초록

Jin Jaehae was a court painter under the Academy of Painting during the reign of Kings SukjongㆍKyeongjongㆍYeongjo. Skilled in portraits, he gained a reputation as the best court painter of his time by painting the portrait of king Sukjong. Geunyeokseohwajing(槿域書畫徵) by Oh Sechang, which was published in 1928, gives a detailed description about his birth and career. This book says Jin Jaehae who was born in 1691 and died in 1769 had Punggi(豐基) as his family origin, Jeongbaek(井伯) as his Courtesy name and Byeokeun(僻隱) as his nom de plume. In addition, it says he worked as the court painter and suppressed traitors during The Mooshin Revolt in 1728. However, when examining such records above with other literature, it is possible to find out that everything except for the truth that he was the court painter does not correspond to the historical facts.
It seems that Oh Sechang wrote out an article about Jin Jaehae by referring to Byeokeunyujip(僻隱遺集) known as the anthology of Jin Jaehae or the genealogy of his family Punggi Jinssi Jokbo(豐基秦氏族譜). Nevertheless, the anthology and the genealogy were forged. The Jins of Punggi who were residing for generations at Geochang included Jin Jaehae unrelated to their family in their genealogy and fabricated his life via the anthology faked. Oh Sechang cited the false record without any proper verification.
Such a false record resulted from the historically distinct characteristics of the Geochang area which was established after The Mooshin Revolt. Geochang was the place where the rebels and government forces fiercely confronted each other during The Mooshin Revolt. After the Revolt was put down, the rebels were punished thoroughly and meritorious subjects who had suppressed the rebels were celebrated. Furthermore, descendants of the meritorious subjects came to have reputation and authority in the Geochang community. Accordingly, the Jins of Punggi at the Geochang area made an attempt at turning their family to that of the meritorious subjects using the fake anthology and genealogy. The court painter Jin Jaehae was also installed as the meritorious retainer with his portraits of meritorious subjects who had suppressed The Mooshin Revolt. The Jins of Punggi fabricated their family to make it a family of the meritorious subjects by turning the meritorious subject Jin Jaehae into their ancestor.
