공지영 소설에 나타난 ‘신경증적 욕구’와 ‘선택’의 문제 (Problems of 'Neurotic desire' and ‘Choice’ in Gong Ji-young’s novels)

초록

본고는 그간 페미니즘의 자장에서 읽혀온 공지영의 세 작품 <사랑하는 당신께>(1993), <무소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라>(1998), <착한 여자>(2002)를 중심으로 ‘신경증적 욕구’가 어떠한 사고패턴을 만들어 내고 어떠한 ‘선택’을 하도록 하는지 정신분석학적으로 살펴보았다. 근래의 뉴스를 통해 접하는 다양한 사건, 사고의 여자 주인공들, 신문이나 인터넷의 상담 코너에 올라오는 지나치게 희생적이고 양보하는 여자들, 상대의 부탁을 거절하지 못해 자기 마음이 원하는 것과 반대의 것을 선택하고 마는 이야기들이 공지영 소설에 반복적으로 등장하는 여자 주인공들의 모습과 비슷하다는 점에서 주로 페미니즘이라는 틀에서만 평가되어 온 공지영 소설을 신경증적 관점에서 새롭게 읽어볼 필요를 느꼈기 때문이다.
공지영 소설들에는 모두 지고지순한 사랑과 맹목적 헌신을 하는 여주인공이 등장하며 이러한 ‘착한 여자’들이 ‘나쁜 남자’를 만나 고통을 당하는 플롯을 보여준다. 공지영 소설의 이러한 면은 그간 신파와 통속성으로 비판받아왔다. 그러나 상식적으로 납득하기 힘든 이러한 인물설정과 플롯은 ‘신경증적 욕구’라는 관점에서 바라볼 때 비로소 이해될 수 있다.
이 여성 주인공들은 모두 어릴 때의 상처와 수치심으로 이상화된 자아상을 만들어내게 된다. 이상화된 자아상은 이상과는 다른 것으로 자신감을 대체하는 방어기제와 같은 것이다. 이것은 소설에서 ‘착한 여자’, ‘성녀’, ‘순교자’와 같은 것으로 나타난다. 또한 이들은 전도된 가학증으로 착취와 학대를 당해도 이를 학대라고 제대로 인식을 못하고 오히려 스스로를 자책하며 자살이라는 극단적 ‘선택’을 한다. 또한 ‘운명’이라는 수사와 자기경멸의 외현화는 자기 자신과 타인에게서 소외되도록 한다.
공지영 세 소설의 여주인공들은 ‘하나의 선택’만을 고집하면서 ‘특정 서사에 고착되어 파국을 맞는 경우’와 ‘자기서사가 변화면서 새로운 길 내기를 하는 경우’를 보여주면서 자기서사를 변화시키는 동력이 무엇인지 살펴보도록 한다. 그리고 이 소설들의 담론 방식은 독자가 ‘자기서사’와의 ‘거리’를 확보하도록 하여 현재의 자기 서사는 특정한 ‘선택’을 한 결과이고, 그 ‘선택’을 한 이면에 어떤 무의식적 동기가 작용하는지를 통찰하도록 하고 있다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on Gong Ji-young's three works, Dear My Love(1993), Going Alone like a Horn of Silence(1998), and Good Woman(2002) to psychoanalytically examine the thought patterns that the protagonists' 'neurotic desire' made and their 'choices'. These are stories involving the latest various events that we encounter through news. The victims of those accidents and the over-sacrificial and concessive women who appear in the consultation corner of newspapers or the Internet are similar to the female characters that repeatedly appear in Gong Ji-young’s novels. So this paper argues that it is necessary to read these novels from the perspective of neuroscience, which hitherto have been evaluated only in the context of feminism.
Gong Ji-young’s novels portray heroines who make sublime love and show blind devotion, and plots that 'good girls' meet 'bad men'. This aspect of her novels has been criticized for its trivialism and melodramatic mode. But those characters and plots are difficult to understand and can only be understood when viewed from the perspective of 'neurotic desire'. These heroines create an illusory and idealized self-image out of childhood trauma and shame. The illusory self-image, which is different from 'the ideal', is like a defense mechanism that replaces self-confidence. This is shown as a 'good girl', 'saint', and 'martyr' in the novel. In addition, they do not realize that they are manipulated and abused because of inverted sadism, but rather reproach themselves, making the extreme ‘choice’ of suicide. Also, the rhetoric of ‘destiny’ and the externalization of self-contempt isolate themselves from the real self and others.
The heroines of Gong Ji-young’s three novels demonstrate opposing narratives. When they choose their own changing narratives, they can make the road for their changes, which get them to realize they have the power to change. On the contrary, as they choose to “stick to a particular narrative, even when there are possibilities for change, they come to destroy themselves.” Therefore this paper investigates the motives behind their actions. The discourse of these novels has resulted in readers securing “a distance” from the dominant narrative in these novels. This paper explores the idea that the self-narrative of the female protagonist is the result of a specific “choice,” and offers insight into the unconscious motives.
