兩晉의 종묘제도와 ‘太祖虛位’ (A Study on the System of Royal Ancestral Shrine and False Position of the Chamber of the First King(太祖虛位) in the Jin(晉) Period)

초록

서진의 종묘는 6昭穆과 태조를 합한 7廟制를 채용하고 후한 이래의 ‘同堂異室’제를 답습하였다. 그러나 동진에서는 기존 1군주1廟의 7廟制 원칙을 방기하고 대신 형제를 하나의 昭穆으로 간주하는 賀循의 ‘兄弟同昭穆’론을 채용하여 소목의 기준을 새롭게 확립하였다. 이 ‘兄弟同昭穆’론의 도입은 동진의 잦은 형제계승과 맞물려 태조의 正位 진출을 지연시키는 결과를 가져왔고 이러한 ‘太祖虛位’ 상태는 종묘를 창건한 서진초부터 동진말까지 150여년 동안 계속되었다.
‘太祖虛位’에 함축된 또 하나의 의미는 태조가 태조로서의 역할을 다하지 못한다는 것이다. 태조의 중요한 역할중 하나는 종묘대제인 殷祭(褅祫祭)의 合食때 東向하여 나머지 신주들을 주재하는 것이다. 그러나 晉에서는 태조가 아직 正位에 오르지 못했다는 이유로 윗세대인 4府君이 계속 은제에 참가하여 東向의 자리를 차지하였다. 4부군의 은제를 중단하지 않는 이상 태조의 역할은 제한될 수밖에 없다. 4부군의 은제를 둘러싼 논란이 동진 내내 끊이지 않았던 이유도 이 때문이다.
왕조창업이나 권력구조의 대변화 뒤에는 대개 종묘의 건립 또는 재편성이 뒤따른다. 廟制는 당대 권력구조 변화의 반영이기도 하지만 때로는 현실의 정치적 필요에서 원칙이 변경되거나 새로운 廟制가 도입되기도 한다. 兩晉시기 일반 사대부가의 종법 원리였던 ‘兄弟同昭穆’이 황제종묘의 廟制로 수용된 것도 그 하나의 사례로 볼 수 있다. 현실정치의 필요에서 도입한 ‘兄弟同昭穆’론이 다시 동진의 거듭된 형제계승의 정치현실과 결합하여 빚어진 결과가 바로 장기간의 ‘太祖虛位’였다고 말할 수 있다.

영어초록

The royal ancestral shrine of the West Jin(西晉) was operated under the system of seven shrine chambers(七廟制) for the first king and his six ancestors. It implies that the ancestral tablets consisted of seven generations. As the tablet of newly died king enter the shrine, the oldest ancestral tablet excepts of the first king's was removed from the chamber due to weak familiarity. When all of the ancestral tablets older than the first king were removed, the tablet of the first king occupied the normal location in the first room as its formal position.
This system, however, was changed in the period of the East Jin(東晋). In East Jin, the counting rule on the ranks of ancestor generation was newly defined according to the ‘brother kings share the same So-Mok(兄弟同昭穆)’ theory of He-xun(賀循) in case of the succession between brothers. Sometimes the removed ancestral tablets were rearranged in the shrine chamber to fill up the lack of six So-Mok(昭穆). It rendered the tablet of the first king not to be positioned in the right location. This is called ‘false position of the chamber of the first king(太祖虛位)’. During 150 years in the period of both Jin dynasties, the ‘false position of the first king’ was continued in the reign of sixteen kings.
Another meaning posed in the ‘false position of the first king’ is that the first king did not perform his right role sufficiently. One of the important roles as the first king is to locate in the chair position among all of the ancestral tablets by turning in the east direction during big rites(殷祭), that is, di-xia rites(褅祫祭). Originally, the di-xia rites for the tablets removed from the chamber due to weak familiarity was held in a separate place or broken off permanently. In East Jin, however, the ancestral tablets were involved in big rites and arranged in the east direction because they were older than the first king in generation. Thus the debate whether the big rites for removed tablets should be broken off continued throughout the East Jin.
