초록

<태원지(太原誌)>는 신이한 해양모험담과 새로운 세계에서의 창업의 서사가 소설의 독특한 창의성을 보여주고 있다. 조선은 海禁 정책을 기조로 한 폐쇄적인 국가였으나 임진왜란을 계기로 해양관의 변화를 겪게 된다. 하지만, 여전한 해양 정책으로 인한 세계 정세에 대한 정보의 부족으로 당시 조선인에게 비친 서양인들은 <태원지>의 해양 모험에 나타난 요괴들에 대한 인식과 맥락을 같이 한다.
<태원지>는 표류를 통한 해상모험담이 작품의 반을 차지할 정도로 서사에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 임성 일행에게 요괴라는 타자와의 조우는 천명을 실현하기 위한 고난의 과정으로 상징되지만, 바다를 넘어 새로운 세계로 나아가는 상상의 공간의 설정은 역설적으로는 현실의 모순이나 질곡을 의미하기도 한다. <태원지>에서 요괴를 퇴치하는 서사는 조선후기 내부의 동요와 서양이라는 강력하고 새로운 타자와 대면하는 긴장감의 발로라고 할 수 있다. 당시의 조선인들에게 서양이라는 불청객은 생소하고 이질적인 존재로 인식될 수밖에 없었다. <태원지>에서 임성 일행이 만난 섬과 요괴의 형상은 당시의 이런 서양 세력에 대한 무지와 두려움의 서사화라고 할 수 있다.
<태원지>에서 임성 일행이 원나라의 천명을 인정한 것이나 표류의 과정을 거쳐 다른 세계인 태원에서 새로운 나라를 건국한 것은 청나라의 존재와 통치의 정당성을 인정한 당시 일부 지식인들의 세계관과 통한다고 할 수 있다. 중화주의는 여전히 강한 기조를 유지했지만, 점차 청나라의 통치를 인정하려는 움직임 속에서 중국을 압도하는 서구 세력의 등장은 중화주의의 방향을 다른 이적인 서양으로 향하게 된 것이다.
<태원지>는 바로 이런 일군의 사유의 방향을 잘 보여주는 소설이라 할 수 있다. 물론 태원 정복 서사는 사유의 확장을 보여주는 신세계의 창업이라고 표현할 수는 없지만, 중원과는 차원이 다른 세계에서의 건국이라는 조선의 가능성을 기대했다고 할 수 있다. <태원지>는 소중화인 조선이 이루어 낼 중원과는 다른 문화국을 꿈꾸었던 것이다. 이는 조선후기 역사적・사회적 상황에 의해 유행한 <정감록>과 같은 祕訣信仰의 영향도 감지된다. 새롭게 등장하는 서구사상과 재래 사상과의 이념적 갈등 양상이 치열했던 시기에 정치적・문화적 이상향의 실현, 즉 유교적 이상향의 재현을 <태원지>를 통해 보여주려 한 것이다.

영어초록

"Taewonji" is a Naksunjaebon novel in which various studies have been submitted due to the specificity and creativity of the narrative. The novel's unique creativity is shown by its mysterious marine adventure and the narrative of start-ups in the new world. Joseon was a closed country based on a policy to ban maritime activities from the 14th and 5th centuries, but it underwent a change in the maritime view in the wake of the Imjin War. In addition, the emergence of the narrative of "Pyohaerok", a record of drift, played a part in the change of the ocean view. However, due to the lack of information on the world situation due to the continued maritime policy, Westerners reflected in Koreans at the time share the perception of monsters in the marine adventure of "Taewonji".
"Taewonji" plays an important role in the narrative so that the story of the sea adventure through drift accounts for half of the work. For Lim Sung and his party, the encounter with the other person, a monster, will be symbolized as a process of hardship to realize the throne, but the setting of the narrative of moving beyond the sea to a new world or imaginary space paradoxically means contradictions or frustrations of reality. The narrative of eradicating goblins in "Taiwonji" can be said to be the expression of the internal agitation of the late Joseon Dynasty and the tension of facing the powerful and new batter of the West. To Koreans at that time, the uninvited guest of the West was inevitably perceived as unfamiliar and alien. He was a stranger who invaded across the sea where not only his looks and language but also his worldview could not be understood. The shape of the island and monster that Im Sung and his party met in "Taiwonji" can be said to be an narrative of ignorance and fear of these Western forces at the time.
In "Taewonji", Lim Sung and his party acknowledged that the Yuan Dynasty received the throne and did not seek a rebellion, and started a new country in another world, Taewon, after a process of drift, is in line with the worldview of some intellectuals at the time who recognized the legitimacy of the Qing Dynasty's existence and rule. Ming-centered Chineseism still maintained a strong stance, but the emergence of Western forces overwhelming China in the movement to gradually recognize Qing rule turned the direction of Chineseism toward the other enemy, the West.
"Taewonji" can be said to be a novel that shows the direction of such a group of thoughts. Of course, the narrative of the conquest of Taewon cannot be described as the founding of the New World, which accurately grasps the situation of the time and shows the expansion of thoughts, but it can be said that Joseon expected the possibility of founding in a world different from the Jungwon. Unlike the next generation of intellectuals who will experience tyrannical exploitation by the West and Japanese imperialism, the 19th century intellectuals still accepted the state of Joseon as a whole and did not reach a strong sense of crisis that they might lose their country. "Taewonji" accepted Joseon as a whole around the world and dreamed of a cultural country different from Jungwon, which would be achieved by a small Chinese Joseon. The influence of faith such as "Jeonggamrok", which was popular due to historical and social situations in the late Joseon Dynasty, is also detected. At a time when the emerging ideological conflict between Western and traditional ideas was fierce, it was intended to show the realization of political and cultural ideals, that is, the representation of Confucian ideals through "Taewonji".
