페르시아 전쟁 이후 엘레우시스 미스테리아 -사제직과 성소 변화를 중심으로- (The Eleusinian Mysteries during the post-Persian War)

초록

엘레우시스 미스테리아는 엘레우시스를 대표하는 종교 의식이었으나, 엘레우시스가 아테네로 편입된 이후에는 아테네의 영향력 아래 범 그리스적인 종교 행사로 거듭났다고 할 수 있다. 엘레우시스 미스테리아의 여러 사제직 중에 가장 중요한 신관직은 히에로판테스와 다둑코스를 들 수 있는데, 히에로판테스는 에우몰포스 씨족에서, 다둑코스는 키리케스 씨족에서 배출되었다. 히에로판테스의 역할은 입교 의식과 밀접한 관련이 있었던 것으로 보이며, 다둑코스의 역할을 소 미스테리아와 관련이 깊었던 것으로 짐작된다. 비문을 보면, 이러한 사제직들은 엘레우시스가 아테네로 편입된 이후 공식적인 역할이 정립된 것으로 보이며 일정 부분에서는 변화가 있었던 것으로도 보인다.
그 중에서도 특히 다둑코스를 배출한 케리케스 씨족은 친 아테네적 성향을 다수 나타내고 있었다. 우선 페이시스트라토스 시기에 확립된 것으로 보이는 소 미스테리아를 관장하는 사제로 선택된 사제 가문은 케리케스였다. 또한 케리케스 가문은 클레이스테네스 치세 전에 아티카 지역으로 이주하여 살았던 것으로 나타난다. 마지막으로 다둑코스의 역할을 한 때는 아테네인들과 분담했던 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 점을 살펴보면 케리케스 가문은 아테네와 긴밀한 관계를 유지했던 것으로 보이며 아테네는 긴밀한 관계성을 통해 엘레우시스 미스테리아에 대한 영향력을 증대했던 것으로 추정된다.
다음으로 성소의 변화를 보면, 페르시아 전쟁으로 그리스 전역은 대부분의 지역이 폐허가 되었고 엘레우시스나 아테네도 예외가 아니었다. 페르시아 전쟁 이후 아테네인들은 엘레우시스 데메테르 성소를 복구하는데 관심을 가졌다. 키몬을 시작으로 페리클레스로 이어지는 아테네 정치인들은 엘레우시스 데메테르 성소를 재건축하고자 하였으며, 그 중에서도 텔레스테리온의 규모는 이전 시기에 비해 매우 커진 것으로 추정된다. 성소의 규모가 커지면서 방어벽에 해당되는 페리볼로스가 새롭게 세워졌는데 매우 견고하고 단단했음을 알 수 있다. 아테네의 데메테르 성소인 엘레우시니온도 변화했는데 규모가 커지고 새로운 벽을 건축했다. 이외에도 트립톨레모스의 성소가 새롭게 건축되었고 아테네와 엘레우시스 잇는 ‘신성한 길’이 형태를 갖추었다.
이러한 변화는 페르시아 전쟁 이후 아테네의 정치, 경제, 사회적 상황과 밀접한 연관이 있을 것이다. 전쟁 이후 아테네는 엘레우시스 지역에 대한 영향력을 증대했으며 이는 아테네가 엘레우시스 미스테리아에 관심을 기울이고 관여한 측면을 보면 단적으로 알 수 있다. 페르시아가 물러나고 그리스는 아테네와 펠로폰네소스 동맹 사이에 분란이 지속적으로 발생하였다. 이러한 상황 속에서 엘레우시스는 전략적으로 중요하지만 불안한 측면도 갖고 있던 지역이었다. 그러한 이유로 아테네는 엘레우시스 지역에 대한 영향력을 증대하고 엘레우시스 사람들을 친아테네적인 성향을 가진 사람들로 만들기 위해 엘레우시스 미스테리아를 이용한 것이 아닌가 싶다. 또한 엘레우시스 미스테리아를 통해 아테네인들은 여러 폴리스에 아테네가 데메테르 여신의 시혜를 받은 사람들이며 이러한 시혜를 다른 폴리스에 전하는 민족으로 보이기를 원했던 것으로 보인다.

The Eleusinian Mysteries were a religious ritual that represented Eleusis. And after Eleusis was incorporated into Athens, it was reborn as a pan-Greek religious ceremony under the influence of Athens. Of the many priesthoods of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the most important priesthood were Hierophant and Daduchos. Hierophant came from the Eumolpidae families, and Daduchos from the Kerykes families. It’s believed that the role of Hierophant appears to have been closely related to the initiation ritual, and the role of the Daduchos was closely related to the Eleusinian Lesser Mysteries. From the inscription, these priesthoods appear to have established their official roles since the incorporation of Eleusis into Athens, and in some respects they appear to have changed.
In particular, the Kerykes which produced the Daduchos, had pro-Athenian tendencies. The Kerykes was chosen to preside over the Eleusinian Lesser Mysteries which appears to have been established in the time of Peisistratos. It is also shown that the Kerykes families migrated to the Attica region and lived there before the reign of Cleisthenes. The role of Daduchos had been shared with the Athenians at one time. Looking at these points, it is believed that the Kerykes families maintained close relations with Athens, and that Athens increased its influence over the Eleusinian Mysteries through its close ties.
If we look at the change in the sanctuary, the Persian War left most of Greece in ruins, and Eleusis and Athens were no exception. After the Persian Wars, the Athenians were interested in restoring the sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis. Athenian politicians sought to reconstruct the sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis, in particularly, It is estimated that the size of the telesterion had been very large compared to the previous period. As the sanctuary grew in size, a new peribolos, the defensive wall, was erected, and it was very solid. The Eleusinion, the sanctuary of Demeter in Athens, also changed, growing in size and building new walls. In addition, a temple of Triptolemos was newly built and the 'the sacred way' between Athens and Eleusis took shape.
These changes will be closely related to the political, economic and social situation in Athens after the Persian Wars. After the Persian Wars, Athens increased its influence over the region of Eleusis, and this can be seen in the context of Athens' interest in and involvement in the Eleusinian Mysteries. With the retreat of Persia, Greece continued to turmoil between Athens and The Peloponnesian League. In this situation, Eleusis was a region that was strategically important but also had an unsettling aspect. Because of those reasons, Athens may have used the Eleusinian Mysteries to increase its influence over the region of Eleusis and to make people of Eleusis get acquainted with Athens. It also appears that through the Eleusinian Mysteries, the Athenians wanted to be seen in the various poleis as people who had received the favor of Demeter and to pass on this benefit to other poleis.
