초록

본 논문은 가톨릭교회에 지대한 영향을 미쳤던 트렌토 공의회와 제2차 바티칸 공의회의 사제직 이해를 살펴봄으로써 변화의 시대를 사는 오늘날의 사제들이 정체성을 확립하는 데에 도움을 주고자 한다.
트렌토 공의회는 교회 직무와 관련해서 종교개혁자들이 부정하였던 성사적 측면을 특별히 강조하였다. 즉, 희생 제사의 거행과 사죄의 권한을 지닌 직무 사제직 그리고 교회의 위계 구조를 부각시켰다. 반면에 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 사제직을 교회 공동체의 건설과 성장에 봉사하는 직무로 이해하면서 트렌토 공의회 이후에 협소해진 사제직 이해를 극복한다. 이는 트렌토 공의회의 사제직 이해를 거부하거나 수정한 것이 아니라 보충하는 방식으로 이루어진다.
트렌토 공의회에서는 종교개혁자들과의 대립 관계로 인해서 신자들의 보편 사제직을 분명하게 언급할 수 없었다. 하지만 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 새로운 교회 이해와 함께 세례를 통한 보편 사제직을 분명하게 인정하고, 성품을 통한 직무 사제직은 신자들이 자신들의 사제직을 충실하고도 완전하게 수행할 수 있도록 돕는 봉사 직무라고 규정한다.
트렌토 공의회에 따르면, 미사성제 거행과 관련해서 주교와 신부는 동일한 권한을 갖고 있지만, 목자의 임무와 관련해서 주교가 신부들보다 더 높은 위치에 있으면서 견진과 성품 성사를 거행할 권한이 있다. 제2차 바티칸 공의회도 주교가 신부의 위에 있다는 것을 인정하지만, 그 관계는 트렌토 공의회처럼 ‘높고 낮은’ 위치가 아니라 하나의 ‘축성과 사명의 일치’에 근거한 ‘교계적 친교’로 이해한다. 즉, 주교 축성으로 충만한 성품 성사가 수여되고, 신부는 이런 주교품에 참여하여 주교의 협조자가 되어 그리스도의 삼중 직무를 수행하면서 교회 공동체의 건설과 성장에 봉사한다.
트렌토 공의회는 교회 직무를 설교직과 동일시하려는 데에 반대해서 성사적 측면을 특별하게 강조하였지만, 직무 사제직이 다른 임무도 지닌다는 것을 모르지 않았다. 실제로 「개혁 교령」은 성사 거행과 함께 복음 선포와 사목의 임무도 함께 언급한다. 하지만 공의회 이후의 역사에서는 복음 선포가 사제직을 이해하는 데에 중요한 요인이 되지는 못하였다. 하지만 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 직무 사제직을 하느님 백성의 건설과 성장에 봉사하는 직무로 이해하면서, 직무 사제직은 그리스도의 삼중 직무, 곧 가르치고, 거룩하게 하고, 다스리는 임무에 참여하는 것이라고 규정한다. 신부들은 주교에게 서품과 파견을 받아 그리스도의 삼중 직무에 참여함으로써 복음을 선포하고 성사를 거행하면서 신자들을 사목하는데, 이 세 가지 임무는 서로 유기적으로 연결되어 있다. 사제 직무의 시작은 복음 선포에 있고 그 완성은 성찬례에서 이루어지며, 따라서 사제는 복음과 함께 성찬례를 중심으로 하는 참된 그리스도인 공동체를 형성하도록 힘써야 한다. 이렇게 제2차 바티칸 공의회는 사제들의 세 가지 임무를 유기적인 관계로 이해한다는 점에서 트렌토 공의회와 구별된다. 하지만 사제 직무의 중심을 그리스도의 희생 제사를 재현하는 성찬례의 봉헌에 두었다는 점에서는 트렌토 공의회와의 연계 선상에 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This thesis focuses on providing help on confirming the identity of today’s priests by studying the concept of priesthood as explained in the councils of Trent and Vatican II that have given great influence on the Catholic Church.
The council of Trent emphasized the sacramental portion of ecclesiastical ministry which the Reformists had strongly neglected. Hence, the ministerial priesthood that had the authority of offering sacrifices and forgiving sins was highlighted. On the other hand, the Second Vatican council understood the priesthood as a ministry of service to the building and growth of the ecclesiastical community. This does not ignore the priesthood that the council of Trent had defined but instead supplements it.
Due to the conflict with the Reformists, the council of Trent was unable to remark clearly to the believers about the common priesthood. But the council of Vatican Ⅱ, along with a new perception on the church, acknowledged the common priesthood which is founded through baptism. Furthermore, the council explained that the ministerial priesthood which is given by ordination is a ministry of service for the lay people to carry out their own ministry purely.
According to the council of Trent, both the Bishop and Priest have equal authority in celebrating mass. But as the pastoral shepherd, the Bishop surpasses the Priest and additionally has the authority to perform Confirmation and Ordination. The Second Vatican council also acknowledges this ‘hierarchy’ between the Bishop and the Priest but not as structure of superiority and inferiority but as an hierarchial communion based on the unity of blessing and mission. In other words, the Sacrament of Orders is fully conferred by the episcopal consecration, while the priest, as a cooperator to the bishop serves the building and growth of the Christian community.
The council of Trent, on opposing the attempt to combine the ecclesiastical ministry with office of preaching, especially stressed the sacramental portion. But this does not mean that the council was unaware of the other duties of priesthood. In fact the Decree on Reformation regards the obligation of proclaiming the gospel and pastoral service along with carrying out the sacraments. Yet in the aftermath of the council, the Kerygma was unable to become an important factor for the understanding of the priesthood. However, Vatican Ⅱ, understanding ministerial priesthood as a ministry for the development and increase of the people of God, verifies that the ministerial priesthood must participate in the three ‘munera’, or duties of Christ, which are teaching, sanctifying, and governing. The priest, by receiving the sacred ordination and mission from the bishop, proclaims the gospel, carries out the sacraments, and looks after the faithful. And these three duties are systematically related. The priestly office begins in the Liturgy of the Word and is completed in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Therefore the priest must exert his efforts in forming the Christian community upon the Liturgy of both the Word and Eucharist. Understanding the three duties of the priesthood in a systematic relationship is what distinguished the Second Vatican council from the former council of Trent. Yet, that the core of the priestly office lies on the Eucharistic sacrifice that relives the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, proves that both councils are closely linked.
