오장환의 장시 「황무지」 연구 (A Study on the "Wasteland" of Oh Jang-Hwan)

초록

본 논문은 오장환의 초기 시 가운데 장시로서 주목받지 못한 「황무지」에 대해, 여러 판본의 변이 양상을 살펴보고 변형된 내용을 분석하고자 하였다. 오장환의 초기 시편들은 짧은 형태의 시들이 대부분이지만, 기존 연구에서 근대 사회의 현실과 근대 문명에 대한 비판을 모더니즘의 기법으로 형상화한 장시들이 주목을 받아왔다. 그러나 「황무지」는 일부만 동인지에 발표된 후 시집에는 축소된 형태로 수록되어 장시로서 주목받지 못하였다. 그러나 「황무지」의 육필 원고를 통해 그 전모가 알려지게 되었으며, 비록 초고 형태의 미발표본이지만 가장 많은 분량으로 전체를 보여주고 있고, 무엇보다 다른 판본에서는 삭제된 내용이 포함되어 있어 오장환의 초기 시세계를 밝히는 데 중요한 단서가 될 수 있다.
「황무지」는 형식면에서는 모더니즘 시에서 나타나는 의미의 불연속적인 단절과 이미지의 병치적 구성을 가진 장시이지만 내용면에서 식민지 현실의 구체적인 정황과 세계사적 불안을 간취하여 형상화하고 있다는 특징을 갖고 있다. 이 시에는 1930년대 후반 조선에 지속되었던 재해로 인해 발생한 대규모의 이재민과 그들을 만주와 북방 개척에 동원하고자 노동이민을 장려했던 총독부의 정책에 따라 시행된 이민행렬의 모습이 단속적으로 등장한다. 이 시에서 파편화된 이미지와 단절적인 의미 맥락을 통일시키는 것은 초반부와 후반부에 반복해서 등장하는 ‘풀’의 상징적 의미이며 이것은 부제에 암시된 순환성과 나아가 역사의 새로운 재생을 뜻한다. 이러한 역사의 필연성을 환기시키면서 시적 화자는 소시민성과 무기력에 빠진 현재의 ‘청년’을 각성시키고자 한다. ‘청년’은 시적 화자의 또다른 분신이라 할 수 있다는 점에서 자아의 반성과 내면적 전환을 보여주는 형상이라고 할 수 있다.
근대문명의 퇴폐상과 타락상을 풍자하고 비판하는 데 그쳤던 다른 초기의 장시와 「황무지」가 구별되는 점이 여기에 놓여 있으며 이는 중기와 후기의 시세계로 넘어가는 모습과 연결되어 있기도 하다. 장시 「황무지」의 육필원고는 다른 판본에서는 삭제되어 사라졌지만 오장환이 1930년대 후반 세계사적 파국을 통해 새로운 세계를 열망하는 역사의식과 유토피아 의식을 간직하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있게 하는 텍스트라는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper tried to analyze the “Wasteland” which is one of the early long poem written by Oh Jang-hwan. He wrote a lot of short poems but the “War” and other civilization-critical long poems are an important part of the early period of his poetry. The long poem “Wasteland” has three types of handwritten manuscripts, manuscripts published in the literary coterie magazine and manuscript included in the second collection of the poetry. It is an unpublished manuscript that contains the contents which are the most abundant and not in other editions. It is necessary to pay attention as a work. The manuscripts of magazine and the collection of the poetry are subjected to a modification process in which many parts are deleted or modified, and the traces of the text are generated. What this study sees is also the trace of deleted text.
The “Wasteland” is a long poem with a discontinuity of meaning and image formation in modernism, but it is characterized by taking into account the specific circumstances of the colonial reality and the world historical anxiety in terms of contents. In this poem, the immigration procession, which was implemented in accordance with the policies of the large-scale victims of the disaster that lasted in Korea in the late 1930s and the Japanese government that encouraged labor migrants to mobilize them into Manchuria and northern pioneering, are intermittently appearing. In this poem, unifying fragmented images and discontinuous meanings implies the symbolic meaning of 'grass' which appears repeatedly in the beginning and the end of the text, which means a renewal of the circulation implied by the subtitle and further history. Recalling the inevitability of this history, the poetic persona seeks to awaken the present “youth” who has fallen into hypocrisy and helplessness. The 'youth' is another form of the poetic person, and it can be said that it shows the reflection of the self and the internal transformation.
This is the distinction between the other early long poems and the “Wastelands” that satirize and criticize the corruption and corruption of modern civilization, and this is linked to the transition to the mid- and late-period poetry of Oh Jang-hwan. The handwritten manuscripts of “Wastelands” were changed and deleted partly in other editions, but it can be found in the sense that it is a text that makes it possible to confirm that Oh Jang-hwan had a historical consciousness aspiration for a new world through world historical catastrophe.
