준비와 이른 자립준비에 대한 근본적인 해결방안이 되지 못하는 것으로 드러났다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 조손가족이 미래지향적인 미래계획을 설계하고 준비할 수 있도록 돕기 위한 실천적 지원방안을 제언하였다.

영어초록

This study aimed to examine the meaning of planning and preparation for the future of grandparent-headed families and to explore welfare support measures that could help these families overcome current challenges and develop future-oriented plans. The research method involved collecting data through individual in-depth interviews with six grandparents and six grandchildren who had formed grandparent-headed families for more than two years. The collected data were thematically analyzed using the method proposed by Braun and Clarke (2013). The study found that ʻthe meaning of future plans of grandparent-headed familiesʼ was not based on their own life cycles but on the remaining lifetime of their family members. Grandparents were putting aside their own physical and financial preparations for old-age care; instead, they were making early preparations for their grandchildrenʼs self-reliance, concerned about the future of the latter, who would be left alone after their deaths. As for the grandchildren, rather than nurturing their own dreams and preparing for their careers, they were worrying about the deteriorating health and impending demise of their grandparents and planning for support and care for the latter in their old age. Through ʻThe Meaning of Future Planning in Grandparent-Headed Familiesʼ, it was revealed that family difficulties had impacts from the present to the future and that grandparents and grandchildren were making significant sacrifices for each other's future. ʻFuture Preparation for Grandparent-Headed Familiesʼ was being accomplished through emotional support between family members and the help of formal and informal support systems. Emotional support from their families helped people find emotional stability in the face of current difficulties and future uncertainties and served as a driving force to positively anticipate the future and plan for it. Relatives and neighbors, who comprised an informal support system, were offering aid by reducing difficulties in future planning that could not be resolved in grandparent-headed families or by providing necessary information in the process of preparing plans. Social welfare services, which constituted an official support system, were helping families prepare for the future through provisions for the upbringing and education of grandchildren and stable living support for the families. However, the findings also showed that it did not provide fundamental solutions to the health management and old-age care of grandparents, as well as early preparations for grandchildrenʼs self-reliance and future careers, which were factors that caused anxiety about the familiesʼ future. Based on the research results, practical support measures were discussed to help grandparent- headed families design and prepare future-oriented plans.
